Silver ions increase plasma membrane permeability through modulation of intracellular calcium levels in tobacco BY-2 cells.

Silver ions increase plasma membrane permeability for water and small organic compounds through their stimulatory effect on plasma membrane calcium channels, with subsequent modulation of intracellular calcium levels and ion homeostasis. The action of silver ions at the plant plasma membrane is largely connected with the inhibition of ethylene signalling thanks to the ability of silver ion to replace the copper cofactor in the ethylene receptor. A link coupling the action of silver ions and cellular auxin efflux has been suggested earlier by their possible direct interaction with auxin efflux

HSP90 acts as a senomorphic target in senescent retinal pigmental epithelial cells.

The senescence of retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells is associated with age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a leading cause of blindness in the world. HSP90 is a predominant chaperone that regulates cellular homeostasis under divergent physio-pathological conditions including senescence. However, the role of HSP90 in senescent RPE cells still remains unclear. Here, we reported that HSP90 acts as a senomorphic target of senescent RPE cells in vitro. Using H2O2-induced senescent ARPE-19 cells and replicative senescent primary RPE cells from rhesus monkey, we found that HSP90 upregulates

Redox regulation of plant hormone signaling transduction.

Plants need to precisely coordinate growth and development with stress responses under constantly changing environmental conditions, and the interaction between redox signaling and plant hormone signaling is an important regulatory mechanism underlying this balance. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are not only oxidative metabolic products generated under stress conditions, but also important second messengers that modulate protein functions through oxidative post-translational modifications (oxi-PTMs). Recent studies have shown that ROS can directly regulate plant hormone signaling transduction

Honeybee pollination enhances pollen germination, pollen tube growth, phytohormone responses and gene expression in pear pistils.

BACKGROUND: Honeybee pollination significantly enhances the yield of pear (Pyrus spp.), yet the early physiological mechanisms of pollination and fertilization remain underexplored. In this study, pollen germination, pollen tube growth, and ovule development were analyzed, along with the phytohormones in pistil and the gene expression associated with phytohormone biosynthetic and signal transduction pathways to the differential mechanisms after honeybee and artificial pollination. RESULTS: The results demonstrated that, compared to artificial pollination, honeybee pollination induced more eff

Effects of plant growth regulator treatments on quality-related traits and the establishment of cultivar-specific cultivation conditions in small- and medium-sized lily bulbs.

High-quality lilies with multiple flower buds are in demand for export, but small- and medium-sized bulbs often produce fewer buds, prompting the need for improved cultivation strategies. In this study, the effects of pre-planting plant growth regulator treatments on cut flower quality (flower bud number and length, plant height, and bulb circumference) in small- and medium-sized lily bulbs (14-16 cm) were investigated. Six lily cultivars ('Aubisque,' 'Difference,' 'Ducati,' 'Spring City,' 'Sweet Zanica,' and 'Woori Tower'), representing three lineages, were treated with 6-benzylaminopurine (B

Phytohormone-Mediated Regulation of Plant Cold Stress Tolerance: Signaling, Hormonal Crosstalk, and Translational Perspectives.

Cold stress (CS) represents a major environmental factor that adversely affects plant growth, development, and productivity. To cope with low-temperature conditions, plants have evolved sophisticated mechanisms for CS perception and response, mediated through complex cellular signaling networks and physiological processes. Central to these adaptive responses are phytohormones, which function either independently or through synergistic and antagonistic interactions to fine-tune CS tolerance. This review synthesizes current knowledge on the roles of major classical phytohormones and signaling me

The Spotted Lanternfly Contains High Concentrations of Plant Hormones in its Salivary Glands: Implications in Host Plant Interactions.

The spotted lanternfly (SLF), Lycorma delicatula is an invasive species in the United States that has emerged as a significant pest in vineyards. This polyphagous insect causes significant damage to grapevines and tree of heaven (TOH). SLF feeds voraciously on plant tissues using its piercing and sucking mouthparts through which it injects saliva and uptakes plant sap. Despite its impact, research on fundamental mechanisms mediating SLF interactions with their predominant hosts is limited. This study documents the morphology of salivary glands and quantifies plant hormones in salivary glands o

The Response of Hormones, Reactive Oxygen Species and Nitric Oxide in the Polyethylene-Glycol-Promoted, Salt-Alkali-Stress-Induced Embryo Germination of Sorbus pohuashanensis.

Polyethylene glycol can abrogate plant seed dormancy and alleviate salt-alkali stress damage to plants, but its role in embryonic dormancy abrogation and germination in Sorbus pohuashanensis is not yet clear. The mechanism by which polyethylene glycol promotes the release of embryonic dormancy may be related to the synthesis and metabolism of endogenous hormones, reactive oxygen species and reactive nitrogen. In this article, germination in indoor culture dishes was used, and the most suitable conditions for treating S. pohuashanensis embryos, with polyethylene glycol (PEG) and sodium carbonat

Expression dynamics indicate the role of Jasmonic acid biosynthesis pathway in regulating macronutrient (N, P and K+) deficiency tolerance in rice (Oryza sativa L.).

Expression pattern indicates that JA biosynthesis pathway via regulating JA levels might control root system architecture to improve nutrient use efficiency (NUE) and N, P, K+ deficiency tolerance in rice. Deficiencies of macronutrients (N, P and K+) and consequent excessive use of fertilizers have dramatically reduced soil fertility. It calls for development of nutrient use efficient plants. Plants combat nutrient deficiencies by altering their root system architecture (RSA) to enhance the acquisition of nutrients from the soil. Amongst various phytohormones, Jasmonic acid (JA) is known to re

Comparing and Contrasting the Multiple Roles of Butenolide Plant Growth Regulators: Strigolactones and Karrikins in Plant Development and Adaptation to Abiotic Stresses.

Strigolactones (SLs) and karrikins (KARs) are both butenolide molecules that play essential roles in plant growth and development. SLs are phytohormones, with SLs having known functions within the plant they are produced in, while KARs are found in smoke emitted from burning plant matter and affect seeds and seedlings in areas of wildfire. It has been suggested that SL and KAR signaling may share similar mechanisms. The α/β hydrolases DWARF14 (D14) and KARRIKIN INSENSITIVE 2 (KAI2), which act as receptors of SL and KAR, respectively, both interact with the F-box protein MORE AXILLARY GROWTH 2

Characterization of a novel putative zinc finger gene MIF1: involvement in multiple hormonal regulation of Arabidopsis development.

Phytohormones play crucial roles in regulating many aspects of plant development. Although much has been learned about the effects of individual hormones, cross-talk between and integration of different hormonal signals are still not well understood. We present a study of MINI ZINC FINGER 1 (MIF1), a putative zinc finger protein from Arabidopsis, and suggest that it may be involved in integrating signals from multiple hormones. MIF1 homologs are highly conserved among seed plants, each characterized by a very short sequence containing a central putative zinc finger domain. Constitutive overexp

Developmental and pathogen-induced activation of an msr gene, str 246C, from tobacco involves multiple regulatory elements.

A family of genes, the so-called msr genes (multiple stimulus response), has recently been identified on the basis of sequence homology in various plant species. Members of this gene family are thought to be regulated by a number of environmental or developmental stimuli, although it is not known whether any one member responds more specifically to one stimulus, or whether each gene member responds to various environmental stimuli. In this report, we address this question by studying the tobacco msr gene str246C. Using transgenic tobacco plants containing 2.1 kb of 5' flanking DNA sequence fro

Preharvest CPPU Application Improves Litchi Fruit Storability via Modification of Hormone Profiles and Maintenance of Recalcitrant Seed Vigor.

Litchi (Litchi chinensis Sonn.), an important fruit in south China, rapidly loses commercial value within 3-4 days at ambient temperatures due to poor storability. Previous studies have shown that 5 mg L-1 CPPU (N-(2-chloro-4-pyridyl)-N'-phenylurea) application can improve postharvest storage of litchi fruit. In this study, we investigated the improved storability of litchi fruit by CPPU application from the perspectives of fruit maturity and seed vigor. Litchi fruit on the tree were treated with CPPU 2 weeks before commercial maturation. Fourteen days after CPPU application, the treated fruit

Rol-Transformed Kalanchoë Shows Altered Root Allocation and Photosynthetic Responses to Nitrogen Deficiency.

Ri/rol transformation by Rhizobium rhizogenes is well known to alter plant architecture, including shoot compactness, branching and root development. However, its significance for plant responses to nitrogen limitation remains unclear. Here, we investigated developmental, physiological and hormonal responses of an interspecific Kalanchoë laciniata × K. blossfeldiana hybrid to nitrogen deficiency using complementary pot and hydroponic experiments. Nitrogen deficiency strongly reduced leaf area and total biomass in both wild-type (WT) and rol-transformed (Rol) plants. Nevertheless, rol transform

Early humic acid-induced eustress triggers biostimulant responses in Arabidopsis thaliana: RBOHC-derived H2O2 drives growth promotion while RBOHD enables nutritional reprogramming.

Root-applied humic acids (HAs) promote plant development, yet the early signaling mechanisms underlying their biostimulant action remain incompletely understood. Here, we show that treatment of Arabidopsis thaliana roots with a sedimentary humic acid (SHA) triggers a transient eustress-like response, characterized by early inhibition of shoot and root growth and increased H2O2 accumulation in root hairs and apical roots. This initial oxidative phase was followed by enhanced shoot and root growth, supporting the view that SHA acts as an adaptive plant modulator through a controlled stress-relat

Cross-kingdom signaling manipulation by insect-associated microbial symbionts: Linking molecular mechanisms to pest management strategies.

Microbial symbionts associated with herbivorous insects can modulate plant hormone networks and reconfigure induced defenses during feeding. This review synthesizes current knowledge on how symbiont effectors converge on conserved jasmonic acid (JA)/salicylic acid (SA)/ethylene (ET) signaling hubs to suppress or reprogram plant immunity. These microbial partners secrete a diverse arsenal of bioactive molecules, including effector proteins (e.g., the histidine-rich Ca2+-binding protein ApHRC from Serratia symbiotica in pea aphids), enzymes (e.g., gut microbiome-derived proteases in Anticarsia g

Nitric oxide and redox signaling networks governing plant stem cell homeostasis.

Sustained plant growth depends on stem cell populations in the shoot and root apical meristems (SAM and RAM), where coordinated regulation of self-renewal, proliferation, quiescence, and differentiation support continuous organ formation. Nitric oxide (NO) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) constitute an interconnected redox signaling system that links metabolism and environmental perception with stem cell regulation. Their spatial and temporal dynamics establish distinct redox environments within meristems, contributing to the organization of proliferative and differentiation domains. In RAM,

Comprehensive Analysis of Boron-Induced Changes in Cell Expansion and Phytohormone During Early Ovary Development in Pear (Pyrus sinkiangensis Yu).

Boron exerts regulatory control over various aspects of plant growth and morphogenesis, and the application of boron prior to anthesis has been recognized as a critical agronomic practice. However, the regulatory mechanisms by which boron influences fruit set and early ovary development in pear remain to be elucidated. In this study, boron application was used at three stages, including pre-flowering, full-flowering, and early fruiting in the 'Kuerle Xiangli' (Pyrus sinkiangensis Yu), with a focus on cell expansion and endogenous phytohormone. As a result, treatment with 0.3% boric acid signif
