BACKGROUND There have been few reports of colonic ischemia in patients receiving venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV-ECMO) treatment, and all patients died during the same hospitalization. CASE REPORT A 48-year-old man was admitted with acute respiratory failure secondary to multifocal pneumonia and required VV-ECMO treatment. He developed abdominal distention and colon dilatation and was subsequently found to have ischemic colitis. He was able to recover from critical illness and ischemic colitis with supportive treatment including colonic decompression. CONCLUSIONS Ischemic co

BACKGROUND: Ischemic colitis (IC) is a well-described complication of ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms (rAAAs). The purpose of this study was to compare the incidence of IC in patients with rAAA undergoing open repair (OR) versus endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) at a single institution. In addition, we analyzed the incidence of IC before and after the implementation of a formal rupture AAA protocol (rEVAR protocol).
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data on all patients presenting with rAAA to our institution between January 2002 and October 2013 was performed

CASE REPORT: A 59-year-old male patient was admitted to hospital for general malaise with muscle and bone pain. Some weeks ago he had been treated with roxithromycin because of pneumonia. Physical examination revealed melena. Hemoglobin was 7.6 g/l. Endoscopy of the upper gastrointestinal tract did not show a bleeding source. Colonoscopy and histologic examination revealed hemorrhage caused by ischemic colitis. To rule out cardiac embolies in the presence of paroxysmal tachyarrhythmia absoluta a transesophageal echocardiogram was performed. A mediastinal mass infiltrating the upper left pulmon

Acute colonic ischemia is the most common form of intestinal ischemia. Nonocclusive ischemic colitis contributes to some of these disorders. Heart disease, such as congestive heart failure, myocardial infarction, arrhythmias, aortic valve disease, and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, account for many of its risk factors. The majority of cases are associated with severe congestive heart failure with low cardiac output, or disease states resulting in dehydration, or the splanchnic vasoconstrictive effect of some medications. Reactive splanchnic vasoconstriction is responsible for nonocclu

We describe a patient with progressive systemic sclerosis who developed ischemic colitis and scleroderma renal crisis following steroid pulse therapy. The possible pathogenic mechanisms of ischemic colitis and scleroderma renal crisis development are discussed. We conclude that the administration of steroids in high doses, especially via steroid pulse therapy, should be undertaken with caution for progressive systemic sclerosis patients.

Ischemic colitis is a multifactorial condition typically seen in older adults with risk factors for vascular disease and hypoperfusion, but it can also occur in healthier individuals due to medication-induced mucosal injury. We discuss a case of a 55-year-old male who developed right-sided ischemic colitis following two weeks of high-dose nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) use, combined with systemic corticosteroids for back pain. He presented with severe abdominal pain and bright red rectal bleeding, with labs suggestive of inflammation, initially raising the concern for gastritis an

A 48-year-old Japanese male was admitted to our hospital due to hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state (HHS), combined with rhabdomyolysis and acute kidney injury. His blood sugar levels were gradually decreased by fluid resuscitation and insulin infusion; however, his renal function worsened, and he developed bloody stools. He required continuous hemodiafiltration to improve his hemodynamics. As colonoscopy revealed longitudinal ulcers, ischemic colitis was diagnosed. We treated him conservatively at first, but when we found the ulceration of the sigmoid colon had penetrated the mesenterium, colect

Arteriovenous fistula (AVF) involving the inferior mesenteric vessels is rare, and the affected patients usually present with abdominal pain, mass, or features of established portal hypertension. Colonic ischemia is a less common and more serious manifestation of AVF. We report a case of ischemic colitis secondary to inferior mesenteric AVF in a patient who underwent a previous liver transplantation, subsequently developed portal vein stenosis, and then presented with acute lower gastrointestinal bleeding. He underwent percutaneous transhepatic placement of a portal vein stent and left colecto

INTRODUCTION: Ischemic colitis (IC) accounts for more of the half of total diagnosis of gastrointestinal ischemia. It is a challenging condition due to non-specificity of the symptoms at onset, inconstant behaviour and a wide range of clinical gravity with a different therapeutic approach. A classification of IC into gangrenous, stricturing and transient forms can be considered.
CASE REPORT: In the presented case, due to hypovolemic hemorrhagic shock, the patient developed a progressive IC without gangrene but slowly evolving in multiple colonic strictures with general serious clinical condit

We studied the clinical symptoms and functional-morphological changes of the colon in 42 patients with cardiovascular disease, impaired blood flow in the unpaired visceral branches of the abdominal aorta, clinical and instrumental signs of ischemic colon lesions (ICL). Clinical symptoms characteristic of intestinal pathology were observed in all patients, but traditionally described laboratory-instrumental signs of ischemic colitis are installed in only two of them. At the same time, the histological study of the mucosa of the sigmoid colon in 21 of 23 patients revealed necrosis of surface epi

Ischemic colitis results from insufficient blood supply to the large intestine and is often associated with hypercoagulable states. The condition comprises a wide range presenting with mild to fulminant forms. Diagnosis remains difficult because these patients may present with non-specific abdominal symptoms. We report a 51- year-old female patient with known Leiden factor V mutation as well as systemic lupus erythematous along with antiphospholipid syndrome suffering from recurrent ischemic colitis. At admission, the patient complained about abdominal pain, diarrhea and rectal bleeding lastin

BACKGROUND: Ischemic colitis arises from a reduction in mesenteric blood flow, a condition often aggravated by factors such as severe dieting observed in individuals with anorexia nervosa which compromise the gastrointestinal vasculature, increasing the susceptibility to ischemic injury. Objective: This study aims to rigorously compare three-month clinical outcomes, including colectomy rates, mortality, and other complications, between anorexic and non-anorexic patients diagnosed with ischemic colitis.
METHODS: A validated multicenter database of more than 70 different healthcare systems acro

INTRODUCTION: Multiple myeloma is the second most common hematological neoplasm that also affects young patients. The progression-free survival after autologous stem cell transplant has improved with the introduction of several novel agents such as lenalidomide, which may, however, increase the risk of adverse events.
METHODS: We describe the case of a 54-year-old woman with relapse of multiple myeloma 3 years after myeloablative allogeneic stem cell transplant who developed abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea following 7 months of lenalidomide therapy.

OBJECTIVE: Postoperative ischemic colitis (IC) can be a serious complication following infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair. We sought to identify risk factors and outcomes in patients developing IC after open AAA repair and endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR).
METHODS: The American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database was used to examine clinical data of patients undergoing AAA repair from 2011 to 2012 who developed postoperative IC. Multivariate regression analysis was performed to identify risk factors and outcomes.
RESULTS: We evaluated

INTRODUCTION: COVID-19 infection can cause bowel ischemia, with an incidence ranging from 0.22% to 10.5. The COVID-19 vaccine reduces respiratory symptoms and the need for cardiopulmonary support. However, its effects on other manifestations, such as bowel ischemia, have not been extensively studied. Despite having mild respiratory symptoms and receiving three doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, our patient developed ischemic colitis after her first infection and small bowel ischemia following her second infection.

BACKGROUND: Non-occlusive ischemic colitis appears to be a collection of diseases rather than a single entity. The presumed etiologies are numerous; however, it typically develops spontaneously in the absence of major vasculature occlusion. It includes a wide clinical spectrum ranging from mild to severe forms. Some patients may develop complications and management of this disorder depends on disease severity.
OBJECTIVE: Report of two cases and review of the literature.
CLINICAL CASE: Two cases are described, both requiring surgery with primary anastomosis. One patient had colonic gangrene t

OBJECTIVES: Previous reports on the anatomic portions of colon involved in cases of supposed ischemic colitis (IC) have been limited by the absence of confirmation of the true nature of the disease. This is the first anatomic study to define the patterns of colon involvement in which only cases with biopsy-proven or -compatible IC and in which the entire colon had been visualized at surgery or at colonoscopy were included. The aims of this study were to re-examine patterns of colonic involvement in IC using only cases in which the diagnosis was biopsy proven or compatible, and to examine the c

Intestinal ischemia is reported to be the most common gastrointestinal complication of renal transplantation and a potential cause of morbidity and mortality. The recent use of more potent immunosuppressive drug regimens has reduced the incidence of acute rejection, increasing the incidence of potentially fatal infectious complications, such as clinically important cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection. A 42-year-old kidney transplant recipient experienced on postoperative day 10 a dehiscence of the ureterovesical anastomosis, associated with a 7-cm longitudinal tear graft on the lower pole of the k

Ischemic colitis is the most common form of intestinal ischemia, typically caused by a temporary reduction in blood flow to the colon. It is often linked to atherosclerosis, low blood pressure, or embolism. We present a case of ischemic colitis with atypical location due to an inferior mesenteric arteriovenous malformation (inferior mesenteric artery-vein) in a 77-year-old woman with Child-Turcotte-Pugh Class A hepatitis C cirrhosis. She had a 2-day history of rectal bleeding, mild abdominal pain, and nausea. Colonoscopy findings show segmental erythematous and edematous mucosa with multiple d

BACKGROUND: Ischemic colitis (IC) is a known significant complication after repair of a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm (rAAA). Lower endoscopy (colonoscopy or flexible sigmoidoscopy) is a helpful adjunct to aid decision making for surgical exploration. We believe routine use of lower endoscopy after rAAA repair provides better patient care through expeditious diagnosis and surgical care.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review of rAAA repairs from 2008 to 2019. All patients undergo screening lower endoscopy after rAAA repair at our institution. The incidence of IC, mortality, a
