Do Mediterranean crickets Gryllus bimaculatus De Geer (Orthoptera: Gryllidae) come from the Mediterranean? Largescale phylogeography and regional gene flow.

We investigate the degree of between-population genetic differentiation in the Mediterranean field cricket Gryllus bimaculatus, as well as the possible causes of such differentiation. Using cytochrome b mtDNA sequences, we estimate genetic variation in G. bimaculatus from seven South African and two Mediterranean populations. Within-population genetic variation in Europe (two haplotypes, one unique to a single individual) suggest low effective population size and strong bottlenecks with associated founder effects, probably due to cold winter environments in Europe that limit reproduction to a

An urge to explain the incomprehensible: Geoffrey Harris and the discovery of the neural control of the pituitary gland.

Geoffrey Harris is responsible for our view that the brain controls the endocrine system by an exquisitely regulated pattern of synthesis and release of individual members of a family of peptide hormones. These hormones are carried through a portal vascular system that passes from the hypothalamus to the pituitary gland, where they selectively regulate the secretion of the six anterior pituitary hormones. This family of hypothalamic hormones is highly conserved in all vertebrates, including humans. They are essential for all aspects of reproduction--courtship, mating, pregnancy and young reari

Effects of interleukin-1 on sexual attractivity in a model of sickness behavior.

Interleukin-1 (IL-1), a cytokine secreted by activated macrophages, inhibits sexual behavior in female but not male rats. The present study examined the effects of IL-1 on sexual attractiveness of the injected animal and on the sexual responses exhibited by its mating partner. In Experiment 1, a male rat was placed with an estrous female, injected with either IL-1 beta (2 or 10 micrograms/kg) or saline. Males exhibited more mounts and intromissions per ejaculation and longer ejaculation latencies with IL-1- than with saline-injected females. In a second experiment, a male was placed with two e

Purification and cDNA cloning of HeLa cell p54nrb, a nuclear protein with two RNA recognition motifs and extensive homology to human splicing factor PSF and Drosophila NONA/BJ6.

While searching for a human homolog of the S.cerevisiae splicing factor PRP18, we found a polypeptide that reacted strongly with antibodies against PRP18. We purified this polypeptide from HeLa cells using a Western blot assay, and named it p54nrb (for nuclear RNA-binding protein, 54 kDa). cDNAs encoding p54nrb were cloned with probes derived from partial sequence of the purified protein. These cDNAs have identical coding sequences but differ as a result of alternative splicing in the 5' untranslated region. The cDNAs encode a 471 aa polypeptide that contains two RNA recognition motifs (RRMs).

Altered endocrine and behavioral responses with reproductive aging in the male Japanese quail.

Experiments were conducted to further characterize the age-related decline in reproductive capability previously described in the male Japanese quail. Behavioral testing of a large number of males in several age groups confirmed earlier results that showed a significant reduction in courtship and mating behavior by 80 weeks of age. Intact males, 78 weeks of age, that showed no reproductive behavior were given Silastic implants containing testosterone. This treatment restored behavior in 80% of the males. Gonadal regression induced by exposure to shortened photoperiod followed by transfer to a

Impressions of HIV risk online: Brain potentials while viewing online dating profiles.

There is an increasing trend to use online dating to meet potential partners. Previous studies in off-line contexts indicate that people may judge the risk of sexually transmitted infections based on a person's appearance. Online dating profiles commonly present profile pictures and verbal self-descriptions. To examine the integration of verbal and visual risk information, the current event-related potential (ERP) study used a simulated dating platform in which verbal-descriptive information (low vs. high verbal risk) was presented, followed by a photograph (low vs. high visual risk). Results

"A Match Made...Online?" The Effects of User-Generated Online Dater Profile Types (Free-Spirited Versus Uptight) on Other Users' Perception of Trustworthiness, Interpersonal Attraction, and Personality.

This study tested the effects of an online dater's profile type (open/free-spirited vs. traditional/uptight) on people's perception of the dater's trustworthiness, interpersonal attraction, and Big Five personality traits (agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, openness, and extraversion). Interpersonal deception theory, theories of attraction, and source credibility model inform this research, providing a theoretical foundation for the proposed research questions and hypothesis. This research employed a simple two-group comparison experiment (open/free-spirited dater profile vs. tradi

Media depictions of physical and relational aggression: connections with aggression in young adults' romantic relationships.

Various studies have found that viewing physical or relational aggression in the media can impact subsequent engagement in aggressive behavior. However, this has rarely been examined in the context of relationships. Accordingly, the aim of this study was to examine the connection between viewing various types of aggression in the media and perpetration of aggression against a romantic partner. A total of 369 young adults completed a variety of questionnaires asking for their perpetration of various forms of relationship aggression. Participants' exposure to both physical and relational aggress

Stalking and other forms of intrusive contact after the dissolution of adolescent dating or romantic relationships.

Social science research has recently begun to focus on stalking and other forms of intrusive contact occurring among adolescents and young adults. This article presents results from a survey of 681 undergraduates about their experiences with stalking or other forms of intrusive contact occurring after the end of a dating or romantic relationship. Twenty percent of the respondents had been the target of intrusive contact, 8% had initiated intrusive contact, and 1% had been the target of intrusive contact after one relationship and had initiated intrusive contact after another. More females than

Dating violence victimization across the teen years: abuse frequency, number of abusive partners, and age at first occurrence.

BACKGROUND: Prior longitudinal studies have shown high cumulative dating violence exposure rates among U.S adolescents, with 36 percent of males and 44 percent to 88 percent of females experiencing victimization across adolescence/young adulthood. Despite promising information characterizing adolescents' dating violence experiences longitudinally, prior studies tended to concentrate on physical and sexual types of violence only, and did not report information on the number of times dating violence was experienced across multiple abusive partners. We used a method similar to the timeline follow

Interpersonal forgiving in close relationships: II. Theoretical elaboration and measurement.

Interpersonal forgiving was conceptualized in the context of a 2-factor motivational system that governs people's responses to interpersonal offenses. Four studies were conducted to examine the extent to which forgiving could be predicted with relationship-level variables such as satisfaction, commitment, and closeness; offense-level variables such as apology and impact of the offense; and social-cognitive variables such as offender-focused empathy and rumination about the offense. Also described is the development of the transgression-related interpersonal motivations inventory--a self-report

Genomic and physiological changes in a sexually selected and frugivorous bird radiation.

Across diverse organisms, the strength and ecological drivers of sexual selection vary enormously. In birds, some of the families with the most elaborate plumage and display-such as birds of paradise, manakins, and cotingas-are also specialist frugivores, yet links between shifts in diet, changes in breeding system, and the evolution of elaborate traits are poorly understood. We focus on manakins, a radiation of frugivorous Neotropical birds well known for spectacular courtship rituals and colorful plumage, and present an integrative analysis of the transition in both diet and mating systems i

An Unusual Intraosseous Swelling of the Jaw: Two Rare Case Reports.

The arthropodium is the key innovation of arthropods. Its various modifications are the outcome of multiple evolutionary transformations, and the foundation of nearly endless functional possibilities. In contrast to hexapods, crustaceans, and even chelicerates, the spectrum of evolutionary transformations of myriapod arthropodia is insufficiently documented and rarely scrutinized. Among Myriapoda, Chilopoda (centipedes) are characterized by their venomous forcipules-evolutionarily transformed walking legs of the first trunk segment. In addition, the posterior end of the centipedes' body, in pa

Reproductive biology of harvestmen (Arachnida: Opiliones): a review of a rapidly evolving research field.

Harvestmen are a major arachnid order that has experienced a dramatic increase in biological knowledge in the 21st century. The publication of the book Harvestmen: The Biology of Opiliones in 2007 stimulated the development of many behavioral studies. Although the book is relatively recent, our understanding of the reproductive biology of harvestmen is already outdated due to the fast accumulation of new data. Our goal is to provide an updated review of the subject to serve as a benchmark for the following years. In the pre-copulatory phase, we explore the evolution of facultative parthenogene

Lateral eyes direct principal eyes as jumping spiders track objects.

One way of circumventing the functional tradeoffs on eye design [1,2] is to have different eyes for different tasks. For example, jumping spiders (Salticidae), known for elaborate, visually guided courtship and predatory behavior [3], view the same object simultaneously with two of their four pairs of eyes: the antero-lateral eyes (ALEs) and the principal eyes (reviewed in [2]; Figure 1A). The ALEs, with immobile lenses and retinas, wide fields of view, and hyperacute sensitivity to moving stimuli [4], are structurally distinct from the principal eyes, which have the best spatial acuity known

How does a viviparous semifossorial lizard reproduce? Ophiodes intermedius (Squamata: Anguidae) from subtropical climate in the Wet Chaco region of Argentina.

The best predictors of reproductive patterns are commonly associated with climate factors, but evolutionary history also plays an important role. The semifossorial and viviparous lizard Ophiodes intermedius from the Wet Chaco region of Argentina showed an annual cycle with asynchrony between males and females and an unusual pattern for subtropical climates, with vitellogenesis beginning in autumn, ovulation and copulation in spring, and births occurring in summer. Males exhibited annual variation of testicular size associated with spermatogenic activity, reaching their maximum gonadal activity

Molecular and behavioral differentiation among Brazilian populations of Lutzomyia longipalpis (Diptera: Psychodidae: Phlebotominae).

BACKGROUND: Lutzomyia longipalpis is the primary vector of American visceral leishmaniasis. There is strong evidence that L. longipalpis is a species complex, but until recently the existence of sibling species among Brazilian populations was considered a controversial issue. In addition, there is still no consensus regarding the number of species occurring in this complex. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Using period, a gene that controls circadian rhythms and affects interpulse interval periodicity of the male courtship songs in Drosophila melanogaster and close relatives, we analyzed the m

Endocannabinoids mediate the effects of acute stress and corticosterone on sex behavior.

For animals in the wild, survival depends on being able to detect and respond rapidly to danger by switching from risky (e.g. conspicuous courtship) to survival-oriented behaviors. Very little is known about the hormonal or neuroendocrine mechanisms that control the rapid switch in behavioral state that occurs when an animal detects threats or other stressors. Prior studies with rough-skinned newts (Taricha granulosa), an amphibian model, found that stress-induced suppression of male sexual behaviors (amplectic clasping) involves corticosterone (CORT) and that this steroid hormone uses a novel

Hormone-driven mechanisms in the central nervous system facilitate the analysis of mammalian behaviours.

Hormonal effects on behaviours in animals and humans are now well enough understood for general statements about causal steps to be proposed. Facilitation or repression of a given behaviour by a given hormone can depend on the person's genetic and developmental history, on the temporal and spatial parameters of the hormone's administration, on the hormone's metabolism and on the specific receptor isoform available in a given neuron. The gene for oestrogen receptor-alpha is required for an entire chain of behaviours essential for reproduction, from courtship through maternal behaviours. In orde

Sexual Dimorphism in Fin Size and Shape in Bluefin Killifish.

Sexual dimorphism provides insight into how trait optima differ between males and females, despite their shared genome. Measuring sexual dimorphism can help identify which traits have been shaped by sexual selection. While fish morphology has been widely described, fewer studies have quantified sexual dimorphism across all fin types-pectoral, pelvic, dorsal, anal, and caudal. Fins are often overlooked due to their small size, tendency to fold against the body, and poor preservation post-collection. In this study, we quantified sexual dimorphism in fin size and shape across all fin types in the
