Comparison of contrast sensitivity, visual acuity, and Humphrey visual field testing in patients with glaucoma.

PURPOSE: To investigate the relationship between large-letter contrast sensitivity, high-contrast visual acuity, and visual field defects in patients with glaucoma. METHODS: Patients with a diagnosis of glaucoma, glaucoma suspect, or ocular hypertension whose visual acuity was 20/40 (logMAR = 0.3) on better were included in the study. Visual acuity was measured using the Lighthouse visual acuity charts. Contrast sensitivity was measured using the Pell-Robson (PR) chart. The mean depression (MD) score from the most recent Humphrey visual field was used to quantify the visual field defect. RES

Changes in the contrast sensitivity of an amblyopic eye after losing the other normal eye.

A man aged 17 had an amblyopic left eye with central fixation and lost his normal right eye by an accident. After the accident, spontaneous improvement of the visual acuity of the amblyopic left eye was rapid. Just after the accident, overall contrast sensitivity of the left eye was considerably less than that of a normal adult. Improvement of the contrast sensitivity was recorded first at low spatial frequencies and then at high spatial frequencies. However, the contrast sensitivity at medium spatial frequencies remained less than that of a normal adult. These results suggest that lateral inh

Effects of strabismus on responsivity, spatial resolution, and contrast sensitivity of cat lateral geniculate neurons.

Rearing cats with esotropia is known to cause a number of deficits in visual behavior tested through the deviated eye. These include a loss of orienting response to stimuli presented in the nasal visual field of the deviated eye, a reduction in visual acuity, and a general reduction in contrast sensitivity at all spatial frequencies. To assess the involvement of the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) in these deficits, we measured the following: 1) the visual responsiveness of lamina A1 cells with peripheral (more than 10 degrees from area centralis) receptive fields in three esotropic and three

Contrast sensitivity in evaluation of visual impairment due to macular degeneration and optic nerve lesions.

Spatial contrast sensitivity was investigated in a group of 17 patients with macular degeneration or optic atrophy. It has been reported earlier that patients with optic atrophy may have reduced contrast sensitivity at low spatial frequencies without decrease of visual acuity, a phenomenon called 'hidden visual loss'. The present study shows that also the opposite may be true: patients with macular degeneration or optic atrophy may have greatly decreased visual acuity and yet normal or nearly normal contrast sensitivity at low spatial frequencies and reasonably good sensitivity at intermediate

Visual acuity and contrast sensitivity in multiple sclerosis--hidden visual loss: an auxiliary diagnostic test.

In 48 patients with multiple sclerosis sine-wave gratings were used to test visual sensitivity for coarse, medium, and fine detail rather than measuring visual acuity for fine detail only, as in conventional clinical tests. In 20/48 patients the test revealed a visual defect of neural origin, qualitatively different from that caused by refractive error. In 11 of these 20 patients, visual sensitivity to detail of medium coarseness was markedly degraded, even though sensitivity to both coarse and fine detail was unimpaired. In 3 of these 20 patients visual sensitivity to coarse detail was select

Visual Contrast Sensitivity Improvement by Right Frontal High-Beta Activity Is Mediated by Contrast Gain Mechanisms and Influenced by Fronto-Parietal White Matter Microstructure.

Behavioral and electrophysiological studies in humans and non-human primates have correlated frontal high-beta activity with the orienting of endogenous attention and shown the ability of the latter function to modulate visual performance. We here combined rhythmic transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and diffusion imaging to study the relation between frontal oscillatory activity and visual performance, and we associated these phenomena to a specific set of white matter pathways that in humans subtend attentional processes. High-beta rhythmic activity on the right frontal eye field (FEF) w

Home-based visual perceptual learning improves contrast sensitivity in Parkinson's disease: a proof-of-concept study.

PURPOSE: To assess whether visual perceptual learning (VPL) enhances contrast sensitivity function (CSF) in Parkinson's disease (PD); as a secondary exploratory aim, to describe whether the two protocols targeting different spatial frequency ranges produced differential effects. METHODS: Seventeen patients with PD were randomized to two VPL protocols using dichoptic Gabor patch video-games for 30 minutes/day, six days/week, over 8 weeks. The M-H group trained at 8-16 cpd and the L-M group at 0.5-2 cpd. CSF was measured at baseline, 2, 4, and 8 weeks. BCVA and VIPD-Q were assessed at baseline

Mapping human visual contrast sensitivity and vision loss across the visual field with model-based fMRI.

Peripheral vision is crucial for daily activities and quality of life, yet traditional measures of visual function like visual acuity primarily assess central vision. Visual field tests can evaluate peripheral vision but require extended focus and precise fixation, often challenging for patients with severe sight loss. Functional MRI (fMRI) with population receptive field (pRF) mapping offers a non-invasive way to map scotomas but relies on single contrast levels and accurate fixation. We developed an fMRI-based approach to measure contrast sensitivity across the visual field without requiring

Theta burst stimulation of the visual cortex does not alter contrast sensitivity under optically induced blur.

This study investigated whether a single session of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), specifically theta burst stimulation (TBS), acutely modulates visual function under conditions of induced optical defocus. Twelve adults with normal or corrected-to-normal vision participated in a pre-registered, within-subject, double-blind, sham-controlled study. Participants first adapted to an experimentally induced + 1.50D optical blur for 10 minutes. Following this, stimulation was applied to the primary visual cortex according to a pre-randomised allocation. Stimulation consisted of c

Central Contrast Sensitivity as an Outcome Measure in Randomized Controlled Trials in Glaucoma-A Systematic Review.

Purpose: Standard automated perimetry (SAP) remains the gold standard functional test in glaucoma, used primarily for evaluating peripheral vision loss. Central contrast sensitivity (CCS) has emerged as a potential early functional marker of glaucomatous damage. This systematic review aimed to describe the different methods used to measure CCS in randomized controlled trials (RCT) involving glaucoma patients. Methods: We searched the MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Epistemonikos, and ClinicalTrials.gov databases on 25 January 2023, and updated the searc

Molecular-Specific Optical Coherence Tomography Contrast Agents for High-Sensitivity In Vivo Detection of Corneal Injury.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a powerful tool for in vivo corneal imaging; however, its diagnostic precision is hampered by a lack of molecular specificity. To overcome this limitation, we designed and synthesized CD44 aptamer-conjugated gold nanoparticles (AP-GNPs) as a molecularly targeted OCT contrast agent for the quantitative assessment of corneal injury. AP-GNPs specifically bind to CD44, a biomarker overexpressed in injured corneal tissue, leading to enhanced signal intensity and prolonged retention at the lesion site compared to nontargeted nanoparticles. In the alkali burn mou

Impact of Tinted Lenses on Contrast Sensitivity, Color Vision, and Visual Reaction Time in Young Adults.

Background Visual performance relies on essential functions such as contrast sensitivity, color vision, and visual reaction time. While studies have suggested that tinted lenses can enhance these visual functions, their effects on specific aspects remain insufficiently explored. Understanding the potential benefits and implications of tinted lenses is crucial for prescription considerations. This study aims to address this gap by evaluating the influence of tinted lenses on visual functions in young emmetropic adults. Methodology This prospective, cross-sectional study, approved by the institu
