Single-rooted extraction socket classification: A systematic review and proposal of a new classification system based on morphologic and patient-related factors.

Taxonomy and classification of a disease contributes to facilitating the diagnosis and treatment planning process and simplifies communication between clinicians. The aim of this study was to provide a critical appraisal based on a systematic review of the single-rooted extraction socket (ES) classifications and subsequently, introduce a new classification system combining the cornerstones of the previously proposed systems and based on the latest consensus in implant dentistry. Following the systematic search process in PubMed, EMBASE, and SCOPUS databases 13 ES classifications were detected.

The long-term risks and complications of bovine-derived xenografts: A case series.

The frequency of dental implant related surgeries that involve soft tissue and bone augmentation procedures has increased significantly. Bovine-derived substitutes have been by far the most commonly used xenografts in dentistry. Albeit literature is replete with clinical studies in favor of bovine-derived graft materials, bibliographical data reporting on risks and clinical complications is scarce. Clinical impression and concern for patient safety led to the report we have provided. The aim of the present case series was to raise awareness on the long-term risks and late clinical complication

Prevalence of Pediatric Preventive Dental Visits Among Children in Saudi Arabia: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Early preventive dental visits are critical to reducing oral diseases in children and establishing lifelong oral hygiene behaviors. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends that a child's first dental visit occur by age one. However, in Saudi Arabia, limited evidence exists on parental awareness, attitudes, and barriers toward this recommendation. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the timing of the first dental visit among Saudi children and to identify parental knowledge, barriers, and sociodemographic factors associated with compliance with AAPD guidel

A Review of Early Childhood Caries: Risk Factors, Management, and Policy Recommendations.

Initially, the American Academy of Pedodontics and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) jointly addressed severe tooth decay related to bottle use by issuing a statement on Nursing Bottle Caries. However, over the next two decades, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) expanded its understanding, recognising that early childhood caries (ECC) resulted from various inadequate feeding practices, leading to the adoption of the broader term "ECC" to better reflect its complex causes. This review discusses ECC: its prevalence, risk factors, effects, prevention, early detection, and

Platelet-rich fibrin is a blood concentrate system used for soft tissue and bone tissue regeneration. In the last decade, platelet rich fibrin (PRF) has been widely used in different indication fields, particularly in oral and maxillofacial surgery. This review investigates the level of scientific evidence of published articles related to the use of PRF for bone and soft tissue regeneration in dentistry and maxillofacial surgery. An electronic literature research using the biomedical search engine "National Library of Medicine" (PubMed-MEDLINE) was performed in May 2017. A total of 392 article

Needs for oral care among people with intellectual disability not in contact with Community Dental Services.

Previous research has found an unmet need for oral care among people with intellectual disability. The key factors which have been indicated are low expectations, fear of treatment, lack of awareness among carers and problems in accessing dental services. The withdrawal of many general dental practitioners (GDPs) from the National Health Service (NHS) may have exacerbated the latter problem in the UK. The aims of the present study were: (1) to assess the extent of unmet clinical needs in a group of adults with intellectual disability living in the community who were not in contact with the Com

Sociodental approach to the identification of dental treatment-need groups.

The aim of this study was to propose a method that could be used to distinguish significantly different dental treatment-need groups, to assist in planning more appropriate preventive dental health programmes than are now generally available. This involved the use of alternative new measures of dental status in conjunction with an indicator of people's potential, or "propensity" to adopt appropriate dental self-care measures. One important finding, based on a detailed questionnaire and dental examination of a sample population, is that substantial groups have relatively low or medium levels of

Biomedicine in orthodontics: from tooth movement to facial growth.

Biomedicine has the potential to improve orthodontic and dentofacial orthopedic treatment significantly. The importance of biomedicine has grown as the result of three trends that have experienced rapid development in recent years: the increased molecularization of biology; the rise of computer modeling; and the greater application of experimentation to clinical settings. Despite this, the translation of new biologic knowledge to clinical practice in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics has been slow. Notably promising areas of orthodontic biomedical research can be recognized in diagnosis

Development and Evaluation of a Shared Decision-Making Patient Decision Aid for Dental Clinic Care: A Mixed-Methods Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Shared decision-making (SDM) is increasingly recognized as a core element of patient-centered dental care, promoting collaboration between clinicians and patients to ensure that treatment decisions reflect both clinical evidence and individual preferences. However, few patient decision aids (PDAs) tailored to dental contexts have been systematically developed or evaluated. This study aimed to develop a dental-specific PDA and explore patients' perceptions of SDM following PDA-assisted consultations. METHODS: A mixed-methods design was employed in Taiwan, combining a quant

SIOI Policy on Sugar Intake: Limiting Free Sugars from Earliest Days of Life to Prevent Caries, Specific Non-Communicable Diseases, and Tumors.

AIM: The Italian Society of Paediatric Dentistry (SIOI) is committed to encouraging the different health professionals taking care of children (e.g., paediatric dental practitioners, paediatricians, gynecologists, obstetricians, dental hygienists, and dieticians) to educate parents (up to the period of pregnancy) and caregivers to limit their children's consumption of cariogenic sugars. The purpose of this SIOI policy is to provide quality communication and information, based on the most updated scientific evidence, on the amount of free sugars (those classified as cariogenic) that can be cons

Determinants of self-assessed gingival health among adolescents.

The purpose of the present cross-sectional study was to assess the extent of agreement between clinical and self-assessed gingival health and to investigate possible factors associated with the amount of self-assessed gingival bleeding. A study group comprising students enrolled in grade 7 or 8 in Helsinki, Finland (n = 172), performed a self-assessment based on two tests: the amount of bleeding after toothbrushing and after interproximal tooth cleaning with toothpicks. Clinical examinations based on bleeding on probing (BOP%) were carried out by four local community dentists. The highest obse
