Structural Relationships between Asthma and Dental Caries in Children: A Birth Cohort Study in Southern Brazil.

INTRODUCTION: There is an inconclusive causal association between asthma symptoms and dental caries in the primary dentition. This study aimed to investigate, using SEM (structural equation modeling), a possible causal relation between asthma and dental caries in the primary dentition. METHODS: Using data from the 2004 Pelotas Birth Cohort Study, a sub-sample of 1,303 individuals was selected. Dental caries was clinically evaluated at 5 years old based on decayed, missing, and filled tooth (dmft) index criteria. Asthma-related symptoms (wheezing and shortness of breath) at 1- and 4-year-olds

The Dental Aesthetic Index and Its Association with Dental Caries, Dental Plaque and Socio-Demographic Variables in Schoolchildren Aged 12 and 15 Years.

The Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI) was determined in 12- and 15-year-old schoolchildren to ascertain the prevalence of malocclusion and to assess its association with dental caries experience, dental plaque accumulation, and socio-demographic variables. We performed a cross-sectional study with a stratified two-stage sampling design. An oral health survey and oral examination were conducted, and socio-demographic data were recorded. The sample comprised 1453 schoolchildren aged 12 (868) and 15 (585). These two samples were analyzed separately because statistically significant differences were fo

The Oral Health Situation of 12-Year-Old School Children in the Rural Region of Ilembula in Southwestern Tanzania: A Cross-Sectional Study.

There has been no research on the prevalence of and factors associated with dental caries in rural southwestern Tanzania among schoolchildren. Determining the prevalence of and factors associated with dental caries will help to assess the need for dental intervention and prophylactic measures among children in the region. In February 2020, a cross-sectional study was conducted in the Wanging'ombe District of the Ilembula Ward. The data were collected through clinical examinations and personal interviews at two primary schools. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were per

Data were collected by questionnaires and clinical and radiological examinations among 1067 recruits in 1988. 23.7% of all recruits had no decayed teeth. The average DMFT score was 12.1 (SD = 4.69) and the number of decayed surfaces was 4.1 (SD = 5.97), 46.1% of all recruits had visited the dentist during the last year. The clinical findings (except x-ray scores) were compared with findings from similar studies in 1968 and 1978. The results showed that the dental health improved fro

Use of dental floss by Finnish students.

In order to elucidate dental care behavior related to interdental cleaning, a group of first-year students were invited to a free dental examination. 186 of the students invited (76%) were examined clinically and roentgenologically. The mean DMFS-index of the students was 22.6 (+/- 12.6). They were also asked about their use of dental floss. 35% of the students reported using dental floss, but only 2% reported daily usage. 45% of the students had been taught how to use dental floss, and 83% of these had been taught by dental personnel. Teaching had no effect on the reported frequency of use. T

Identification of caries-active individuals in longitudinal data a methodological study using a national registry.

OBJECTIVE: The aim was to identify caries active individuals among adults by using a trajectory model of longitudinal data from the Swedish national registry (SKaPa) and comparing them with published data from the Dunedin cohort. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data from two different age groups (30- and 40-year-olds) followed for 10 years were retrieved from SKaPa and were compared with published longitudinal birth-cohort data from the Dunedin study. Using the trajectory model, the subjects were divided into three different trajectories according to their caries development over time (i.e. high, 15%;

Adverse birth outcomes and childhood caries: a cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between adverse birth outcomes and dental caries in primary teeth. METHODS: This study included children in Khon Kaen, Thailand, who participated in the Prospective Cohort Study of Thai Children. Preterm was defined as a birth at <37 weeks gestation, low birthweight (LBW) as birthweight <2500 g, and small-for-gestational age (SGA) as birthweight <10th percentile of expected weight for gestational age. Two calibrated dentists measured dental caries in primary teeth when the children were 3-4 years old using decayed, missing and filled surfaces (dmfs) inde

Dental health of aboriginal pre-school children in Brisbane, Australia.

This investigation studied the dental health status of a group of 184 Australian Aboriginal children with a mean age of 4.4 +/- 0.8 years, who were attending pre-schools in metropolitan Brisbane, a non-fluoridated state capital city. The DDE (Developmental Defects of Enamel) Index was used to chart enamel hypoplasia and enamel opacities. WHO criteria was used to diagnose dental caries. The results showed that 98% of children had at least one tooth showing developmental enamel defects. Each child had a mean of 3.8 +/- 1.7 teeth affected by enamel hypoplasia and another 1.1 +/- 0.8 teeth affecte

[Oral manifestations in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus].

Forty-six patients with systemic lupus erythematosus underwent thorough dental examination to determine the frequency and severity of oral lesions and periodontal diseases. According to clinical criteria, disease was classified as severe (n = 26) or less severe (n = 20). The overall rate of mucosal involvement in the studied patients was 48%-from 54% in patients with severe disease, 40% in those with less severe disease. Patients with severe disease were found to have a higher rate of tooth loss and an increased rate of gingival inflammation. The severity of periodontal lesions correlated with
