Artificial Intelligence for Quantifying Cumulative Small Bowel Disease Severity on CT-Enterography in Crohn's Disease.

INTRODUCTION: Assessing the cumulative degree of bowel injury in ileal Crohn's disease (CD) is difficult. We aimed to develop machine learning (ML) methodologies for automated estimation of cumulative ileal injury on computed tomography-enterography (CTE) to help predict future bowel surgery. METHODS: Adults with ileal CD using biologic therapy at a tertiary care center underwent ML analysis of CTE scans. Two fellowship-trained radiologists graded bowel injury severity at granular spatial increments along the ileum (1 cm), called mini-segments. ML segmentation methods were trained on radiolog

Facial surface tracing approach to reduce the observation errors in 3D curvilinear landmark annotations on cone-beam computed tomography images.

OBJECTIVES: To propose and validate a 3D facial surface tracing (3D-FAST) algorithm as a robust tracing method to reduce observation errors in identifying maxillofacial curvilinear landmarks. METHODS: The 3D-FAST algorithm comprises four sequential steps: (1) extraction of bone structures from cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) volumes utilizing Otsu's thresholding method; (2) conversion of segmented volumetric data into a mesh representation through the marching-cubes algorithm; (3) initial landmark identification employing a data-driven approach, followed by selective manual refinement; a

Exploring convolutional neural networks with transfer learning for diagnosing Lyme disease from skin lesion images.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Lyme disease which is one of the most common infectious vector-borne diseases manifests itself in most cases with erythema migrans (EM) skin lesions. Recent studies show that convolutional neural networks (CNNs) perform well to identify skin lesions from images. Lightweight CNN based pre-scanner applications for resource-constrained mobile devices can help users with early diagnosis of Lyme disease and prevent the transition to a severe late form thanks to appropriate antibiotic therapy. Also, resource-intensive CNN based robust computer applications can assist non-ex

Crowdsourcing enables robust cell annotation for breast cancer pathology.

The tumor microenvironment (TME) contains important morphological and molecular cues that help determine prognosis and therapeutic responses. Deep learning models can assist pathologists in assessing such biomarkers. However, generating high-quality annotations for computational pathology remains a significant bottleneck due to the level of expertise and considerable time required for fine-grained labeling. In this study, we evaluate the feasibility of using non-expert crowdsourcing for cell annotation in hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) samples of breast cancer tissue. Unlike prior work, performan

Creation of a High-Fidelity, Low-Cost, Intraosseous Line Placement Task Trainer via 3D Printing.

The description of procedural task trainers includes their use as a training tool to hone technical skills through repetition and rehearsal of procedures in a safe environment before ultimately performing the procedure on a patient. Many procedural task trainers available to date suffer from several drawbacks, including unrealistic anatomy and the tendency to develop user-created 'landmarks' after the trainer tissue undergoes repeated manipulations, potentially leading to inappropriate psychomotor skill development. To ameliorate these drawbacks, a process was created to produce a high-fidelit

BACKGROUND: A detailed and accurate understanding of the intrinsic brainstem anatomy and the interrelationship between its internal tracts and nuclei and external landmarks is of paramount importance for safe and effective brainstem surgery. Using anatomical models can be an important step in increasing such understanding. In the present study, we have shown the applicability of our developed virtual 3-dimensional (3D) model in depicting the safe entry zones (SEZs) to the brainstem. METHODS: Accurate 3D virtual models of brainstem elements were created using high-resolution magnetic resonance

Real-Time "Eye-Writing" Recognition Using Electrooculogram.

Eye movements can be used as alternative inputs for human-computer interface (HCI) systems such as virtual or augmented reality systems as well as new communication ways for patients with locked-in syndrome. In this study, we developed a real-time electrooculogram (EOG)-based eye-writing recognition system, with which users can write predefined symbolic patterns with their volitional eye movements. For the "eye-writing" recognition, the proposed system first reconstructs the eye-written traces from EOG waveforms in real-time; then, the system recognizes the intended symbolic inputs with a reli

Logical reasoning for human activity recognition based on multisource data from wearable device.

Smart wearable devices detection and recording of people's everyday activities is critical for health monitoring, helping persons with disabilities, and providing care for the elderly. Most of the research that is being conducted uses a machine learning-based methodology; however, these approaches frequently have issues with high computing resource consumption, burdensome training data gathering, and restricted scalability across many contexts. This research suggests a behaviour detection technology based on multi-source sensing and logical reasoning to address these problems. In order to real

Deep learning-based detection of murine congenital heart defects from µCT scans.

Micro-computed tomography (μCT) provides 3D images of congenital heart defects (CHD) in mice. However, diagnosing CHD from μCT scans is time-consuming and requires clinical expertise. Here, we present a deep learning approach to automatically segment and screen normal from malformed hearts. On a cohort of 139 μCT scans of control and mutant mice, our diagnosis model achieves an area-under-the-curve (AUC) of 97%. For further validation, we acquired two additional cohorts after model training. Performance on a similar 'prospective' cohort is excellent (AUC: 100%). Performance on a 'divergent' co

Dual-BERT adversarial learning for Hausa user-generated text normalization.

Text normalization (TN) is a crucial preprocessing task in Natural Language Processing (NLP) that enables the conversion of noisy, informal texts into standardized forms suitable for downstream applications, such as machine translation, speech recognition, text-to-speech systems, sentiment analysis, and information retrieval. User-Generated Content (UGC) from social media and messaging platforms often contains irregularities such as abbreviations, phonetic spellings, code-switching, and orthographic inconsistencies. These irregularities have significant implications, especially for low-resourc

Reliable Object Pose Alignment in Mixed-Reality Environments Using Background-Referenced 3D Reconstruction.

Accurate alignment of real-world object poses with their virtual counterparts using sensors, e.g. cameras, is essential for consistent interaction in mixed-reality systems. However, objects can undergo abrupt, untracked movements during periods when a tracking system is inactive, e.g., overnight, causing stored pose records to become inconsistent with the real scene and breaking user interaction in the virtual environment. Off-the-shelf 3D reconstruction networks such as MASt3R (Matching and Stereo 3D Reconstruction) method provide metrically scaled 3D point maps and pixel correspondences, but

An Investigation of Various Machine and Deep Learning Techniques Applied in Automatic Fear Level Detection and Acrophobia Virtual Therapy.

In this paper, we investigate various machine learning classifiers used in our Virtual Reality (VR) system for treating acrophobia. The system automatically estimates fear level based on multimodal sensory data and a self-reported emotion assessment. There are two modalities of expressing fear ratings: the 2-choice scale, where 0 represents relaxation and 1 stands for fear; and the 4-choice scale, with the following correspondence: 0-relaxation, 1-low fear, 2-medium fear and 3-high fear. A set of features was extracted from the sensory signals using various metrics that quantify brain (electro

DeFecT-FF: a machine learning force field framework for high throughput defect modeling in CdTe-based solar cells.

We developed a framework for predicting the energies and ground state configurations of native point defects, extrinsic dopants and impurities, and defect complexes across zinc blende-phase Cd/Zn-Te/Se/S compounds, important for CdTe-based solar cells. This framework, named DeFecT-FF, is powered by high-throughput density functional theory (DFT) computations and crystal graph-based machine learning force field (MLFF) models trained on the DFT data. The Cd/Zn-Te/Se/S chemical space is chosen because alloying at Cd or Te sites is a promising avenue to tailor the electronic and defect properties

Laser Light Scattering-Enhanced Deep Computer Vision Method for the Detection of Trace Mineral Oil in Vegetable Oils.

Mineral oil contamination in vegetable oils poses a serious threat to food safety and consumer health. In this study, we reported an on-site compatible analytical strategy based on laser light scattering-enhanced deep computer vision for detecting mineral oil contamination in vegetable oils. The strategy integrates saponification-induced phase and turbidity contrast with laser-enhanced scattering visualization to transform trace mineral oil into visually discriminative signals. To accurately analyze these signals, we proposed a novel, lightweight, and efficient deep learning model (Oil-MobileN

Brain-muscle-computer interface: mobile-phone prototype development and testing.

We report prototype development and testing of a new mobile-phone-based brain-muscle-computer interface for severely paralyzed persons, based on previous results from our group showing that humans may actively create specified power levels in two separate frequency bands of a single surface electromyography (sEMG) signal. EMG activity on the surface of a single face muscle site (auricularis superior) is recorded with a standard electrode. This analog electrical signal is imported into an Android-based mobile phone and digitized via an internal A/D converter. The digital signal is split, and th
