Several tests are available for assessing colour vision but they can be expensive, complicated or too time consuming to perform. We have produced a new plate test based on pseudoisochromatic principles. The test, using an error score, examines both the red-green and blue-yellow axes, with four levels of difficulty for each axis. We evaluated colour vision in 35 dry-cleaners exposed to perchloroethylene (PCE) and in a paired number of controls matched for sex, age, alcohol consumption and cigarette smoking. A subclinical colour vision loss, mainly in the blue-yellow range, was present in dry-cleaners. This effect was related to PCE exposure levels, and appeared at environmental concentrations of the solvent well below the current exposure limits for exposed workers. The results suggest that PCE exposure, even at low environmental levels, can induce a dose-related impairment of colour vision.

Dominant optic atrophy (DOA) is the most common form of inherited primary optic neuropathy. The purpose of the current study was to report a novel OPA1 splice site mutation and investigate the impact of the mutation on pre-mRNA splicing in a female proband and her father diagnosed with DOA. We evaluated visual acuity, retinal fundi and kinetic visual fields. Color vision phenotypes were determined using the Farnsworth Panel D-15 and the Farnsworth-Munsell 100-hue tests. All 28 coding exons of the OPA1 gene were analyzed with polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification and direct sequencing.

Clinical diagnosis of optic neuropathies is based on the association of visual loss, altered color vision, relative afferent pupillary defect (if the optic neuropathy is unilateral), and changes in optic nerve appearance. Clinical characteristics often allow an etiologic diagnosis. This article emphasizes the two most common causes of optic neuropathies: inflammatory optic neuritis in younger people and anterior ischemic optic neuropathy in older people.

A color television display was used to measure thresholds for mixtures of red and green on a white background; red and green components could be either incremental, decremental or zero. A heterogenous group of diseases, progressive cone dystrophy usually begins in the mid-teenage years or later in life. The estimated prevalence is 1 in 30,000-40,000 individuals. We calculated the impact of higher-order aberrations on retinal image quality and the magnitude of the visual benefit expected from their correction in a large population of human eyes. An ocular survey was done on 6,153 children in 30 community schools in the Madang Province of Papua New Guinea over a two year period. With the New Color Test (NCT) the neutral zone was studied in hereditary and acquired dyschromatopsias. Acquired type III blue-yellow defects with neutral zone occurred in heredo-atrophies of the optic nerve, in edematous maculopathies, in choroidal atrophy, in myopia, in glaucoma and in retinitis pigmentosa. With exclusion of the autosomal dominant inherited cases, the type III neutral zone in retinitis pigmentosa becomes complicated by a type I neutral zone when the visual acuity dropped to 0.2.
