Resistance of colostrum-deprived domestic lambs to infection with deer adenovirus.

Seven colostrum-deprived, 3-4-wk-old Rambouillet-Hampshire lambs were inoculated via the mucous membranes with deer adenovirus (DAdV) and monitored for clinical signs for 21 d post-inoculation at which time animals were euthanized and postmortem examinations were performed. Pre-inoculation and post-inoculation serum samples were tested for antibodies to DAdV, ovine adenovirus 7, bovine adenovirus 7, and goat adenovirus 1. Evidence for DAdV infection was determined by virus isolation, PCR tests, and histopathology with immunohistochemistry tests for DAdV. No clinical signs or lesions consistent

Insights into the Bidirectional Properties of the Sheep-Deer Prion Transmission Barrier.

The large chronic wasting disease (CWD)-affected cervid population in the USA and Canada, and the risk of the disease being transmitted to humans through intermediate species, is a highly worrying issue that is still poorly understood. In this case, recombinant protein misfolding cyclic amplification was used to determine, in vitro, the relevance of each individual amino acid on cross-species prion transmission. Others and we have found that the β2-α2 loop is a key modulator of transmission barriers between species and markedly influences infection by sheep scrapie, bovine spongiform encephalo

Prevalence of Leptospira spp. in the kidneys of wild boars and deer in Japan.

We surveyed the prevalence of Leptospira spp. from 2005 to 2008 in wild boars and deer in Japan using polymerase chain reaction. Leptospiral flaB was detected in the kidneys of wild boars (positive ratio, 15.2%; 22 of 145) from 9 prefectures and a deer (1.1%; 1 of 94) from 1 prefecture in Japan. There was no annual change in the prevalence of positive animals during the investigation period (chi-squared test, p=0.94) or in the prevalence in male and female wild boars in the 2007 to 2008 season (Fisher's exact test, P=0.45). The Leptospira species harbored by these animals were deduced to be L.

A paretic condition in an Anaplasma phagocytophilum infected roe deer calf.

This paper describes a case of Anaplasma phagocytophilum infection in a roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) calf in Norway. The calf was found deserted, paretic, and heavily infested with Ixodes ricinus ticks. It was euthanized and investigated postmortem. Anaplasma phagocytophilum was detected in several tissues by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and 16S rRNA sequence analyses. Analyses for Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato and tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus infections were negative. This is the first report of a possible paretic condition in A. phagocytophilum infected roe deer.

Presumptive gangrenous ergotism in free-living moose and a roe deer.

Presumptive gangrenous ergotism in 10 moose (Alces alces) and one roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) is reported. Three of the moose came from a municipality in southeastern Norway where the disease occurred as a cluster in 1996. The other moose represented solitary or sporadic cases diagnosed in four municipalities in northwestern Norway between 1996 and 2004. Affected moose (seven calves, three yearlings) were found between October and June, showing distal limb lesions on one to three limbs. The lesions in the moose found during October and November presented as dry gangrene, whereas moose found

Hair-loss syndrome in black-tailed deer of the Pacific Northwest.

A widespread hair-loss syndrome (HLS) has affected Columbian black-tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus columbianus) in western Oregon and Washington (USA) since 1996. In order to better characterize the condition, 21 HLS-affected black-tailed deer (BTD) were necropsied, and body condition, parasite burdens, and significant lesions were noted. All deer were in poor body condition, and at least 17 had severe internal parasite burdens. A consistent finding was the presence of large numbers of chewing lice, identified as an indeterminate species of Damalinia (Cervicola). Four animals were infested wi

Asymptomatic shedding of Cryptosporidium oocysts by red deer hinds and calves.

Levels of Cryptosporidium infection in a group of red deer were monitored over a period of 1 year. Faecal samples were examined on an approximate monthly basis from adult hinds and calves for the presence of Cryptosporidium oocysts. The water-ether sedimentation method followed by sucrose flotation and a monoclonal antibody identification procedure were used. It was found that apparently healthy adult deer were shedding low numbers of oocysts in their faeces throughout the year and that there appeared to be a periparturient increase in the numbers of oocysts shed. Samples taken from 6-month-ol

An occurrence of Salmonella typhimurium infection in sika deer (Cervus nippon).

Seven sika deer (Cervus nippon) in a herd of 30 deer in a park died. Upon examination of three dead deer, Salmonella Typhimurium was isolated from the organs and intestinal contents. Histopathological examination revealed catarrhal enteritis and focal necroses in the liver. Immunohistochemically, Salmonella antigen of O4 was detected in the enteric lesions. The case was diagnosed as S. Typhimurium infection in the sika deer. Because of the importance of Salmonella in public health, fecal and soil samples were continuously collected from the paddock. However, no Salmonella was isolated from any

Association of Moraxella ovis with keratoconjunctivitis in mule deer and moose in Wyoming.

Six cases of infectious keratoconjunctivitis (IKC) in mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) and moose (Alces alces) in Wyoming (USA) were investigated during fall and winter of 1995 and 1996. Excessive lacrimation, mucopurulent conjunctivitis, keratitis, and corneal opacity were observed in mule deer. Moose had severe mucopurulent conjunctivitis, keratitis, and corneal ulceration. Hemolytic, non-piliated Moraxella ovis was isolated from two mule deer and two moose. We attempted to reproduce IKC in three mule deer fawns using an isolate of M. ovis from a clinically affected mule deer. These fawns did

Bacteria and nematodes in the conjunctiva of mule deer from Wyoming and Utah.

Swabs of conjunctiva were collected from 44 live and 226 hunter-harvested mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) from Wyoming and Utah (USA). We identified 29 gram negative and 22 gram positive bacterial taxonomic categories, but many isolates from hunter-harvested animals were environmental contaminants. Staphylococcus spp. and Micrococcus spp. were the most common gram positive bacteria isolated, and Enterobacter spp., Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas spp. were common gram negative bacteria isolated. Thelazia californiensis were found in 15% of hunter-harvested deer in Utah in 1994 and in 8% in 19

A focus of deer tick virus transmission in the northcentral United States.

We screened salivary glands from adult deer ticks collected near Spooner and Hayward, Wisconsin, to determine whether deer tick virus, a recently described flavivirus, occurs with other tickborne agents in the upper Midwest. Intraacinar inclusions suggestive of replicating virus were detected in 4 (4.6%) of 87 ticks. The virus was isolated by suckling-mouse inoculation.

Studies on the hypodermosis affecting red deer in central and southern Spain.

From November 1992 to February 1993, 455 red deer (Cervus elaphus) were surveyed in order to estimate the prevalence of warble fly (Hypoderma actaeon) larvae under the skin of this ungulate species. Material came from Montes de Toledo, Sierra Morena, Sierra de Alcaraz, and Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas Natural Park (central and southern Spain). We observed a prevalence of 92%, with a mean +/- SD intensity of 35.7 +/- 41.3 grubs per parasitized host; there was a maximum of 317 larvae per host. No significant differences in prevalence by host sex were found, although significant differ

[The lymph nodes of the fallow deer (Dama dama L., 1758)].

In the present study the topographic anatomy of the lymph nodes of fallow deer is described in detail. The Nl. axillaris proprius is absent. This, however, is the only apparent difference when comparing fallow deer with cattle, sheep, goat and roe deer (Capreolus capreolus L. 1758) in respect to the existence of the lymph nodes. Minor topographic deviations are of little importance for locating the lymph nodes.

Iodine-129 in mule deer thyroids in the Rocky Mountain West.

Thyroids from mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) were collected in New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming and Idaho and 129I/127I atom ratios were determined. Iodine-129/127 atom ratios were significantly (P less than 0.005) different among states. Ratios in Wyoming and Idaho control thyroids were significantly (P less than 0.05) larger than ratios in New Mexico and Colorado. Fallout from past atmospheric nuclear tests at the Nevada Test Site is suggested as a possible explanation for the differences in ratios. Average 129I/127I ratios in thyroids of other large mammals collected 54 km west and 116 km nor

Experimental infections with Dictyocaulus viviparus in vaccinated and unvaccinated red deer.

Four of eight red deer calves which had been artificially reared and were lungworm free were vaccinated with bovine lungworm oral vaccine when eight weeks old; the other four were not vaccinated. Three of each category were challenged daily with 500 Dictyocaulus viviparus infective stage larvae per kg liveweight for 17 days when six months old while one in each category was left as an unchallenged control. The effects of challenge were monitored and all challenged deer and one control were killed for post mortem assessment. Challenge with D viviparus was associated with reduced food intakes an

The isolation and characterization of a Babesia from red deer (Cervus elaphus).

On three occasions, antibody positive blood from wild red deer produced overt infections with Babesia when inoculated into splenectomized red deer. One of the deer also became infected with Eperythrozoon sp. Babesia divergens, B. capreoli and the Babesia of red deer are morphologically similar and the marginal position of the parasites in the host cell is characteristic. Babesia were not seen and no antibody was formed in five out of six splenectomized bovine calves which were injected with parasitaemic red deer blood. Two of these calves when challenged with B. divergens were fully susceptibl
