Expression and function of miR-218-5p in the pathogenesis of postpartum depression.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a prevalent mental health condition following childbirth, currently diagnosed primarily through subjective evaluations, and its underlying biological mechanisms remain poorly understood. OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the potential of miR-218-5p as a biomarker for PPD, while further explored its regulatory roles in depressive-like behaviors, inflammatory, and oxidative stress to provide clinical guidance for the precise diagnosis and treatment. METHODS: This study enrolled 106 PPD patients and 95 healthy puerperae. A PPD-like model was established

Emotional Reaction at Pregnancy Recognition and Risk of Postpartum Depressive Symptoms.

AIM: To examine whether women's emotional reaction when they first recognize their pregnancy is associated with postpartum depressive symptoms and whether risk increases across positive, ambivalent, and negative feelings. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study at a tertiary perinatal center in Japan. At the first prenatal visit, women answered the free-text question, "How did you feel when you found out you were pregnant?" Responses were coded as positive, ambivalent, or negative; unclear descriptions were excluded. All women who delivered at ≥ 22 weeks' gestation between 2018 and

Assisted reproductive technologies and postpartum depressive symptoms: A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) have become the main treatment for infertility. ART treatment can be a stressful life event for infertile females. Whether there is an association between ARTs and postpartum depressive symptoms (PDS) has not been established. METHODS: PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, and CNKI were searched. The pooled outcome was the difference in incidence of PDS within 1 year postpartum between ARTs and the spontaneous pregnancy group. RESULTS: A total of 12 cohort studies, which were conducted in eight developed countries and two developing countrie

Influence of 5-HTTLPR polymorphism on postpartum depressive and posttraumatic symptoms.

INTRODUCTION: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a multifactor disorder caused by psychological, social, and also biological factors. 5-HTTLPR polymorphism in the promoter region of serotonin transporter gene seems to influence PPD onset. In this study, we examined the effect of 5-HTTLPR polymorphism on prenatal and postnatal symptoms of depression and posttraumatic stress in women. METHODS: A longitudinal design with three points - time 1 (32-40 weeks gestation); time 2 (2 or 3 weeks after birth), and time 3 (3 months after birth) - was made. A total of 141 women were recruited during childbirth

Risk and protective factors for antepartum and postpartum depression: a prospective study.

INTRODUCTION: Antepartum risk and protective factors for postpartum depression (PPD; the most common mental disorder after childbirth besides postpartum anxiety), have been frequently investigated in cross-sectional studies, but less often longitudinally. This study examined linear and moderator effects of risk and protective factors for peripartum depression. First, we investigated the predictive power of risk factors (physical problems during pregnancy, pregnancy-related anxiety, stressful life events, dysfunctional self-consciousness (DSC)) and protective factors (resilience, social support

Maternal cortical response to baby pain and postpartum depressive symptoms.

Decreased maternal empathic abilities toward infants have been reported with postpartum depression (PPD). The aims of this study were: (1) To identify mothers' cortical regions activated by the observation of their own newborn's pain; (2) To study the relation between such cortical activation and PPD symptoms. By optical topography, a functional neuroimaging system, we assessed mothers' cortical activation when watching their own newborns during a heel-prick. PPD symptoms and newborn's pain expression were also assessed. Watching their newborn in pain activated mothers' left somatosensory cort
