The utility of fetal heart rate deceleration's descending slope in searching for a non-National Institute of Child Health and Human Development parameter for the detection of fetal acidosis.

OBJECTIVE: To identify new parameters predicting fetal acidemia. METHODS: A retrospective case-control study in a cohort of deliveries from a tertiary referral hospital-based cohort deliveries in Zaragoza, Spain between 2018 and 2021 was performed. To predict fetal acidemia, the NICHD categorizations and non-NICHD parameters were analyzed in the electronic fetal monitoring (EFM). Those included total reperfusion time, total deceleration area and the slope of the descending limb of the fetal heart rate of the last deceleration curve. The accuracy of the parameters was evaluated using the speci

Carbonic anhydrases reduce the acidity of the tumor microenvironment, promote immune infiltration, decelerate tumor growth, and improve survival in ErbB2/HER2-enriched breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Carbonic anhydrases catalyze CO2/HCO3- buffer reactions with implications for effective H+ mobility, pH dynamics, and cellular acid-base sensing. Yet, the integrated consequences of carbonic anhydrases for cancer and stromal cell functions, their interactions, and patient prognosis are not yet clear. METHODS: We combine (a) bioinformatic analyses of human proteomic data and bulk and single-cell transcriptomic data coupled to clinicopathologic and prognostic information; (b) ex vivo experimental studies of gene expression in breast tissue based on quantitative reverse transcription

Lower, Variable Intrathecal Opioid Doses, and the Incidence of Prolonged Fetal Heart Rate Decelerations After Combined Spinal Epidural Analgesia for Labor: A Quality Improvement Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Combined spinal-epidurals with low-dose intrathecal opioids and local anesthetics are commonly used to initiate labor analgesia due to the fast onset of analgesia and good patient satisfaction. Intrathecal fentanyl has been associated with fetal bradycardia, and the rate may be higher at doses of 25 mcg and above. As such, our institution limits intrathecal fentanyl doses to less than 15 mcg for labor. Prompted by a few incidents of prolonged fetal bradycardia at even these low doses, we sought to audit the side effects associated with varying low doses of intrathecal fentanyl. ME

Cardiac autonomic function score: a novel risk stratification tool in the cardiac intensive care unit based on periodic repolarization dynamics and deceleration capacity of heart rate (LMU-eICU study).

AIMS: Treatment capacities on intensive care units (ICUs) are a limited resource reserved for high-risk patients. To facilitate risk stratification of ICU patients, several scoring systems have been developed over time. Among them, the Simplified Acute Physiology Score 3 (SAPS3) is the gold standard, but lacks specificity for cardiac ICU patients. Here, we propose a novel, fully automated, electrocardiogram-based cardiac autonomic risk stratification score (CAFICU) that substantially adds to current risk stratification strategies. METHODS AND RESULTS: CAFICU is based on periodic repolarizatio

Novel α-amylolyzates derived from enzymatically synthesized α-glucans using diverse glycogen branching enzymes decelerate glucose release by modulation of intestinal α-glucosidases.

In this study, the internal branched structure of highly branched α-glucans (HBαGs) was regulated by employing glycogen branching enzymes (GBEs) from different microbial sources and amylosucrase, with the purpose of synthesizing structurally diverse α-amylolyzates. Variations in GBE origin resulted in HBαGs with distinct fine structural features, including differences in α-1,6 branching degree and molecular weight. Following hydrolysis with Aspergillus oryzae α-amylase, the resulting α-amylolyzates exhibited a high degree of branching (from 26.6 to 30.9%) and large molecular weight (1.07 × 106

Effect of knee flexion angle on ground reaction forces, knee moments and muscle co-contraction during an impact-like deceleration landing: implications for the non-contact mechanism of ACL injury.

Investigating landing kinetics and neuromuscular control strategies during rapid deceleration movements is a prerequisite to understanding the non-contact mechanism of ACL injury. The purpose of this study was to quantify the effect of knee flexion angle on ground reaction forces, net knee joint moments, muscle co-contraction and lower extremity muscles during an impact-like, deceleration task. Ground reaction forces and knee joint moments were determined from video and force plate records of 10 healthy male subjects performing rapid deceleration single leg landings from a 10.5 cm height with

Tumor Decelerating and Chemo-Potentiating Action of Methyl Jasmonate on a T Cell Lymphoma In Vivo: Role of Altered Regulation of Metabolism, Cell Survival, Drug Resistance, and Intratumoral Blood Flow.

Methyl jasmonate (MJ), a natural oxylipin, possesses a broad spectrum of antineoplastic potential in vitro. However, its tumor growth impeding and chemo-potentiating action has not been adequately investigated in vivo. Using a murine thymus-derived tumor named Dalton's Lymphoma (DL), in the present study, we examined if intra-tumoral administration of MJ can cause tumor growth impedance. We also explored the associated molecular mechanisms governing cell survival, carbohydrate & lipid metabolism, chemo-potentiation, and angiogenesis. MJ administration to tumor-transplanted mice caused decelera

BMS-202, a PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitor, decelerates the pro-fibrotic effects of fibroblasts derived from scar tissues via ERK and TGFβ1/Smad signaling pathways.

INTRODUCTION: Hypertrophic scar (HS), a fibroproliferative disorder of the skin with some tumor-like properties, is closely related to dysregulated inflammation. PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitor is a promising medication for cancer therapy as its potent functions on adaptive immune response; whether it could be a candidate for HS therapy has aroused our interest. This study aimed to explore the effect and the mechanism of BMS-202, a PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitor, in HS. METHODS: Ten HS and adjacent normal skin tissues collected from HS patients were used to detect α-SMA, collagen I, and PD-L1 expression by Quanti

Endometriosis-derived exosomal MicroRNA-125b-5p downregulates phosphatidylinositol 3-Kinase/Protein Kinase B signaling pathways via vascular endothelial growth factor to decelerate endometriosis progression.

BACKGROUND: Endometriosis (EMs) is a chronic enigmatic gynecological disorder which pathogenesis have not been fully elucidated. Exosomes have been proven to participate in endometriosis. However, the role of exosomes in the pathogenesis of EMs remains poorly defined. METHODS: Exosomes were isolated from cyst fluid of EMs patients and pelvic fluid of non-EMs patients, and characterized by transmission electron microscopy, nanoparticle tracking analysis and western blot. Exosomal miRNAs were performed by small RNA sequencing. Q-PCR and cell function were performed to identify the relationship

2025 Basic Science Neer Award Winner: The impact of posterior and posterior superior labral injuries and the effect of their treatment on glenohumeral kinematics in the deceleration and follow-through phase of throwing: a biomechanical study.

BACKGROUND: Combined posterior and posterior-superior (PPS) injuries (6:30-12:00; right shoulder) have a much higher incidence than isolated superior labral anterior to posterior (SLAP) injuries (11:00-1:00; right shoulder). However, it is unclear how PPS injuries affect glenohumeral (GH) biomechanics and how they should be treated. This study evaluated if (1) PPS injuries alter GH kinematics and joint characteristics, (2) standard repair techniques restore GH kinematics and contact characteristics toward their intact state, and (3) there are differences between repair techniques. Therapeutic Treatment of Superoxide Dismutase 1 (G93A) Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Model Mice with Medical Ozone Decelerates Trigeminal Motor Neuron Degeneration, Attenuates Microglial Proliferation, and Preserves Monocyte Levels in Mesenteric Lymph Nodes.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is an incurable and lethal neurodegenerative disease in which progressive motor neuron loss and associated inflammation represent major pathology hallmarks. Both the prevention of neuronal loss and neuro-destructive inflammation are still unmet challenges. Medical ozone, an ozonized oxygen mixture (O3/O2), has been shown to elicit profound immunomodulatory effects in peripheral organs, and beneficial effects in the aging brain. We investigated, in a preclinical drug testing approach, the therapeutic potential of a five-day O3/O2i.p. treatment regime at the b

Comparison of transthoracic Doppler echocardiography and natriuretic peptides in predicting mean pulmonary capillary wedge pressure in patients with chronic atrial fibrillation.

The purpose of this study was to assess whether transthoracic Doppler echocardiography and serum natriuretic peptide levels could predict mean pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (PCWP) in patients with chronic atrial fibrillation. We examined mitral flow velocity and pulmonary venous flow (PVF) velocity patterns in 32 patients with chronic atrial fibrillation. Plasma A-type and B-type natriuretic peptide (ANP, BNP, respectively) levels in the peripheral vein were measured. Significant correlations were observed between mean PCWP and the following: peak velocity (r = 0.51) and deceleration time

Mechanism of development of aortic transection: a possible new angle.

Aortic transection injury is a frequently fatal injury secondary to sudden deceleration. To date magnitude of deceleration is the only factor known to influence the development of an aortic transection injury. We hypothesise that different 3D geometries of the aortic arch in healthy young adult patients as a possible predisposing factor for transection injuries when undergoing sudden deceleration. We extend this to hypothesise that the direction of deceleration may be important as well. In addition we hypothesise that the stage in the cardiac cycle, which determines central aortic blood pressu

A multimodal deep learning-based algorithm for specific fetal heart rate events detection.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to develop a multimodal deep learning-based algorithm for detecting specific fetal heart rate (FHR) events, to enhance automatic monitoring and intelligent assessment of fetal well-being. METHODS: We analyzed FHR and uterine contraction signals by combining various feature extraction techniques, including morphological features, heart rate variability features, and nonlinear domain features, with deep learning algorithms. This approach enabled us to classify four specific FHR events (bradycardia, tachycardia, acceleration, and deceleration) as well as four distinct

Perturbation in public transport as a basic concept for perturbation-based balance training for fall prevention.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of the study was to collect real-world sensor data on acceleration and deceleration while riding a bus or tram. With respect to the risk of suffering fall-related injuries while using public transportation, our interest was to understand the amplitude of real-world perturbations to translate them to innovative reactive balance training programs. METHODS: Acceleration and deceleration data were collected during 12 days in buses and trams in a German city. A sensor, which was fixed to a vertical bar in the vehicle, measured the acceleration signals. Additionally, extreme v

Evaluation of left ventricular diastolic function from the pattern of left ventricular filling.

The pattern of left ventricular (LV) filling can be determined by Doppler echocardiography. Normally most LV filling occurs early in diastole, with some additional filling occurring during atrial systole, late in diastole. In the absence of mitral stenosis, three patterns of LV filling indicate progressively greater diastolic dysfunction: (1) Reduced early diastolic filling with a compensatory increase in importance of atrial filling, termed a pattern of "impaired relaxation;" (2) "pseudo-normalization" with most filling early in diastole but with rapid deceleration of mitral flow; and (3) "re

[The clinical importance of abnormal heart rate tracings during labour (author's transl)].

A continuous fetal heart rate tracing of the first and second stage of labour was available for 221 labours and deliveries with varying histories of the present pregnancy. The importance of the abnormalities of the fetal heart rate in these tracings was interpreted in comparison to the development of fetal acidosis. There were no cases of fetal acidosis when changes of the basal frequency occured as an isolated phenomenon independant of the oscillation type. Variable decelerations without silent oscillation of loss of oscillation at the low of the deceleration led to a slight increase of fetal

Evaluating short stature in children.

A child's growth reflects his or her general state of health. Growth deceleration therefore may result from processes that ultimately threaten much more than height and weight. Accurate height and weight measurements and routine plotting of growth data on standard growth charts are important elements of pediatric practice. A decrease in length of height percentiles may be physiologic in infancy and in puberty. However, in order to distinguish physiologic from pathologic growth deceleration, a careful history and physical examination needs to be obtained. Quite frequently, laboratory and radiog
