CardioXNet: Automated Detection for Cardiomegaly Based on Deep Learning.

In this paper, we present an automated procedure to determine the presence of cardiomegaly on chest X-ray image based on deep learning. The proposed algorithm CardioXNet uses deep learning methods U-NET and cardiothoracic ratio for diagnosis of cardiomegaly from chest X-rays. U-NET learns the segmentation task from the ground truth data. OpenCV is used to denoise and maintain the precision of region of interest once minor errors occur. Therefore, Cardiothoracic ratio (CTR) is calculated as a criterion to determine cardiomegaly from U-net segmentations. End-to-end Dense-Net neural network is us

Predicting Infectious Disease Using Deep Learning and Big Data.

Infectious disease occurs when a person is infected by a pathogen from another person or an animal. It is a problem that causes harm at both individual and macro scales. The Korea Center for Disease Control (KCDC) operates a surveillance system to minimize infectious disease contagions. However, in this system, it is difficult to immediately act against infectious disease because of missing and delayed reports. Moreover, infectious disease trends are not known, which means prediction is not easy. This study predicts infectious diseases by optimizing the parameters of deep learning algorithms w

Deep learning uncovers hidden power of low-affinity motifs.

Low-affinity transcription factor binding sites are functionally important but difficult to map and mechanistically poorly understood. In this issue of Cell Genomics, Weilert et al. leverage sequence-to-function deep learning models to systematically map low-affinity pioneer factor binding sites in mouse embryonic stem cells and reveal how these sites contribute to chromatin opening through soft-syntax nucleosomal cooperativity.

Uncertainty quantification for trustworthy deep learning: Methods and measures.

The deployment of deep neural networks in safety-critical domains demands reliable estimates of predictive confidence, yet conventional architectures lack principled uncertainty quantification. This survey provides a structured, critical review of methods for Uncertainty Quantification (UQ) in deep learning, scoped to ensemble-based and approximate Bayesian approaches and the measures used to summarize their outputs. Relative to existing UQ surveys, our contribution is depth on efficient ensemble approximations and single-pass methods, and a unified treatment that separates the method producin

Benchmarking Deep Learning Predictions of Mutation-Induced Fold Switching.

Many proteins are known to adopt multiple distinct folded states which are often associated with key functional behavior. A predictive understanding of the properties of such fold-switching or metamorphic proteins can provide insights into protein dynamics and energetics, and enable the design of complex protein functions and molecular machines. Recently developed deep learning modeling tools, including AlphaFold, have led to dramatic increases in accuracy for prediction of protein structures from sequence, but their performance for prediction of point mutant effects or fold switching is uncle

Morphology-guided deep learning for nanoparticle agglomeration diagnostic assays.

Accurate and rapid diagnostic tests that are simultaneously affordable remain elusive, typically due to trade-offs between performance and cost. Conventional nucleic acid tests offer high sensitivity but require complex, expensive steps such as amplification and purification, whereas lateral flow assays are simple and low-cost but lack the necessary sensitivity for many applications. New analytical approaches provide an opportunity to bridge this gap, raising sensitivity but not material expense. We present a miniaturized and simplified chip-based platform that combines three components into a

Determination of Fungiform Papilla Number Using Deep Learning Methods.

This study aimed to develop a deep learning-based method for the automatic detection and counting of fungiform papillae (FP) on the dorsal surface of the human tongue. FP density and morphology may serve as biomarkers for taste function and systemic disease diagnosis. Manual counting is time-consuming and subjective; therefore, an objective and reproducible artificial intelligence (AI) method was designed to provide a reliable quantitative assessment. A deeplearning object detection model was constructed using the Ultralytics YOLOv11 architecture. A dataset of 177 high-resolution toluidine blu

Deep learning methods for automated orthopaedic measurements in radiographs.

Radiography remains central to orthopedic diagnosis and surgical planning, yet many clinically important measurements (angles, offsets, alignment indices, and grading scores) are time-consuming to obtain and show intra- and inter-observer variability, especially in early or borderline disease. A reader-friendly overview of deep learning methods for the automation of orthopedic measurements on radiographs is provided in this article. Four common approaches are summarized: segmentation networks through which masks are generated and geometry-based measurements are derived; key point or heatmap-ba

Leveraging deep learning semantic segmentation for imaging coral skeletons.

Micro-computed tomography and semantic segmentation provide insights into the structural hierarchy of biomineralized tissues, as exemplified by stony coral skeletons. Non-destructive imaging reveals mechanistic aspects of skeletal growth, including variations in porosity, density, and skeletal thickness across species and in the context of disease. Recent developments in semantic segmentation based on convolutional neural network models are poised to transform the streamlined analysis of large 3D tomography datasets, surpassing the performance of traditional segmentation methods. A deep learning framework for efficient pathology image analysis.

Artificial intelligence has transformed digital pathology by enabling biomarker prediction from high-resolution whole-slide images. However, current methods are computationally inefficient, processing thousands of redundant tiles per slide and requiring complex aggregation models. We introduce EAGLE (Efficient Approach for Guided Local Examination), a deep learning framework that emulates pathologists by selectively analyzing informative regions. EAGLE combines task-agnostic tile selection with detailed feature extraction and is benchmarked against leading slide- and tile-level foundation mode

Bladder cancer segmentation using u-net-based deep-learning.

We are developing a decision support system for treatment response assessment of bladder cancer by analyzing patients' CT urography (CTU) examinations. Accurate segmentation of bladder lesions is a critical and challenging task. We previously developed a bladder cancer segmentation method using a deep learning convolutional neural network and level sets (DL-CNN + LS). In this study, we designed several deep learning models based on U-Net for bladder cancer segmentation and compared them with DL-CNN + LS and two transformer-based models developed for medical imaging - DATTNet and the Med-Segmen

Quantification of Craniofacial Growth Pattern Based on Deep Learning.

Background: Childhood and adolescence constitute a critical period for craniofacial growth. Understanding its developmental patterns is essential for clinical decision-making in orthodontics and maxillofacial surgery. Traditional cephalometric analysis relies on manual landmarking, which oversimplifies complex morphology and introduces subjectivity. Although deep learning, a key artificial intelligence (AI) technology, has demonstrated remarkable performance in image analysis and classification, most methods still depend on manual annotations during training, perpetuating subjectivity and limi

Deep learning reconstruction and ADC: is quantitative comparability preserved?

Deep learning (DL)-based reconstruction can improve image quality and acquisition efficiency in breast diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), but its effects on quantitative biomarkers warrant careful consideration. Although recent work reported improved image quality without significant differences in mean apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), statistical nonsignificance does not necessarily establish quantitative equivalence or interchangeability across reconstruction pipelines. Reconstruction related changes in noise characteristics, signal intensity, spatial resolution, and ADC distributions ma

AI-driven diagnosis of mpox using deep learning models.

Mpox lesions can resemble other dermatological conditions, motivating image-based screening, yet published studies remain difficult to compare owing to differences in dataset construction, augmentation policy, and evaluation design. This study provides a leakage-aware benchmark for binary mpox classification using a unified dataset assembled from MSLD v1.0 and v2.0. Seven pretrained backbones and a weighted ensemble were compared under group-stratified five-fold cross-validation with original-only test evaluation, validation-based threshold selection, and temperature scaling. Ancestral state reconstruction with discrete characters using deep learning.

Ancestral state reconstruction is a classical problem of broad relevance in phylogenetics. Likelihood-based methods for reconstructing ancestral states under discrete character models, such as Markov models, have proven extremely useful, but only work so long as the assumed model yields a tractable likelihood function. Unfortunately, extending a simple but tractable phylogenetic model to possess new, but biologically realistic, properties often results in an intractable likelihood, preventing its use in standard modeling tasks, including ancestral state reconstruction. The rapid advancement of
