CONTEXT: Young Latinos in the United States are at high risk for STDs and are less likely than other youth to use condoms. To our knowledge, no studies have examined the relationship between sexual values and condom negotiation strategies among young Latinos.
METHODS: Cross-sectional data collected in 2003-2006 from 571 Latino women and men aged 16-22 in the San Francisco Bay Area were used to examine associations between sexual values (e.g., considering sexual talk disrespectful or female virginity important) and use of strategies to engender or avoid condom use. Linear regression analyses w

This cross-sectional study identified the prevalence and correlates of condom-use errors among female sex workers (FSWs) in Armenia. One hundred and seventeen street-based FSWs aged 20-52 years completed an interviewer-administered questionnaire. Condom-use errors were reported by 78.0% of participants. Number of clients, higher frequency of condom application on clients by FSWs, greater perceived barriers to condom use, elevated depressive symptomatology and having sex while drinking alcohol were significantly associated with higher number of condom-use errors. History of sexually transmitted

AIM: This paper is a report of a study of sexually active young women's experiences of negotiating condom use both before and after diagnosis of a sexually transmitted infection.
BACKGROUND: The male condom is the most efficient method in preventing and reducing the transmission of sexually transmitted infections. However, condom use can be hindered by factors including societal norms and gender roles, which can create difficulties for women in initiating and negotiating condom use in heterosexual partnerships.
METHODOLOGY: A feminist narrative approach was used, and ten women's stories were

BACKGROUND: Uterine tamponade is often used to control post partum hemorrhage. Among various methods, condom Foley's catheter tamponade is simple, easy to use and is believed to be effective. The study evaluates outcome of condom Foley's catheter tamponade.
METHODS: In this prespective observational study, condom tamponade was applied to fourteen cases with varying degrees of PPH, not controlled with pharmacologic measures. The efficacy on control of bleeding was assessed along with the total amount of blood loss and any complications.
RESULTS: The condom tamponade stopped bleeding in all th

This daily experience study examined the roles of attachment orientations and daily relationship satisfaction in shaping daily condom use among college students in dating relationships. Seventy-five participants completed an initial measure of attachment orientation and then reported their relationship satisfaction and condom use each day for 14 consecutive days. The results showed that attachment anxiety was associated with less frequent use of condoms on a daily basis. Daily satisfaction was also associated with a decreased likelihood of using condoms, and this association was stronger for t

BACKGROUND: Correct and consistent use of condoms has been reported as effective in the prevention of transmission of HIV. There have been many studies reporting on attitudes (perceptions) of communities on condoms and other aspects of HIV and AIDS and yet there is paucity of data on the perception towards condoms and abstinence by law makers.
OBJECTIVE: To determine perceptions of Members of Parliament in Malawi towards condoms.
METHODS: A qualitative study utilising parliamentary Hansards to describe the discussions about condoms and abstinence in the National Assembly 1999-2004. Content a

OBJECTIVE: This study examined adolescents' attitudes about and behaviors toward condom use with "casual" vs. "main" sexual partners.
METHOD: Participants were sexually active adolescents aged 15-21 years (n = 1316) recruited from primary care clinics and through outreach activities in three major cities in the United States. Assessment of condom use within the past 90 days, relevant attitudes, substance use, and demographic data were obtained via audio computer-assisted self-interview (ACASI).
RESULTS: Participants were divided into two groups: the 65% who reported main partners only (MP gr

BACKGROUND: Negative attitudes toward using male condoms tend to be associated with higher rates of sexual risk. Little has been written about the factors that influence women's attitudes toward condom use, and this has implications for HIV intervention efforts.
METHODS: Two hundred fifty adult women considered to be at risk based on demographic and family characteristics and residing in the Atlanta, Georgia, metropolitan area were interviewed between August 1997 and August 2000. Street outreach efforts were used to identify potential study participants, with further expansion of the sample d

Standard in vivo biomechanical performance tests and a pilot clinical study of latex external condom catheters (ECCs) and silicone ECCs demonstrated the superior performance of the silicone ECC over that of the latex ECC. The silicone ECC has a self-adhesive that binds more securely to human skin than the self-adhesive of latex ECC. In addition, the moisture vapor transmission through silicone is significantly greater than through latex. The aggressive self-adhesive of the silicone ECC significantly reduced ECC catheter pop-off compared to that of latex ECC. Silicone ECC removal can be facilit

Unprotected sex is a critical issue in the Hispanic community, with the incidence of new Hispanic acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) cases three times that of non-Hispanic Whites. The researchers used focus groups to examine: (a) whether newly immigrated Mexican men and women in the Southeast United States discussed human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/sexually transmitted disease (STD) prevention with each other, and (b) how condom use was discussed. For the women, communication was safe sex, and for the men, trust was safe sex. Both communication and trust were dependent on timing in t

OBJECTIVES: The main purpose of this study is to compare sexually transmitted disease (STD) prevalence in cohorts of women with and without access to female condoms.
METHODS: Six matched pairs of communities were identified from Kenya tea, coffee and flower plantations. One community within each pair was randomly selected to receive the female condom intervention. Approximately 160 eligible women were enrolled at each site. Female condom communities underwent an education program on use of female and male condoms and STDs, comprising group meetings, puppetry and other folk media, and training

A telephone survey was used to collect data on attitudes, beliefs, and practices concerning condom use among 812 African Americans with regular sex partners and of reproductive age in Baltimore. Condom use was "staged" according to Prochaska's model of stage of behavioral change. Characteristics of the respondents' sexual relationships, peer characteristics, and demographic and psychosocial characteristics were examined for their association with the stage of condom use. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that a partner's reaction to condom use, condom use self-efficacy with the pa

This study examines the acceptability of the female condom among African American and Latino patients from two inner-city sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinics through focus group discussions. Prior to the initial focus group sessions, 90% (n = 90) had heard about the female condom, 8% (n = 8) had seen it, and 2% (n = 2) had used it. Among the 41 participants (22 males and 19 females) attending a second focus group session, 85.4% (n = 35) had used the female condom at least once. Female study participants who had previous experience inserting a barrier contraceptive device, such as a diap

The risk of condom slippage (1.94%) and breakage (0.89%) among 3607 condoms was analysed with respect to the use of additional lubricant. Whether or not lubricant was used, the site at which it was applied and the type of lubricant used were all found to vary significantly with the type of sexual act(s) for which the condoms were used. Little evidence was found for differing effects of type of additional lubricant (water-based, saliva or other) or site of lubricant use (on penis/inside condom, on condom, in vagina/anus). The use of lubricant more than doubles the risk of slippage for vaginal s

We evaluated the effects of condom use, lubricated condom use, and spermicide use on risk of acquiring first urinary tract infection in a case-control study of sexually active college women ages 18-39 years. Cases (N = 144) were women with first urinary tract infection that was confirmed by culture recruited at the student health service; controls (N = 286) were women without a history of urinary tract infection who were randomly sampled from all women enrolled at the university. Participants completed a self-administered questionnaire regarding type and frequency of condom use during the prev

OBJECTIVE: To examine information giving by genitourinary medicine (GUM) consultants about the use of condoms for patients with anogenital warts (AGW).
METHOD: 228 GUM consultants in the UK and Ireland were sent a questionnaire concerning the information about condom use which they usually discuss with patients with AGW. The survey was carried out in 1994.
RESULTS: There was a 46% response rate. Most consultants indicated giving information specifically with regard to the prevention of transmission of human papilloma virus (HPV), and not only in the context of safe sex. With regard to curren

A survey of 180 randomly selected drivers was carried out in June 1994 in Ilorin, Nigeria in order to gain information about high-risk sexual behaviours, to ascertain condom use and to identify obstacles to condom acceptance so as to facilitate the design of an intervention to prevent Sexually Transmitted Diseases/Acquired Immuno-deficiency Disease in this target population. Data was collected through face-to-face interview. Three-quarters of the respondents were married. Multiplicity of sexual partners including casual and commercial contacts, was common. Half of the respondents engaged in hi

Data from a survey of 691 men and women who made patient visits to an inner-city, sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinic and were given coupons to redeem for condoms at a neighborhood pharmacy show that only 22% of the sample did so. Gender, ethnicity, marital status and education were not significant predictors of whether study participants redeemed their coupons. Factors that significantly predicted coupon redemption included the extent of acculturation and age, with those who were older and less acculturated more likely to do so. Other significant factors were having a primary sexual par
