Regional dynamics drive differences in future heat stress and reveal where Hawaiian corals are most likely to persist.

The Hawaiian Islands cause significant disruption to North Pacific oceanic and atmospheric flows creating highly localized spatial variability of ocean conditions on coral reefs. This variability affects climate impacts on these corals but is unresolved in global climate models. Using a dynamically downscaled model to resolve future conditions at high temporal (daily) and spatial (4 km) resolution for the Hawaiian Islands, we investigate projected heat stress and the adaptation rate required for corals to withstand projected end of century warming for three different emission scenarios. In the

Consequences of yellow band disease (YBD) on Montastraea annularis (species complex) populations on remote reefs off Mona Island, Puerto Rico.

The rate and extent of mortality from yellow band disease (YBD) to Montastraea annularis (species complex) on reefs off Mona Island, Puerto Rico, was evaluated over 8 yr. Isolated YBD infections were first observed in 1996. Prevalence of YBD increased dramatically in 1999, with a maximum of 52 % of all M. annularis colonies infected in 1 shallow site. YBD continued to spread among adjacent, previously uninfected corals over the next 4 yr, and disease prevalence progressively increased in deeper sites. Linear rates of disease advance and tissue mortality have been slow (5 to 15 cm yr(-1)), alth

Intermediate host switches drive diversification among the largest trematode family: evidence from the Polypipapiliotrematinae n. subf. (Opecoelidae), parasites transmitted to butterflyfishes via predation of coral polyps.

Podocotyloides stenometra Pritchard, 1966 (Digenea: Opecoelidae) is the only trematode known to infect anthozoan corals. It causes disease in coral polyps of the genus Porites Link (Scleractinia: Poritidae) and its life-cycle depends on ingestion of these polyps by butterflyfishes (Perciformes: Chaetodontidae). This species has been reported throughout the Indo-Pacific, from the Seychelles to the Galápagos, but no study has investigated whether multiple species are involved. Here, we recollect P. stenometra from its type-host and type-locality, in Hawaiian waters, and describe four new species

Benthic and fish community composition on mesophotic reefs in Grand Cayman.

Mesophotic Coral Ecosystems (MCEs) represent unique ecological habitats that range from 30 to 150 m deep, harbouring phylogenetically distinct species and offering refuge for many taxa during times of environmental stress. Yet owing to inaccessibility of ecosystems at these depths, most MCEs remain unexplored, with quantifications of ecological communities in these habitats lacking across many regions. Here, using open- and closed-circuit technical diving, we quantified benthic and fish community composition at four mesophotic reef sites (45 m depth) in Grand Cayman. We show significant differ

Low susceptibility of invasive red lionfish (Pterois volitans) to a generalist ectoparasite in both its introduced and native ranges.

Escape from parasites in their native range is one of many mechanisms that can contribute to the success of an invasive species. Gnathiid isopods are blood-feeding ectoparasites that infest a wide range of fish hosts, mostly in coral reef habitats. They are ecologically similar to terrestrial ticks, with the ability to transmit blood-borne parasites and cause damage or even death to heavily infected hosts. Therefore, being highly resistant or highly susceptible to gnathiids can have significant fitness consequences for reef-associated fishes. Indo-Pacific red lionfish (Pterois volitans) have i

Coral morphology detection in underwater imagery using YOLOv12 with CNN and transformer encoder fusion.

For monitoring marine biodiversity and observing the health of reefs, it's important to be able to accurately see coral morphology in underwater images. Present approaches for finding underwater objects still have problems because light can be absorbed, scattered, or become turbid, and coral morphologies look very similar to each other, which often results in misclassification, erratic localization, and lower accuracy. The present automated detectors, like YOLOv7 and latest newer variants, like YOLOv11, do not work well with underwater image distortions, do not reason well about global feature

Hierarchical YOLO-SAM: A Scalable Pipeline for Automated Segmentation and Morphometric Tracking of Coral Recruits in Time-Series Microscopy.

Coral reef ecosystems are declining rapidly due to climate change, disease, and anthropogenic stressors, driving the expansion of land-based coral propagation for reef restoration. A major bottleneck in these efforts is the manual measurement of coral recruit tissue area from microscopy images, which requires 2-7 min per image and limits scalability. We present a hierarchical deep learning pipeline that automates this measurement by integrating YOLO-based detection with Segment Anything Model (SAM) segmentation. YOLO localizes recruits and classifies them by developmental stage; stage-specific

On a trawled north Pacific seamount, reductions of benthic megafauna abundance, diversity, and ecosystem function are correlated with increased evidence of fishing.

High-seas seamounts in the Hawaiian-Emperor Seamount Chain are exposed to bottom-contact fisheries, i.e., historical and contemporary trawl, coral tangle net, longline, and gillnet fisheries, that disturb vulnerable marine ecosystem megafauna, such as deep-sea corals and sponges. Koko Guyot is the largest of these features and has experienced destructive fishing practices for more than half a century. To better understand the state of vulnerable megafaunal communities on Koko, the submersibles Pisces IV and V obtained high-quality imagery from replicate transects of 500 m length at two sites a

Food web trophic control modulates tropical Atlantic reef ecosystems response to marine heat wave intensity and duration.

Marine heatwaves (MHWs) are episodes of anomalous warming in the ocean that can last from a few days to years. MHWs have different characteristics in terms of intensity, duration and frequency and generate thermal stress in marine ecosystems. In reef ecosystems, they are one of the main causes of the decreased presence and abundance of corals, invertebrates and fish. The deleterious capacity of thermal stress often depends on biotic factors, such as the trophic control of predators on prey. Despite the evidence of thermal stress and biotic factors affecting individual species, the combined eff

pH regulation in coral photosymbiosis and calcification: a compartmental perspective.

The coral-dinoflagellate photosymbiosis and coral calcification underpin shallow water, coral reef ecosystems. This review examines the pivotal role of pH regulation in the cell physiology of these processes. Despite simple tissue organization, photosymbiotic corals maintain a complex internal microenvironment, with distinct compartments exhibiting contrasting pH levels. For example, the acidic 'symbiosome' surrounds the algal symbionts, while the alkaline 'extracellular calcifying medium' occurs at the growing front of the skeleton. We discuss how pH regulation of these compartments is crucia

Heterotrophy in tropical scleractinian corals.

The dual character of corals, that they are both auto- and heterotrophs, was recognized early in the twentieth Century. It is generally accepted that the symbiotic association between corals and their endosymbiotic algae (called zooxanthellae) is fundamental to the development of coral reefs in oligotrophic tropical oceans because zooxanthellae transfer the major part of their photosynthates to the coral host (autotrophic nutrition). However, numerous studies have confirmed that many species of corals are also active heterotrophs, ingesting organisms ranging from bacteria to mesozooplankton. H

Effect of Aggregate Size on the Axial Compressive Behavior of FRP-Confined Coral Aggregate Concrete.

Using locally available raw materials for preparing concrete, such as coral reefs, seawater, and sea sand, is conducive to compensating for the shortage of construction materials used on remote islands. Jacketing fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP), as passive confinement, is a practical approach to enhance the strength, ductility, and durability of such coral aggregate concrete (CAC). Rational and economical CAC structural design requires understanding the interactions between the CAC fracture process and FRP confinement. The coral aggregate size is the critical parameter of their interaction sinc

Impacts of humic substances, elevated temperature, and UVB radiation on bacterial communities of the marine sponge Chondrilla sp.

Sponges are abundant components of coral reefs known for their filtration capabilities and intricate interactions with microbes. They play a crucial role in maintaining the ecological balance of coral reefs. Humic substances (HS) affect bacterial communities across terrestrial, freshwater, and marine ecosystems. However, the specific effects of HS on sponge-associated microbial symbionts have largely been neglected. Here, we used a randomized-controlled microcosm setup to investigate the independent and interactive effects of HS, elevated temperature, and UVB radiation on bacterial communities

Ciguatera in the Pacific: a link with military activities.

Ciguatera fish poisoning is widespread in the Pacific. Outbreaks and the rise in incidence of the disease are related largely to military activities that disturb coral reef ecology. Nuclear test explosions and the setting up of the infrastructure for these tests are major components of such military activity.

Cellular mechanisms of Cnidarian bleaching: stress causes the collapse of symbiosis.

Cnidarian bleaching is a breakdown in the mutualistic symbiosis between host Cnidarians, such as reef building corals, and their unicellular photosynthetic dinoflagellate symbionts. Bleaching is caused by a variety of environmental stressors, most notably elevated temperatures associated with global climate change in conjunction with high solar radiation, and it is a major contributor to coral death and reef degradation. This review examines the underlying cellular events that lead to symbiosis dysfunction and cause bleaching, emphasizing that, to date, we have only some pieces of a complex ce

Different transfer pathways of an organochlorine pesticide across marine tropical food webs assessed with stable isotope analysis.

Chlordecone is a persistent organochlorine pesticide used in the banana fields of the French West Indies from 1972 to 1993. Three marine habitats (mangroves, seagrass beds and coral reefs) of two study sites located downstream contaminated rivers were chosen to evaluate the level of contamination of marine food webs. On each habitat, the food chain collected included suspended organic matter, primary producers (macroalgae, algal turf, seagrass), zooplankton, symbiotic organisms (corals, sea anemones), primary consumers (herbivores, suspension feeders, biofilm feeders), omnivores and detritivor

Sustained release of beneficial microorganisms for corals from alginate beads under marine conditions.

AIM: Coral reefs support more than one-third of the global marine biodiversity, but global stressors have negatively impacted their health by disrupting fragile microbial partnerships, leading to widespread mass bleaching events. To address this issue, the use of beneficial microorganisms for coral (BMCs) has been shown to enhance coral resilience. In this study, we evaluated the potential of alginate beads as a delivery method for BMCs underwater. METHODS AND RESULTS: BMCs were encapsulated in alginate beads and incubated in artificial seawater at 26°C and 32°C. Microbial viability within th

Concentrations of Irgarol in selected marinas of Oahu, Hawaii and effects on settlement of coral larval.

This study examined concentrations of Irgarol 1051(®) in selected marinas on the island of Oahu, Hawaii and used laboratory bioassays to assess effects of Irgarol on coral larval settlement. Field surveys of small boat marinas performed in 2006-2007 revealed low concentrations of Irgarol 1051(®), an antifouling paint additive, ranging from non-detected (<17 ng/l) to 283 ng/l. The highest concentrations of Irgarol 1051(®) were found in marinas with low flushing rates and a high density of moored boats and boat traffic. The potential effect of Irgarol 1051(®) on coral larval settlement was evalu

Origin and impacts of ploidy variation in the coral Pocillopora acuta in Hawai'i.

Differences in ploidy impact fitness, shaping adaptation and evolutionary trajectories. Although polyploidy has been documented in corals, the mechanisms that give rise to polyploidy and the phenotypic consequences of this variation are unknown. We established a model population of 326 Pocillopora acuta colonies in Kāne'ohe Bay, Hawai'i, and used RAD sequencing of these samples and historical collections to define clonal lineages, ploidy state, and mechanistic origin of polyploidy in each colony. We also measured growth, morphometrics, thermal tolerance, and fecundity in common-gardened corals

Potential drivers of pocilloporid coral extirpations in Singapore.

The reason why four out of five historically recorded pocilloporid species in Singapore went extinct remains unclear. However, potential causes include urbanization-related stressors such as sedimentation and low light. In this study, we conducted two ex-situ experiments to examine the effects of light limitation and sediment load on the survival and health of two extirpated (Stylophora pistillata, and Seriatopora hystrix), one extant (Pocillopora acuta), and one regional (Pocillopora meandrina) pocilloporid species. All were able to photoacclimate to high sedimentation and low light condition
