Detection of causal relationships between factors influencing adverse side-effects from anaesthesia and convalescence following surgery: a path analytical approach.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The anaesthesiologist's preoperative interview with the patient is important in preparing the patient for surgery. Its potential protective influence on adverse side-effects from anaesthesia and convalescence is rarely investigated within the context of other perioperative factors. Structural equation modelling allows detection and quantification of all causal relationships and mediator effects in multivariate models. Therefore, this method is presented as a tool and applied to discover the influence of the preoperative interview within socio-demographic variables and

Increased height gain of children fed a high-protein diet during convalescence from shigellosis: a six-month follow-Up study.

The impact of dietary supplementation on catch-up growth was evaluated in 69 malnourished children ages 24-60 mo after recovery from shigellosis. They were fed either a high-protein (HP) diet with 15% of energy as protein, or a standard-protein (SP) diet with 7.5% energy as protein, for 3 wk in a metabolic study ward. Children were followed up bi-weekly for 6 mo by trained health assistants when anthropometric measurements and information of any illness were collected. Thirty-one children in the HP group and 28 children in the SP group completed 6-mo follow-up. The increase in height (mean +/-

Levels of certain endothelial biomarkers during the acute phase and convalescence in patients with different severity of Mediterranean spotted fever.

INTRODUCTION: Mediterranean spotted fever (MSF) is a tick-borne disease caused by Rickettsia conorii subspp. conorii. It is transmitted by the bite of the tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus. Modified by the rickettsial invasion, the micro-vascular endothelium acquires an activated inflammatory phenotype and initiates secretion of cytokines and expression of cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) and chemoattractans. AIM: This study aims at investigating the alterations in the soluble cellular adhesion molecules (sCAMs) and chemokine MCP-1 levels in patients with MSF of varying severity in the acute and co

T2 mapping of the heart: correlation with measures of cardiopulmonary MRI in COVID-19 convalescents.

PURPOSE: Alterations in myocardial and blood pool relaxation times may be due to physiologic change or pathological factors. Blood T2 relaxation time is sensitive to oxygenation changes. We aimed to assess the association between indices of cardiopulmonary circulation and cardiac parametric mapping. METHODS: 213 adults recovered from COVID-19 infection (96 men, mean age 55 ± 14 years) were scanned at a 3 T MRI. Left and right ventricular (LV and RV) function and structure were measured in the cine images. Normalized pulmonary transit time (nPTT), pulmonary and aortic full width half maximum (

Impact of Recurrence on Functional Independence in Stroke Patients Treated in a Convalescent Rehabilitation Hospital.

PURPOSE: Outcome prediction is a crucial component of rehabilitation in post-stroke patients. However, only a few studies have focused on the influence of stroke recurrence on outcomes in these patients. This study aimed to determine the impact of stroke recurrence on functional independence using data from a convalescent rehabilitation hospital. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included stroke patients who were admitted to our convalescent rehabilitation hospital. Data were collected on age, stroke recurrence, and number of days between stroke onset and transfer to our facility. Scores for t

Evaluation of Pulmonary Function in Post-convalescent COVID-19 Adults: A Comparative Insight.

Background and objective COVID-19 is a respiratory disease that is highly contagious and is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Symptoms vary from mild to severe, where most of the patients suffer from high fever, severe headaches, dry cough, and exhaustion, while the less common symptoms are diarrhea, loss of taste, sore throat, and loss of smell. Following recovery from COVID-19, some patients displayed a restricted pattern in the function of their lungs. As a result, documenting the effects of COVID-19 after infection is essential since it provides a bett

Convalescent Adaptive Immunity is Highly Heterogenous after SARS-CoV-2 Infection.

Optimal detection strategies for effective convalescent immunity after SARS-CoV-2 infection and vaccination remain unclear. The objective of this study was to characterize convalescent immunity targeting the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein using a multiparametric approach. At the beginning of the pandemic, between April 23, 2020, to May 11, 2020, we recruited 30 COVID-19 unvaccinated convalescent donors and 7 unexposed asymptomatic donors. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were obtained from leukapheresis cones. The humoral immune response was assessed by measuring serum anti-SARS-CoV-2 spik
