Supporting community overdose response planning in Ontario, Canada: Findings from a situational assessment.

BACKGROUND: Many communities across North America are coming together to develop comprehensive plans to address and respond to the escalating overdose crisis, largely driven by an increasingly toxic unregulated drug supply. As there is a need to build capacity for successful implementation, the objective of our mixed methods study was to identify the current planning and implementation practices, needs, and priority areas of support for community overdose response plans in Ontario, Canada. METHODS: We used a situational assessment methodology to collect data on current planning and implementa

Decoding the Role of Companions in Supporting the Health Communication of Older African-American Men With Cancer.

The objective of this study was to systematically characterize the content and patterning of companion's communicative behavior during oncology consultations for older African-American male patients. Companions and family members often play an important role in patient-centered communication for patients with cancer. Despite their disproportionate cancer burden, little is known about how companions facilitate patient-provider communication for older African-American men with cancer. This study represents a secondary qualitative analysis of 14 video-recorded doctor patient-companion medical vis

Determinants of Community Integration Among Formerly Homeless Veterans Who Received Supportive Housing.

Community integration is recognized as a meaningful goal that is highly relevant to the long-term success of supportive housing programs. Research to date highlights concerns that some individuals in permanent supportive housing remain socially isolated and have limited success in other domains of community integration. However, we know little about what factors impact formerly homeless veterans' ability to achieve community integration. To identify factors associated with community integration among homeless veterans housed through the Department of Veterans Affairs' (VA's) Supportive Housing

Shared Illness and Social Support Within Two HIV-Affected African American Communities.

A key source of resiliency within HIV-affected African American communities is informal social support. Data from dyadic conversations and focus groups were used to address the following research question: What are HIV-positive African Americans' social support experiences within their informal social networks in response to HIV-related problems? Circumstances that exacerbated HIV-related problems included others' fear of contagion, reticence to be involved, judgment and rejection, and disregard for privacy Support from HIV-negative others buffered the impact of problems when others communicat

Existence of irritable bowel syndrome supported by factor analysis of symptoms in two community samples.

To determine whether bowel symptoms covary in a pattern consistent with the existence of irritable bowel as a distinct syndrome, bowel symptom questionnaires from 2 independent samples were factor analyzed. Samples consisted of 351 18-40-yr-old women who visited Planned Parenthood clinics for contraception and 149 18-89-yr-old women recruited through church women's societies. Factor analysis of 23 bowel symptoms identified 4 factors (clusters of symptoms that were correlated with each other) in both samples. The factor accounting for the most variance in both samples included relief of pain wi

The Patient Communication Support Guide (PCSG): development and pilot field testing of a digital clinical guide for patient communication in the intensive care unit.

RATIONALE: The value of effective clinician-patient communication for patient safety and comfort is well-established, yet most intensive care unit (ICU) clinicians have little training and few resources to guide them in communication assessment and application of patient-centered communication strategies. The Study of Patient-Nurse Effectiveness with Assisted Communication Strategies algorithm is an evidence-based method to guide clinicians through assessment and communication strategies selection tailored to patient function. OBJECTIVE: To describe the process of design, usability, and accep

Empowering Communities During the COVID-19 Pandemic Through Mothers' Support Groups: Evidence From a Community Engagement Initiative in Sri Lanka.

Community empowerment has previously been used to mitigate the effects of health emergencies, such as outbreaks of Ebola virus disease and Zika virus. In Sri Lanka, mothers' support groups (MSGs) aim to promote community health, well-being, and nutrition practices through community engagement. With the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, MSGs were mobilized by the Health Promotion Bureau in response to the pandemic. Key activities MSGs engaged in during the COVID-19 response included establishing communication networks, creating a supportive environment for preventive behaviors, organizing vac

Towards a Scope of Practice for Peer Support Workers in Addictions: A Community-Based Study Using Qualitative Description.

The aim of this study was to identify how Peer Support Workers (PSWs) understand their scope of practice, to provide greater clarity for PSWs working in addiction care with interprofessional teams. We conducted semi-structured interviews with PSWs and analysed the results using qualitative description. We interviewed 17 PSWs from a variety of backgrounds. We identified five descriptive themes that illustrate how PSWs delineated their scope of practice: building relationships with clients, therapeutic engagement with clients, system navigation, providing supplies to clients, and professional de

Sources of Social Support and Trauma Recovery: Evidence for Bidirectional Associations from a Recently Trauma-Exposed Community Sample.

Although the association between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and social support is well documented, few studies have tested the causal pathways explaining this association at several points in the acute post-trauma recovery period or examined whether the association varies for different sources of social support. To address these gaps, 151 community individuals (mean age = 37.20 years, 69.5% women) exposed to trauma within the previous 6 months were recruited to complete measures of PTSD and social support from intimate partners, friends, and relatives four times in 1 year. Transitional community adherence support for people leaving incarceration in South Africa: a pragmatic, open-label, randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: People released from correctional facilities face multifactorial barriers to continuing HIV treatment. We hypothesised that barriers faced in the first 6 months of community re-entry would be decreased by a multilevel group-based and peer-led intervention, the Transitional Community Adherence Club (TCAC). METHODS: We did a pragmatic, open-label, individually randomised controlled trial in five correctional facilities in Gauteng, South Africa. Participants aged 18 years and older and receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) in correctional facilities were enrolled before release and
