Beyond initial encoding: measures of the post-encoding status of memory traces predict long-term recall during infancy.

The first years of life are witness to rapid changes in long-term recall ability. In the current research we contributed to an explanation of the changes by testing the absolute and relative contributions to long-term recall of encoding and post-encoding processes. Using elicited imitation, we sampled the status of 16-, 20-, and 24-month-old infants' memory representations at various time points after experience of events. In Experiment 1, infants were tested immediately, 1 week after encoding, and again after 1 month. The measure of 1-week trace status was a unique predictor of 1-month delaye

Trail Making Test in assessing children with reading disabilities: a test of executive functions or content information.

The speed of performance on Part A, Part B, and on an experimental version containing alphabetical series (Part A Alphabetic) of the Trail Making Test was studied with 19 children with reading disabilities and 34 controls from Grades 4 to 6. When the test was used in discriminant profile fashion, children with reading disabilities showed a deficit compared with control children on Part B relative to part A but did not relative to the new Part A Alphabetic. The results indicate that the performance of the children with reading disabilities on Part B is likely to be affected by their slowness on

Splitting as a consequence of severe abuse in childhood.

Clinical data suggest that Kernberg's description of splitting as a defense mechanism is useful in conceptualizing the psychological consequences of abuse in childhood in certain patients. The splitting in these patients is similar to his description of splitting in borderline patients in that it compartmentalizes and sequesters certain overwhelming and painful ego states accompanying negative introjects of the betraying primary object and the betrayed self. These sequestered introjects, furthermore, act as automatons, generating behaviors that arbitrarily re-enact their content even though th

Do children with a specific reading disability have a general serial-ordering deficit?

Two experiments are described in which reading disabled subjects and their normal controls were tested for their ability to abstract sequential regularities from a noisy background. Subjects were presented with an adaptation of the repeated digits task of Hebb (1961) and its spatial analogue the Corsi Blocks (Milner, B. Br. Med. Bull. 27, 272-277, 1971). Normal subjects had a digit span significantly better than their block span and also significantly better than that of the disabled readers. This suggested that normal subjects have better defined "storage filters" for digits or a specific adv

[What are specific performance weaknesses?].

The term "specific developmental disorder" means localized deficits in very different functions contrasting fit in the general otherwise normal performance level of a child. These disorders are mostly looked upon in a developmental context and differentiated from acquired neuropsychological syndromes (e.g. aphasia, apraxia). The most important clinically relevant disorders are: the specific reading disability, the specific dyscalculia, other specific learning disabilities, the specific developmental language disorder, the specific retardation in the motor development, and multiple developmenta

Neuropsychological assessment of learning disabilities: a discriminant analysis.

The neuropsychological test scores of 23 learning disabled children were compared with those of a matched population of normal children in the 9-1 to 13-1 age range. All children were administered the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised (WISC-R), a dichotic listening task involving both free and directed recall conditions, a handedness inventory, the Tactile Performance Test and the Category Test from the Halstead-Reitan Neuropsychological Test Battery. A multivariate analysis of variance resulted in a significant separation between groups (p less than .001) using these procedures

Selective Attention Dynamically Modulates the Hierarchical Order of Perceptual and Conceptual Representations.

Mounting evidence suggests that information processing in the visual hierarchy involves a progression from low-level perceptual to high-level conceptual features during visual perception, and a reverse traversal during memory retrieval. However, the nature of this processing hierarchy and its modulation by selective attention remain unclear. By using the drift-diffusion model, we found that slower reaction times for conceptual versus perceptual tasks were primarily due to differences in decision boundaries and nondecision times, which were not compensated by faster evidence accumulation for co

Prior experience of variability influences generalisation of unspecified categories.

Category variability or diversity is an important factor influencing generalisation. However, expectations of category variability may not only depend on the variability of encountered category members, but may also be shaped by prior experiences with similar categories. In this study, we investigated whether we could influence category generalisation by inducing different category representations in an A/Non-A categorisation task: Participants either learned about a homogeneous category Non-A or a diverse category Non-A during a priming phase. To better understand the transfer process, we var

Decoding the information structure underlying the neural representation of concepts.

The nature of the representational code underlying conceptual knowledge remains a major unsolved problem in cognitive neuroscience. We assessed the extent to which different representational systems contribute to the instantiation of lexical concepts in high-level, heteromodal cortical areas previously associated with semantic cognition. We found that lexical semantic information can be reliably decoded from a wide range of heteromodal cortical areas in the frontal, parietal, and temporal cortex. In most of these areas, we found a striking advantage for experience-based representational struct

Contrasting Semantic versus Inhibitory Processing in the Angular Gyrus: An fMRI Study.

Recent studies of semantic memory have focused on dissociating the neural bases of two foundational components of human thought: taxonomic categories, which group similar objects like dogs and seals based on features, and thematic categories, which group dissimilar objects like dogs and leashes based on events. While there is emerging consensus that taxonomic concepts are represented in the anterior temporal lobe, there is disagreement over whether thematic concepts are represented in the angular gyrus (AG). We previously found AG sensitivity to both kinds of concepts; however, some accounts s

Same words, different structures: An fMRI investigation of argument relations and the angular gyrus.

In fMRI, increased activation for combinatorial syntactic and semantic processing is typically observed in a set of left hemisphere brain areas: the angular gyrus (AG), the anterior temporal lobe (ATL), the posterior superior temporal sulcus (pSTS), and the inferior frontal gyrus (IFG). Recent work has suggested that semantic combination is supported by the ATL and the AG, with a division of labor in which AG is involved in event concepts and ATL is involved in encoding conceptual features of entities and/or more general forms of semantic combination. The current fMRI study was designed to ref

Dissociable roles of left and right temporoparietal junction in strategic competitive interaction.

Although many studies have shown that the temporoparietal junction (TPJ) is involved in inferring others' beliefs, neural correlates of 'second-order' inferences (inferring another's inference about one's own belief) are still elusive. Here we report a functional magnetic resonance imaging experiment to examine the involvement of TPJ for second-order inferences. Participants played an economic game with three types of opponents: a human opponent outside the scanner, an artificial agent that followed a fixed probabilistic strategy according to a game-theoretic solution (FIX) and an artificial a

Affective flexibility and generalized anxiety disorder: valence-specific shifting difficulties.

Background: Growing evidence suggests that generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is associated with poor affective flexibility, defined as the ability to switch between emotional aspects and non-emotional aspects of a situation. However, it is unclear whether affective inflexibility is valence-specific in GAD. Methods: Participants with GAD (n = 21) and non-clinical control participants (n = 28) were tested on an Affective Switching Task during which participants were asked to categorize pictures either by the valence or by the number of humans present in the pictures. Results: Individuals with G

Using concept mapping to inform the development of a transitional reintegration intervention program for formerly incarcerated people with HIV.

BACKGROUND: Accessing HIV-related care is challenging for formerly incarcerated people with HIV. Interventions informed by the perspectives of these individuals could facilitate engagement with care and address competing priorities that may act as barriers to this process. METHODS: We used concept mapping to identify and prioritize the main obstacles to engaging with HIV-related care following prison release. In brainstorming sessions, formerly incarcerated people with HIV generated responses to a focused prompt regarding the main barriers to reengaging with care. These were consolidated in 3

What does remission tell us about women with eating disorders? Investigating applications of various remission definitions and their associations with quality of life.

OBJECTIVE: To compare remission rates, determine level of agreement and identify quality of life (QoL) distinctions across a broad spectrum of remission definitions among patients with eating disorders (ED). METHODS: Women (N=195; 94 AN, 24 BN, and 77 EDNOS) from inpatient and partial hospital ED programs participated in a study of treatment outcomes. Remission rates were evaluated with percentages, kappa coefficients identified level of agreement and Mann-Whitney-Wilcoxon tests with Bonferroni corrections determined differences in quality of life between remitted and not remitted patients by

Pathogenesis of propylthiouracil-related hepatotoxicity in children: present concepts.

Propylthiouracil (PTU), carbimazole (CMZ) and methimazole (MMI) are the most common drugs used today in cases of adolescent thyrotoxicosis. Skepticism has been growing regarding the use of PTU in childhood and its association with severe liver failure. The aim of this review is to present all the recent data regarding pathogenesis of PTU hepatotoxicity in children and adolescents. Specifically, reactive drug metabolites and increased oxidative stress can directly activate inflammatory and immunological pathways. Drugs are not only immunogenic because of their chemical reactivity but also becau

Adding folate to the contraceptive pill: a new concept for the prevention of neural tube defects.

Although it is proven for a long time that folic acid supplementation in the periconceptional period can prevent neural tube defects (NTDs) effectively, all measures taken so far including food fortification and awareness campaigns so far had only limited success. Since more than 50% of the pregnant women in Europe get pregnant after they have used oral contraceptives (OCs) before, OCs are an ideal vehicle to increase not only the awareness for periconceptional folate application, but they can also help to bridge the gap between the recognition of a pregnancy and closure of the neural tube whi

Behavioral patterns and lesion sites associated with impaired processing of lexical and conceptual knowledge of actions.

To further investigate the neural substrates of lexical and conceptual knowledge of actions, we administered a battery of six tasks to 226 brain-damaged patients with widely distributed lesions in the left and right cerebral hemispheres. The tasks probed lexical and conceptual knowledge of actions in a variety of verbal and non-verbal ways, including naming, word-picture matching, attribute judgments involving both words and pictures, and associative comparisons involving both words and pictures. Of the 226 patients who were studied, 61 failed one or more of the six tasks, with four patients b

Children with cerebral palsy, spina bifida and pragmatic language impairment: differences and similarities in pragmatic ability.

Pragmatically related abilities were studied in three clinical groups of children from 5 to 11 years of age; children with cerebral palsy (CP; n=10), children with spina bifida and hydrocephalus (SBH; n=10) and children with pragmatic language impairment (PLI; n=10), in order to explore pragmatic abilities within each group. A range of pragmatic, linguistic and cognitive assessments were performed, and comparisons between the groups were made. In addition, connections between variables were studied. The most salient result was the many similarities and the lack of clear boundaries between the

Imitation of hierarchical structure versus component details of complex actions by 3- and 5-year-olds.

We investigated developmental changes in the level of information children incorporate into their imitation when a model executes complex, hierarchically organized actions. A total of 57 3-year-olds and 60 5-year-olds participated, watching video demonstrations of an "artificial fruit" box being opened through a complex series of nine different steps. Half of each sample observed the same nine steps performed through either of two different, hierarchically organized procedures, whereas half witnessed differing component action details. Children were found to imitate at both levels but were mor
