Comparison of cysticercus extract, cyst fluid and Taenia saginata extract for use in ELISA for serodiagnosis of neurocysticercosis.

Cysticercus cellulosae extract (CS), cyst fluid (CF), and an extract of Taenia saginata adult worm (TS) were evaluated for use in an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for serodiagnosis of human neurocysticercosis in Thai patients. ELISA sensitivity was found to be 78.13%, 81.25% and 62.50%, respectively. False positivity was 6.66% with CS and 0% with other antigens. CF gave positivity with a pooled visceral gnathostomiasis serum and 3 of 10 (30%) of angiostrongyliasis sera. CS produced weakly positive ELISA with pooled opisthorchiasis and visceral gnathostomiasis sera. TS gave weak pos

Circulating immune complexes in human breast cyst fluids: relationship with intracystic immunoglobulin and electrolyte levels.

Circulating immune complexes, the major classes of immunoglobulins and electrolyte concentrations were measured in sixty-two breast cyst fluids aspirated in women affected by gross cystic breast disease. Two main classes of cysts were defined according to the Na/K ratio. Appreciable levels of immunoglobulins were found in almost all samples examined; 66% of breast cyst fluids showed increased levels of immune complexes. A highly significant linear correlation between increased values of immune complexes and immunoglobulin M (p less than 0.001) was found in apocrine cysts, characterized by Na/K

Antigens and antibodies cross-reactive to the murine mammary tumor virus in human breast cyst fluids.

Human breast cyst fluids were shown to contain low concentrations of IgA (15-78 micrograms/ml) and IgG (33-145 micrograms/ml). The IgA:IgG ratios in individual breast cyst fluids ranged from 1:0.6 to 1:4. These levels are considerably higher than their ratio in serum (1:7). IgA from 33% of the 40 fluids examined, and IgG from 10% of the fluids, reacted with the murine mammary tumor virus (MuMTV). The reactivity was detected by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay that measures antibody binding to both the envelope glycoprotein and core protein of the virus. In a second series of experiments. [Evaluation of the Effect of Hydatid Cyst Fluid on the Apoptosis Pathway in BEAS-2B and A549 Cell Lines].

Some of the pathogenic microorganisms have been associated with cancer due to the activation of cancer precursors in the host because of the inflammatory processes. Additionally, some other pathogens prevents the tumor formation by creating an anti-neoplastic immune response which has been reported to stop the development of cancer. Cystic echinococcosis (CE) or cyst hydatid disease (CHD) is a zoonotic infection caused by the larval form of Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato in humans. It has been reported that there is a negative correlation between E.granulosus infection and cancer and it ha

Influence of hormonal status of patients with cystic disease on the composition of cyst fluid and breast cancer risk.

The relationship between the composition of breast cyst fluid (BCF), the menstrual status and in addition some endocrine events in the history of patients (n = 131) with gross cystic breast disease was investigated. The dehydroepiandrosterone (DHA) levels in type II (K+/Na+ < 1) cysts of the follicular group were significantly higher compared to the type II cysts of the luteal or postmenopausal groups. For testosterone a significant difference existed between the type I (K+/Na+ > or = 1) follicular and type I postmenopausal groups. Estrone levels were significantly higher in type I BCF of pati

A high-affinity folate binding protein in fluid of benign cysts of human liver and mammary gland.

The presence of a folate binding protein in fluid of benign cysts of human liver and mammary gland was demonstrated. Radioligand binding was of a high-affinity type (K approximately 10(10) M -1). The gel filtration profile of cystic fluid contained two peaks of radiolabelled folate, a large one of 25 kDa and a small one of 100 kDa. The concentration of radioligand bound protein in samples of cystic fluid ranged from nil to 6 nM. In most cases the protein immunoreacted with antibodies against human milk folate binding protein. The data suggest that fluid of human liver and mammary gland cysts c

Evidence for a potent lipid secretagogue in the cyst fluids of patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease.

Transepithelial fluid secretion appears to be an important factor in the progressive enlargement of cysts in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease. Evidence indicates that the fluid within cysts harbors an autocrine, paracrine, or endocrine secretagogue with the capacity to modulate the rate of cyst expansion. Fluids from five patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease were studied to determine the chemical nature and the physiologic function of the putative secretagogue. The secretory activity of cyst fluid assayed with polarized monolayers of Madin Darby canine kidney

The concentration of 16x-hydroxy androgens in serum and cyst fluid of women with gross cystic disease of the breast.

The concentrations of 16 alpha-hydroxydehydroepi-androsterone sulfate (16 alpha-OHDHAS) and androst-5-ene-3 beta, 16 alpha-, 17 beta-triol-3-sulfate (A-TriolS) were measured in the plasma and breast cyst fluid (BCF) of women with gross cystic disease of the breast. In the 19 BCF samples analyzed, the 16 alpha-OHDHAS and A-TriolS concentrations ranged from 15 to 1130 ng/mL, and 12 to 871 ng/mL, respectively. However the concentrations of these steroids in the sera of these women were lower (15-179 ng/mL, 8-80 ng/mL, respectively). Estriol-3-sulfate (E3-3S) concentrations in the BCF samples rang

Correlation of concentrations of estriol-3-sulfate with those of potassium and sodium in human breast cyst fluid.

Estriol-3-sulfate (E3-3S) was assayed in 92 specimens of human breast cyst fluid (BCF) obtained by needle aspiration from women with fibrocystic disease. The concentrations of K+ and Na+ were determined in the same samples. The median concentration of E3-3S in the fluids from premenopausal women under 51 years of age (69 cases) was 4.4 ng/mL. Based on the K+ levels the samples were divided into two groups, above 50 mM (Type I) and below 50 mM (Type II). Correlations were made between the concentrations of the estrogen conjugate and the univalent ions. In the premenopausal women, Type I cysts w

Cyst fluid levels of carcinoembryonic antigen, carbohydrate antigen 19-9, squamous cell carcinoma antigen, and amylase in thyroglossal duct and branchial cleft cysts.

Cyst fluid was aspirated from five thyroglossal duct cysts (TDCs) and four branchial cleft cysts (BCCs). The cyst fluid levels of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), carbohydrate antigen (CA) 19-9, squamous cell carcinoma antigen (SCC), and amylase were measured and compared between the two types of cyst. The enzyme immunoassay technique was used for CEA and CA19-9, while SCC and amylase levels were measured by the immunoradiometric assay and nitrophenol method, respectively. Immunostaining for CEA, CA19-9, and amylase was also performed. The serum levels of these markers in both groups of patient

Effects of Hydatid Cyst Fluid on Inflammation and Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition in Colorectal Adenocarcinoma (Caco-2) Cell Line.

PURPOSE: Anti-tumor immune responses and certain pathogens can exhibit various effects, including signals that reduce the risk of tumor formation or lead to cancer regression. Multiple studies have reported that infectious agents and the products of a wide range of host structures can modulate cancer development and growth positively or negatively and regulate the activation of immune responses. Numerous studies have reported that the parasite Echinococcus granulosus may have anti-cancer or carcinogenic effects on cancer cell proliferation in various cell cultures and animal models. Considerations to Prevent Intraoperative Fluid Spillage Into the Airway From a Bronchogenic Cyst During Anesthesia: A Case Report.

In patients with bronchogenic cysts, spillage of cyst contents into the airway during anesthesia and surgery has been reported. Methods to prevent this complication are not definitive. A 21-year-old man with a large bronchogenic cyst was scheduled for cyst excision during which large quantities of purulent fluid spilled into the airway immediately after induction of anesthesia. This was due to unmasking of the existing communication between the cyst and the bronchial tree. Preoperative percutaneous drainage of the cyst contents, awake intubation, and lung isolation with a bronchial blocker bef

A case of presumably Rathke's cleft cyst associated with postoperative cerebrospinal fluid leakage through persisting embryonal infundibular recess.

Persisting embryonal infundibular recess (PEIR) is a rare anomaly of the third ventricular floor. Only eight cases have been published. In this report, a case of presumably Rathke's cleft cyst associated with cerebrospinal fluid leakage caused by PEIR is described. An 81-year-old woman underwent endoscopic transsphenoidal surgery for the intra- and supra-sellar cystic lesion. Intraoperatively a hole was confirmed over the sella turcica connecting the sellar cyst and the infundibular recess. Liquorrhea did not occur throughout the procedure. A computed tomography (CT) scan obtained immediately

Symptomatic suprasellar endodermal cyst, possibly originating from the Seessel's pouch, containing fluid with a high carcinoembryonic antigen level.

A 32-year-old man presented with a rapidly progressive decrease in visual acuity and diplopia. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a suprasellar cystic mass extending to the upper part of the clivus. The content of this cyst showed a slightly higher signal intensity than that of his cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) on T1-weighted images. The cyst stretched the pituitary stalk, but a normal pituitary signal was observed. The cyst wall was maximally resected under neuroendoscopy, which yielded fluid contents that were white and mucous like, with a carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) level 1,400 ng/ml

Apolipoprotein D is the major protein component in cyst fluid from women with human breast gross cystic disease.

GCDFP(gross-cystic-disease-fluid protein)-24, a progesterone-binding protein present in large amounts in cyst fluid from human breast gross cystic disease, was purified in a one-step procedure by size-exclusion h.p.l.c. Peptide fragments obtained by trypsin digestion of the intact protein were purified by reverse-phase h.p.l.c. and analysed for their amino acid composition and subjected to automated Edman degradation. A search of the National Biomedical Research Foundation Data Bank revealed that all the sequenced tryptic peptides from protein GCDFP-24 matched perfectly with regions present in

[An immunohistochemical study of normal sweat glands using an antibody to the breast cyst fluid protein (GCDFP-15)].

In this study, we applied the antibody against the molecular weight 15,000 protein purified from breast cyst fluid (GCDFP-15) to cutaneous tissue, especially to sweat glands. Breast cyst fluid was obtained by needle aspiration from patients with gross cystic disease. DEAE-cellulose column chromatography was performed and followed by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Antisera against the purified protein were prepared in rabbits. We stained specimens of normal skin by the PAP method. The normal apocrine gland cells were strong positive and eccrine gland dark cells were positive. Eccrine g

Protective effects of hydatid cyst fluid on inflammation and tissue damage in rat model of type 1 diabetes.

Cystic echinococcosis, caused by Echinococcus granulosus, is a zoonotic disease with immunomodulatory properties attributed to hydatid cyst fluid (HCF). Given the immune-modulating and anti-inflammatory properties of HCF observed in other contexts, its potential therapeutic effects in diabetes remain unexplored. This study aimed to investigate the potential therapeutic effects of HCF on glycemic control, inflammatory cytokines, and tissue histopathology in a streptozotocin (STZ)-induced model of type 1 diabetes. Twenty male rats were randomly divided into four groups (n = 5): a healthy control
