Inhibition functions can be improved in children with autism spectrum disorders: An eye-tracking study.

Cognitive remediation therapy interventions could improve cognitive functioning in subjects with autism. To investigate the benefit of a short cognitive training rehabilitation in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) on pursuit and fixation performances. We recruited two groups (G1 and G2) of 30 children with ASD, sex-, IQ- and age-matched (mean 11.6 ± 0.5 years), and pursuit and fixation eye movements were recorded twice at T1 and T2. Between T1 and T2, a 10-min cognitive training was performed by the G1 group only, whereas the G2 group had a 10-min of rest. For all children with ASD

Beyond Thiamine: Treatment for Cognitive Impairment in Korsakoff's Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Wernicke's encephalopathy is a condition whose treatment many consultation-liaison psychiatrists know quite well. Less clear, however, is the treatment of its dementia disorder descendent, the Korsakoff's syndrome (KS). OBJECTIVE: This article seeks to review treatment options and provide recommendations for consultation-liaison psychiatrists treating cognitive impairment in KS. METHODS: In this nonsystematic review, we reviewed PubMed, CINAHL Plus, and Google Scholar for published reports and studies regarding treatment of KS. RESULTS: The literature revealed case reports and p

Introduction to Supplement Issue: Sensory loss in Alzheimer's disease and related dementias.

Sensory impairments (e.g., decreased function in hearing, vision, olfaction, and other senses) may be risk factors for or early markers of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementias (ADRD). Sensory impairments are common and have a large impact on wellbeing. Furthermore, they are clinically detectable and, often, treatable, and could be leveraged to identify and prevent AD/ADRD. This Supplement Issue brings together original research articles, reviews, and thought papers regarding the links between sensory impairments and cognitive health. Together, this work highlights the significant opp

Neurocognitive functioning in bipolar disorder: What we know and what we don't.

Introduction: This narrative review of systematic reviews and meta-analyses aims at compiling available evidence in various aspects of neurocognitive functioning in Bipolar Disorder (BD). Methods: We conducted a MEDLINE literature search and identified 38 relevant systematic reviews and metaanalyses. Results: Current evidence suggests that BD is associated with cognitive impairment across multiple domains and during all clinical states. However, there is a considerable cognitive heterogeneity within BD, which cannot be explained by clinical subtypes, and the pattern of neurocognitive impairmen

Cognitive flexibility, central coherence, and quality of life in anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Anorexia nervosa (AN) has consistently been found to be associated with poor cognitive flexibility and central coherence. These two cognitive functions have been considered important maintenance factors in AN and are addressed by specific treatment approaches such as cognitive remediation therapy. While there is clear empirical evidence that difficulties in such cognitive functions are related to impaired daily functioning in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, this potential association has received only little attention in AN research so far. Therefore, the aim of this study was

Complementary and alternative medicine on cognitive defects and neuroinflammation after sepsis.

Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) is a common manifestation of sepsis, ranging from mild confusion and delirium to severe cognitive impairment and deep coma. SAE is associated with higher mortality and long-term outcomes, particularly substantial declines in cognitive function. The mechanisms of SAE probably include neuroinflammation that is mediated by systemic inflammation and ischemic lesions in the brain, a disrupted blood-brain barrier, oxidative stress, neurotransmitter dysfunction, and severe microglial activation. Increasing evidence suggests that complementary and alternative med

Chemotherapy-related cognitive impairment as a crisis of the self: a Winnicottian psycho-oncological perspective.

OBJECTIVE: Chemotherapy-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) is typically conceptualized as a neurocognitive side effect of cancer treatment, with emotional distress framed as a secondary or reactive consequence. This paper aimed to reconceptualize CRCI from a psycho-oncological perspective by examining how acquired cognitive unreliability disrupts self-experience, identity, and continuity of being, using Donald W. Winnicott's theory of the self and environment. METHODS: This theoretical paper synthesized Winnicottian concepts-including the True Self, False Self, holding, and play-to develop a

Longitudinal cognitive trajectories and associated clinical variables in youth with bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVE: There is substantial interest in delineating the course of cognitive functioning in bipolar (BP) youth. However, there are no longitudinal studies aimed at defining subgroups of BP youth based on their distinctive cognitive trajectories and their associated clinical variables. METHOD: Cognitive functioning was measured in 135 participants from the Course and Outcome of BP Youth (COBY) study using several subtests of the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB). Youth were prospectively evaluated three times on average every 13.75 months over 2.5 years. Clinical

Effectiveness of pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions for treatment-resistant depression in older patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Depression in older adults is often undertreated. A 2011 systematic review of treatments for treatment-resistant depression (TRD) in older adults identified one placebo-controlled randomised controlled trial (RCT). We aimed to update this review, synthesising evidence for the effectiveness of treatments for TRD in older people. METHODS: We systematically searched electronic databases (PubMed, Cochrane, Web of Science) from 9 January 2011 through 10 December 2023 (updating our search on 7 January 2024 for RCTs investigating TRD therapies in adults aged ≥55 years, defining treatment

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) for cognitive impairment in schizophrenia: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive deficits represent a core symptom domain in schizophrenia, with limited responsiveness to pharmacological interventions. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has emerged as a promising non-invasive neuromodulatory technique targeting cognitive enhancement. This systematic review and meta-analysis synthesized randomized controlled trials (RCTs) assessing the efficacy of tDCS on cognitive outcomes in schizophrenia. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search identified 33 RCTs (n = 1372) evaluating cognitive effects of tDCS in patients with schizophrenia or schizo

Intervention-specific patterns of cortical function plasticity during auditory encoding in people with schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is a neurocognitive illness characterized by behavioral and neural impairments in both early auditory processing and higher order verbal working memory. Previously we have shown intervention-specific cognitive performance improvements with computerized, targeted training of auditory processing (AT) when compared to a computer games (CG) control intervention that emphasized visual processing. To investigate spatiotemporal changes in patterns of neural activity specific to the AT intervention, the current study used magnetoencephalography (MEG) imaging to derive induced high gamma

RESEARCH: Cognitive rehabilitation for bipolar disorder: An open trial for employed patients with residual depressive symptoms.

Bipolar disorder is characterized by recurrent episodes of depression and/or mania along with interepisodic mood symptoms that interfere with psychosocial functioning. Despite periods of symptomatic recovery, individuals with bipolar disorder often continue to experience impairments in psychosocial functioning, particularly occupational functioning. Two determinants of psychosocial functioning of euthymic (neither fully depressed nor manic) individuals with bipolar disorder are residual depressive symptoms and cognitive impairment (i.e., difficulties with executive functioning, attention, and
