Anatomic variation of the coracoacromial ligament: a macroscopic and microscopic cadaveric study.

The operative management of the subacromial impingement syndrome includes reconstruction in cases with ruptured tendons and enlargement of the subacromial space by arthroscopic or open resection of the coracoacromial ligament and acromioplasty. In nearly 20% of all cases, however, surgical treatment fails. This study was conducted with 124 cadaver shoulders of older specimens with a balanced male/female ratio. The coracoacromial ligament did not present homogenous morphologic characteristics. We found 25.8% of all ligaments undivided, 59.7% bipartite, and 14.5% consisted of three parts. The th

The coracoid transfer for recurrent dislocation of the shoulder. Technical aspects of the Bristow-Latarjet procedure.

One hundred and twelve shoulders with recurrent anterior dislocation were treated with the Bristow-Latarjet procedure and had a two to five-year follow-up after surgery. The incidence of redislocation was 6 per cent, and an additional 7 per cent of the patients reported occasional subluxation. In 106 shoulders, a radiographic study was carried out in order to determine the importance of factors such as healing and position of the transferred coracoid process with regard to the postoperative clinical results. No redislocation or subluxation occurred in the forty patients in whom the transplant

One hundred eighteen Bristow-Latarjet repairs for recurrent anterior dislocation of the shoulder prospectively followed for fifteen years: study II-the evolution of dislocation arthropathy.

Dislocation arthropathy after surgical treatment of recurrent anterior dislocation of the shoulder has been a subject of discussion over the years. The objective of this prospective study was to evaluate the Bristow-Latarjet repair at 2 and 15 years after surgery with respect to arthropathy and to evaluate factors responsible for this development. At 2 and 15 years after a Bristow-Latarjet repair for recurrent anterior dislocation, we prospectively analyzed the radiographs of 115 of 118 shoulders. The majority of the patients also had radiography of the nonindex shoulder (111/118). Dislocation

Comparing Bristow and Latarjet procedures for anterior shoulder instability in competitive rugby players: a unique within-subject clinical analysis.

BACKGROUND: Anterior shoulder instability is a significant concern in collision sports like rugby, often requiring surgical intervention. The Bristow and Latarjet procedures are commonly performed coracoid transfer techniques alongside Bankart repair; however, direct comparisons of their clinical outcomes within the same individuals remain unexplored. This study aimed to compare the clinical outcomes of the Bristow and Latarjet procedures in competitive rugby players who underwent both surgeries on contralateral shoulders. We hypothesized that the Bristow procedure would yield superior patient

In vivo analysis of coracoid and subacromial shoulder impingement mechanism during clinical examination.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the mechanisms of shoulder impingement created by clinical tests is crucial to accurately evaluate the condition. The objective of this study was to relate mechanisms of subacromial and coracoid impingement occurring in positions of the shoulder during clinical examination, in quantitative and qualitative terms. METHODS: A 1.0T open magnetic resonance imaging system was used in 18 female and 19 male subjects, to determine the distances between the humeral head and the acromion or coracoid, and contact with the rotator cuff (RC). Measurements were taken with the shoul

Coracohumeral distance and coracoid overlap as predictors of subscapularis and long head of the biceps injuries.

BACKGROUND: Subscapularis (SS) lesions are often underdiagnosed because of an incomplete understanding of contributing factors but also because of a greater difficulty in SS tear diagnosis with magnetic resonance imaging or physical examination. In this setting, predicting factors can be useful tools in these injuries' management. The goal of this study was to determine the influence of the coracohumeral distance (CHD) and coracoid overlap (CO) in anterior rotator cuff lesions, as well as to determine the CHD and CO values that can accurately predict SS and long head of the biceps (LHB) injuri

Latarjet Procedure for Recurrent Anterior Shoulder Instability.

BACKGROUND: The Latarjet procedure is widely used to treat recurrent anterior shoulder instability, especially in cases with significant glenoid bone loss. The procedure involves transferring the coracoid process to the anterior inferior glenoid. Typically performed as an open surgery, arthroscopic Laterjet techniques have evolved, each offering unique benefits and challenges. INDICATIONS: The Latarjet procedure is indicated for patients with recurrent anterior shoulder instability, particularly those with substantial glenoid bone loss (typically >20%), or failed soft tissue (Bankart) repairs

The antero-inferior (transmuscular) approach for arthroscopic repair of the Bankart lesion: an anatomic and clinical study.

In order to find a direct approach to the antero-inferior third of the glenoid rim, an anatomic study was performed on a total of 89 shoulders (48 cadavers). To obtain defined reference points for the anterior inferior third of the glenoid cavity, it was compared with the hour markings on a clock face. The 4:30 position on the right shoulder and the 7:30 position on the left shoulder were defined as the relevant reference points. The average distance between the palpable end of the coracoid process and the 4:30 and 7:30 positions was 19 mm. The average distance to the point of intersection of

New findings in the identification of adult vitamin D deficiency osteomalacia: Results from a large-scale study.

This is the first systematic large-scale palaeopathological study of adult vitamin D deficiency osteomalacia. One thousand one hundred and eighty-one skeletons from multiple urban contexts in post-mediaeval England (c. AD 1700-1855) were analysed. Twelve adults with evidence of osteomalacia were identified. When added to the seven cases previously identified by Brickley et al. (2007) the individual prevalence rate increased to 19 of 1323 individuals (1.43%). New lesions affecting the medial ilium, scapula coracoid process, proximal femur and vertebrae are presented. These are infrequently occu

[The unstable shoulder in young subjects. Surgical experience].

The stability of the scapulo humeral joint depends on three anatomical factors: bony: surface and integrity of the glenoid cavity. ligamentous: joint capsula and labrum glenoïdale. muscular: coordination and condition of the components of the rotator cuff that maintains the humeral head in the center of the joint, whatever be the position of the arm. Clinically, the most frequent aspect is the anterior recurrent dislocation, occurring in young patients.... Other forms are possible: posterior, multi directional, associated with a lesion of the rotator cuff in elderly patients.... Lately a new a

A comparative study on the validity and reliability of anterior, medial, and posterior approaches for internal fixation in the repair of fractures of the coronoid process of the ulna.

BACKGROUND: The coracoid process plays an important role in maintaining the stability of the elbow joint. A fracture of the coronoid process is often treated via surgical approaches, including open reduction and internal fixation, which aim to regain a stable, flexible, and loadable joint. In this study, we compared the anterior, medial, and posterior approaches of internal fixation in the repair of fractures of the coronoid process of the ulna. METHODS: In this retrospective study, 147 patients with fractures in the coronoid process of the ulna were recruited and classified into the anterior

Coracoid bone block transfer procedure: Correlation between subscapularis volume below the bone graft and shoulder stability.

INTRODUCTION: Coracoid bone graft transfer has become the gold standard in patients with recurrent anterior shoulder instability associated with bony defect. Several studies have shown that the main stabilizing component of this procedure is the sling effect by the conjoint tendon and the lower portion of subscapularis (SS). The purpose of this study was to determine whether a larger SS volume below the bone block was correlated to greater postoperative shoulder stability. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective study included a cohort of patients who underwent open coracoid bone graft transf

Arthroscopy-Assisted Fixation of Combined Coracoid Fracture and Acromioclavicular Dislocation: A Minimalist Approach.

Combined acromioclavicular dislocation and coracoid process fracture disrupts the superior shoulder suspensory complex, leading to shoulder instability that often requires surgical intervention. This rare injury, increasingly identified through advanced diagnostics, lacks consensus on the optimal treatment. We describe a minimalist arthroscopy-assisted technique using a single cannulated screw for simultaneous fixation of both injuries. The procedure involves lateral decubitus positioning, diagnostic arthroscopy with a 70° scope for fracture visualization and debridement, ACL drill guide-assis

Comparative Anatomy of the Coracobrachialis Muscle: Insights into Human Typical and Variant Morphology.

The coracobrachialis muscle (CB) is a phylogenetically conserved component of the anterior compartment of the upper limb, offering critical insights into evolutionary anatomy, developmental biology, and human morphological variation. This mini review synthesizes findings from comparative anatomical studies, embryological data, cadaveric dissections, and clinical reports to explore the CB's morphology, ontogeny, and medical relevance. Among tetrapods, the CB consistently originates from the coracoid process and inserts into the humerus, with interspecies morphological adaptations reflecting spe
