Combined computational and experimental investigation of the La2CuO4-x S x (0 ≤ x ≤ 4) quaternary system.

The lack of a mechanistic framework for chemical reactions forming inorganic extended solids presents a challenge to accelerated materials discovery. We demonstrate here a combined computational and experimental methodology to tackle this problem, in which in situ X-ray diffraction measurements monitor solid-state reactions and deduce reaction pathways, while theoretical computations rationalize reaction energetics. The method has been applied to the La2CuO4-x S x (0 ≤ x ≤ 4) quaternary system, following an earlier prediction that enhanced superconductivity could be found in these new lanthanu

Rare-earth vs. heavy metal pigments and their colors from first principles.

Many inorganic pigments contain heavy metals hazardous to health and environment. Much attention has been devoted to the quest for nontoxic alternatives based on rare-earth elements. However, the computation of colors from first principles is a challenge to electronic structure methods, especially for materials with localized f-orbitals. Here, starting from atomic positions only, we compute the colors of the red pigment cerium fluorosulfide as well as mercury sulfide (classic vermilion). Our methodology uses many-body theories to compute the optical absorption combined with an intermediate len

Computer-generated microsurgical anatomy of the basilar artery bifurcation. Technical note.

The authors' goal was to develop a computer graphics model to represent the microsurgical anatomy of the basilar artery (BA) bifurcation and surrounding structures to simulate surgery of a BA bifurcation aneurysm performed via the transsylvian approach. The source of the input data was a variety of publications that showed detailed anatomy of the area. A computer graphics model of the area near the BA bifurcation including relevant structures, such as perforating branches or cranial nerves, was depicted in detail. A BA bifurcation aneurysm was added to the computer graphics model and it was ro

Rectangular tolerance regions and multivariate normal reference regions in laboratory medicine.

Reference intervals are widely used in the interpretation of results of biochemical and physiological tests of patients. When there are multiple biochemical analytes measured from each subject, a multivariate reference region is needed. Because of their greater specificity against false positives, such reference regions are more desirable than separate univariate reference intervals that disregard the cross-correlations between variables. Traditionally, under multivariate normality, reference regions have been constructed as ellipsoidal regions. This approach suffers from a major drawback: it

Electrode Spacing and Current Distribution in Electrical Stimulation of Peripheral Nerve: A Computational Modeling Study using Realistic Nerve Models.

Electrical stimulation of peripheral nerves has long been used and proven effective in restoring function caused by disease or injury. Accurate placement of electrodes is often critical to properly excite the nerve and yield the desired outcome. Computational modeling is becoming an important tool that can guide the rapid development and optimization of such implantable neural stimulation devices. Here, we developed a heterogeneous very high-resolution computational model of a realistic peripheral nerve stimulated by a current source through cuff electrodes. We then calculated the current dist

Accuracy vs. computational time: translating aortic simulations to the clinic.

State of the art simulations of aortic haemodynamics feature full fluid-structure interaction (FSI) and coupled 0D boundary conditions. Such analyses require not only significant computational resource but also weeks to months of run time, which compromises the effectiveness of their translation to a clinical workflow. This article employs three computational fluid methodologies, of varying levels of complexity with coupled 0D boundary conditions, to simulate the haemodynamics within a patient-specific aorta. The most comprehensive model is a full FSI simulation. The simplest is a rigid walled

CNN application for automated determination of the patient's size to obtain the size-specific dose estimated in CT.

Introduction. The currently available dosimetry techniques in computed tomography can be inaccurate which overestimate the absorbed dose. Therefore, we aimed to provide an automated and fast methodology to more accurately calculate the SSDE usingDwobtained by using CNN from thorax and abdominal CT study images.Methods. The SSDE was determined from the 200 records files. For that purpose, patients' size was measured in two ways: (a) by developing an algorithm following the AAPM Report No. 204 methodology; and (b) using a CNN according to AAPM Report No. 220.Results. The patient's size measured

An asymmetric pericyclic cascade approach to 3-alkyl-3-aryloxindoles: generality, applications and mechanistic investigations.

The reaction of L-serine derived N-arylnitrones with alkylarylketenes generates asymmetric 3-alkyl-3-aryloxindoles in good to excellent yields (up to 93%) and excellent enantioselectivity (up to 98% ee) via a pericyclic cascade process. The optimization, scope and applications of this transformation are reported, alongside further synthetic and computational investigations. The preparation of the enantiomer of a Roche anti-cancer agent (RO4999200) 1 (96% ee) in three steps demonstrates the potential utility of this methodology.

The cervical spine: radiologist's perspective.

This article provides an essential curriculum in cervical spine radiology. It discusses the uses of plain radiographs, MR imaging, computed tomography (CT), and CT myelography, in addition to the methodologies of discography, epidural injections under visualization, and facet and nerve root injections. It explains how radiographic images of the cervical spine can differentiate tumors, inflammation, recent or prior trauma, and the range of discal, arthritic, neural, and vascular cervical pathologies and, just as importantly, when they cannot.

Diffusion tensor brain imaging and tractography.

Diffusion-tensor MR imaging is a promising tool to evaluate white-matter integrity by quantitative and graphic maps including neural fiber tractogram. Current challenges afoot are to obtain higher quality diffusion-weighted MR images (high SNR, isotropic voxel, and high spatial resolution), to create a robust mathematical framework to process the data, to construct a user-friendly computer-based algorithm, to reveal determinants of diffusion process, and to establish analytical methodology.

Reproducibility of human landmark identification in morphological mandible prototypes: major parameters for a 3D CBCT approach.

The establishment of anthropometric measurements is of fundamental importance for the correct identification of human bodies. The objective of this study was to evaluate the accuracy and reliability of two-dimensional craniometric landmarks obtained from three-dimensional cone beam computed tomography reconstructions for forensic identification of humans. Computed tomography images with voxel sizes of 0.25, 0.3, and 0.4 mm were obtained using i-CAT® three-dimensional equipment. Ten landmarks were randomly selected, and 10 measurements were demarcated in the three-dimensional reconstruction to

Towards computer assisted evaluation of plagiocephaly.

Plagiocephaly is a common asymmetry of the skull giving the impression that the subject, usually a neonate, has suffered a compressive force acting unilaterally. Normally innocuous, it is a postural deformity that can be suggestive of other significant abnormalities, e.g. joint dysplasia. Although intuitive measurements of plagiocephaly appear in the literature there is little evidence of analytical evaluation. This paper describes a measurement methodology based on black and white photography. A flat-bed scanner and a personal computer facilitated the transformation of the prepared photograph

Novel Treatment Planning of Hemimandibular Hyperplasia by the Use of Three-Dimensional Computer-Aided-Design and Computer-Aided-Manufacturing Technologies.

RATIONALE AND AIM: Hemimandibular hyperplasia is characterized by an obvious overgrowth in the size of the mandible on one side, which can extend up to the midline causing facial asymmetry. Surgical resection of the overgrowth depends heavily on the skill and experience of the surgeon. This report describes a novel methodology of applying three-dimensional computer-aided-design and computer-aided-manufacturing principles in improving the outcome of surgery in 2 mandibular hyperplasia patients. METHODOLOGY: Both patients had their cone beam computer tomography (CBCT) scan performed. CMF Pro Pl

Vibroacoustic response of confined rotating flow: A physically-coupled numerical study.

This work presents a methodology to study the noise generated by confined flows, i.e., flows enclosed within a device, which therefore significantly influence both the flow characteristics and the transmission of noise. A coupling workflow is implemented to link computational fluid dynamics simulations and structural dynamic analysis, where the pressure field computed in the fluid domain provides the forcing terms for the structural vibration equations. Outside the solid structure, the Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings acoustic analogy is applied to compute the noise radiated by the vibrating structure

A computational framework for quantifying blood flow dynamics across myogenically-active cerebral arterial networks.

Cerebral autoregulation plays a key physiological role by limiting blood flow changes in the face of pressure fluctuations. Although the underlying vascular cellular processes are chemo-mechanically driven, estimating the associated haemodynamic forces in vivo remains extremely difficult and uncertain. In this work, we propose a novel computational methodology for evaluating the blood flow dynamics across networks of myogenically-active cerebral arteries, which can modulate their muscular tone to stabilize flow (and perfusion pressure) as well as to limit vascular intramural stress. Cold Forming of Al-TiB2 Composites Fabricated by SPS: A Computational Experimental Study.

The mechanical response and failure of Al-TiB2 composites fabricated by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) were investigated. The effective flow stress at room temperature for different TiB2 particle volume fractions between 0% and 15% was determined using compression experiments on cylindrical specimens in conjunction with an iterative computational methodology. A different set of experiments on tapered specimens was used to validate the effective flow curves by comparing experimental force-displacement curves and deformation patterns to the ones obtained from the computations.
