BACKGROUND: Exposure to second-hand tobacco smoke is preventable, yet common. This study assessed relationships between maternal exposure to second-hand tobacco smoke and adverse pregnancy outcomes.
METHODS: We measured cotinine (a biomarker of tobacco smoke) in urine from 921 women undergoing assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) between 1994 and 1998. We also collected information on self-reported exposure to second-hand smoke at home or at work, in addition to parental smoking during the women's childhood.
RESULTS: In crude analysis, creatinine-adjusted cotinine levels were associated

One hundred thirty-two children who attended a research day-care center were studied to determine whether passive tobacco smoke exposure was associated with an increased rate of otitis media with effusion or with an increased number of days with otitis media with effusion during the first 3 years of life. Based on preliminary studies, a serum cotinine concentration of greater than or equal to 2.5 ng/mL was considered indicative of exposure to tobacco smoke. Otitis media with effusion was diagnosed using pneumatic otoscopy by nurse practitioners and pediatricians who reviewed the children's hea

The present study aimed to find a correlation between the self-reported smoking status of the residents of Tehran, Iran, and the urine cotinine as a biomarker of exposure to tobacco smoke. The self-reported data was collected from 222 participants who were living in the urban area of Tehran. The urine samples of participants were collected for cotinine analysis. Urine cotinine was measured by an enzymatic immunoassay technique. Tobacco smoking was reported by 76 (34.23 %) participants as the self-reported data, and the number of males in this report was higher than of females (p < 0.001). By a

AIM: While there are sufficient data regarding the negative effect of exposure to the constituents of tobacco smoke on newborn infants' birth weights, it is still unclear whether this effect may originate in early pregnancy. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the impact of exposure to tobacco smoke components in early pregnancy (20-24 weeks) on fetal biometry.
METHODS: The study population comprised 183 women consecutively enrolled at 20-24 weeks of pregnancy at the two antenatal care units. Ultrasound biometric measurements of fetal bi-parietal diameter (BPD), abdominal circumferen

Measurement of population tobacco use via wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) provides objective data to evaluate the efficacy of tobacco control strategies. However, current WBE tobacco-use estimates based on nicotine metabolites (cotinine and hydroxycotinine) can be masked by use of non-tobacco nicotine-containing products. To better understand nicotine and tobacco use, we analysed tobacco-specific biomarkers, anabasine and anatabine, as well as nicotine metabolites, cotinine and hydroxycotinine, in wastewater samples collected for 6 weeks per year over 6 years (2012-2017) from an Australian

BACKGROUND: Understanding the relationship between different dimensions of nicotine cravings and smoking behavior is crucial for addressing nicotine dependence. This study examined how morning cravings and past-week cravings relate to nicotine intake, as measured by salivary cotinine, and the mediating role of cigarettes per day (CPD) and time to first cigarette (TTFC).
METHODS: Data were obtained as part of the Pennsylvania Adult Smoking Study (PASS), a community-based study of adult smokers. Participants (N = 353) completed structured questionnaires assessing smoking behaviors, cravings, an

Although electronic cigarettes have been banned in Brazil since 2009, their use is increasing, particularly among youth. We conducted a biomarker-based study to profile exclusive e-cigarette users in São Paulo and to examine the associations of e-cigarette use with salivary nicotine and cotinine levels. A population-based, cross-sectional study was conducted between April and September 2024 in six municipalities in São Paulo, Brazil. Randomly selected participants who reported exclusive use of electronic cigarettes completed a questionnaire and provided oral fluid samples for the determination

Intrauterine tobacco, lead, and cocaine exposure often co-occur and may affect fetal growth and development, yet studies of gestational cocaine effects have not adequately measured lead or tobacco. In this anonymous survey, blood lead and urine cotinine levels were determined and mothers were queried about tobacco use. Eighteen cocaine-exposed mother-infant dyads had higher lead and cotinine levels than 46 random nonexposed dyads, regardless of reported cigarette smoking. Crude growth decrements in cocaine-exposed newborns were attenuated after control for lead and cotinine. Future studies of

We investigated if prenatal exposures to tobacco smoke lead to changes in mitochondrial DNA content (mtDNA) in cord serum and adversely affect newborns' health. Umbilical cord serum cotinine levels were used to determine in utero exposure to smoking. Cord serum mtDNA was measured by quantitative polymerase chain reaction analysis of the genes coding for cytochrome c oxidase1 (MT-CO1) and cytochrome c oxidase2 (MT-CO2). Log transformed levels of mtDNA coding for MT-CO1 and MT-CO2 were significantly higher among infants of active smokers with higher serum level of cotinine (p < 0.05) and inverse

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This investigation compared cotinine (primary metabolite of nicotine) at study intake to self-report metrics (e.g., Fagerstrom Test of Nicotine Dependence [FTND]) and assessed their relative ability to predict smoking outcomes.
METHODS: We used data from an analog model of contingency management for cigarette smoking. Non-treatment seeking participants (N = 103) could earn money in exchange for provision of a negative carbon monoxide (CO) sample indicating smoking abstinence, but were otherwise not motivated to quit. We used intake cotinine, FTND, percent of friends

The exposition to tobacco smoke is overall: in home, work and public places. For the examination of the presence and concentration of environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) in indoor environments the nicotine and respirable suspended particulates (RSP) are determined. A variety of biomarkers (nicotine, cotinine, thiocyanate, carboxyhemoglobin, protein and DNA adducts) are propose for measurement of exposure to tobacco smoke. The most popular is measurement of cotinine concentration in body fluids (blood, urine, saliva). Plasma cotinine concentration correlated to numbers of cigarettes smoked and to

BACKGROUND: In countries like Turkey where smoking is highly prevalent, children's exposure to tobacco smoke is an important public health problem. The goals of this study were to determine the self-reported environmental tobacco smoke exposure status of primary school students in grades 3 to 5, to verify self-reported exposure levels with data provided from a biomarker of exposure, and to develop methods for preventing school children from passive smoking.
METHODS: The study was conducted on 347 primary school students by using a standard questionnaire and urinary cotinine tests. Children wi

Female reproductive aging, commonly reflected by menopausal age and reproductive lifespan, is influenced by environmental exposures and metabolic health, and tobacco exposure has been associated with earlier menopause and shortened reproductive lifespan. Because this association may involve inflammatory activation and lipid-metabolic alterations, the platelet-to-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (PHR) may provide a useful composite marker for evaluating tobacco-related reproductive aging. We analyzed data from 6048 women in the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1999

Exposure to tobacco smoke during pregnancy has been associated with a series of adverse reproductive outcomes; however, the underlying molecular mechanisms are not well-established. We conducted an untargeted metabolome-wide association study to identify the metabolic perturbations and molecular mechanisms underlying the association between cotinine, a widely used biomarker of tobacco exposure, and adverse birth outcomes. We collected early and late pregnancy urine samples for cotinine measurement and serum samples for high-resolution metabolomics (HRM) profiling from 105 pregnant women from t

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Smokers can regulate their nicotine intake by altering the number of cigarettes smoked per day (CPD) and their smoking intensity. The current study aimed to compare the utility of self-reported CPD, total nicotine equivalents (TNE) and urinary cotinine to estimate nicotine intake during pregnancy.
DESIGN: Longitudinal smoking behavior and biomarker data were collected at early pregnancy, late pregnancy and at postpartum as part of a smoking cessation trial to examine voucher-based incentives for decreasing smoking.

OBJECTIVE: There is no safe level of secondhand tobacco-smoke exposure, and no previous studies have explored multiunit housing as a potential contributor to secondhand tobacco-smoke exposure in children. We hypothesized that children who live in apartments have higher cotinine levels than those who live in detached homes, when controlling for demographics.
METHODS: We analyzed data from the 2001-2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The housing types we included in our study were detached houses (including mobile homes), attached houses, and apartments. Our study subjects we

OBJECTIVE: This exploratory study investigates the association between smoking and premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) to inform smoking cessation strategies and support women's reproductive health.
METHODS: Using literature data mining and association rule analysis, we constructed a protein-protein interaction (PPI) network to identify potential core targets associated with POI. Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analyses were performed to explore biological functions and signaling pathways potentially involved in POI pathophysiology. BACKGROUND: Unlike schizophrenia, only a little attention has been paid to tobacco dependence in patients with bipolar disorder despite a similarly high prevalence and predisposition to health risks. The euthymic phase is especially suitable for tobacco screening by the treating psychiatrist. However, the validity of self-report for tobacco use in this patient population remains undetermined.
AIM: The current study aims to assess the validity of self-reported tobacco use in euthymic bipolar disorder.
METHOD: The psychiatric out-patients with DSM-IV TR diagnosis of bipolar type-I in remission
