Priority concerns for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The approach taken to support individuals during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic needs to take into account the requirements of people with intellectual disabilities and/or autism, who represent a major vulnerable group, with higher rates of co-occurring health conditions and a greater risk of dying prematurely. To date, little evidence on COVID-related concerns have been produced and no report has provided structured feedback from the point of view of people with intellectual disabilities and/or autism or of their family/carers. AIMS: To provide systemised eviden

Technology and social media use by adult patients with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Technology and social media offer individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (I/DD) unique and innovative ways to facilitate active participation in their own healthcare process. What remains unclear is the extent to which devices are currently used by this growing patient population. OBJECTIVE: To explore the prevalence of technology and social media use, as well as the possible barriers, among adult patients with I/DD. METHODS: A cross-sectional study utilizing an anonymous, accessible survey was used to obtain data from all adult patients (18 + years of ag

Using Virtual Interactive Training Agents (ViTA) with Adults with Autism and Other Developmental Disabilities.

Conversational virtual human (VH) agents are increasingly used to support role-play experiential learning. This project examined whether a Virtual Interactive Training Agent (ViTA) system would improve job interviewing skills in individuals with autism and developmental disabilities (N = 32). A linear mixed model was employed to evaluate adjusted least square mean differences of means scores on the Marino Interview Assessment Scale (MIAS) across different time points. The mean score of MIAS over all questions increased between the first ViTA session and the final face-to-face interview. Partic

Estimated Prevalence of Children With Diagnosed Developmental Disabilities in the United States, 2014-2016.

Developmental disabilities are a set of heterogeneous disorders characterized by difficulties in one or more domains, including but not limited to, learning, behavior, and self-care. This report provides the latest prevalence estimates for diagnosed autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disability, and other developmental delay among children aged 3–17 years from the 2014–2016 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS). Estimates are also presented for any developmental disability, defined as having had one or more of these three diagnoses. Prevalence estimates are based on parent or guardian re

Promoting independent ambulation: A case study of an elementary school student with developmental disabilities.

The limited independent ambulation of individuals with developmental disabilities may be improved with the utilization of support walker devices. In the present study, a forward chaining procedure with an embedded changing criterion component was used to teach an elementary school student with multiple disabilities to acquire and maintain the skills needed to use his walker device successfully, and to increase his total distance walked while using his walker device. Results indicated that the student quickly acquired three of the four requisite steps necessary to use the walker device, but eve

Fracture risk in people with developmental disabilities: results of a large claims data analysis.

UNLABELLED: Age- and sex-specific fracture rates of 18,000 people with developmental disabilities aged 0-69 years were compared to the general population. Age-standardized incidence of femoral fracture was 4.8- and 7.1-fold higher in women and men, respectively. Comparable fracture risks to the general population occurred 10-15 years earlier in females and 20-40 years earlier in males. INTRODUCTION: Previous studies suggested that fracture risks in people with developmental disabilities (DD) may be higher than in people in the general population. However, there are no current sufficiently lar

Pyrethroid insecticide exposure and cognitive developmental disabilities in children: The PELAGIE mother-child cohort.

Pyrethroid insecticides are widely used in agriculture and in homes. Despite the neurotoxicity of these insecticides at high doses, few studies have examined whether lower-level exposures could adversely affect children's neurodevelopment. The PELAGIE cohort included 3421 pregnant women from Brittany, France between 2002 and 2006. When their children reached their sixth birthday, 428 mothers from the cohort were randomly selected, successfully contacted and found eligible. A total of 287 (67%) mothers agreed to participate with their children in the neuropsychological follow-up. Two cognitive

The construct of the multisensory temporal binding window and its dysregulation in developmental disabilities.

Behavior, perception and cognition are strongly shaped by the synthesis of information across the different sensory modalities. Such multisensory integration often results in performance and perceptual benefits that reflect the additional information conferred by having cues from multiple senses providing redundant or complementary information. The spatial and temporal relationships of these cues provide powerful statistical information about how these cues should be integrated or "bound" in order to create a unified perceptual representation. Much recent work has examined the temporal factors

A study of executive functions in delinquents with developmental disabilities within a Japanese reformatory.

Many attempts have been made to address the relation between antisocial behavior and executive function deficits. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate executive functions in juvenile delinquents with developmental disabilities by using the Behavioral Assessment of the Dysexecutive Syndrome (BADS), and then cross referencing this to their performance on Wechsler IQ Test, Das Naglieri Cognitive Assessment System (DN-CAS), and Rey's Auditory Verbal Learning Test (AVLT). The data was collected from 164 participants with Mental Retardation (MR), Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD), and Atten

DVD-based stories of people with developmental disabilities as resources for inter-professional education.

PURPOSE: The use of DVD stories about people with developmental disabilities within inter-professional education (IPE) across healthcare disciplines was evaluated. METHODS: First year healthcare students (n = 241) from an IPE unit responded to an attitude scale before and after viewing and discussing a DVD portraying the life and healthcare needs of an adult with cerebral palsy; a third round of data collection occurred later. Qualitative data were obtained from four first year and six second year tutors who discussed student reactions to the DVD. Six first year and four second year students

Anger and assaultiveness of male forensic patients with developmental disabilities: links to volatile parents.

This study with 107 male forensic patients with developmental disabilities investigated whether exposure to parental anger and aggression was related to anger and assaultiveness in a hospital, controlling for background variables. Patient anger and aggression were assessed by self-report, staff-ratings, and archival records. Exposure to parental anger/aggression, assessed by a clinical interview, was significantly related to patient self-reported anger, staff-rated anger and aggression, and physical assaults in hospital, controlling for age, intelligence quotient, length of hospital stay, viol

Assessment of aberrant behavior maintained by wheelchair movement in a child with developmental disabilities.

A child that used a wheelchair was anecdotally observed to display little aggressive behavior when being pushed in his wheelchair, but higher rates of aggressive behavior when movement was terminated. A functional analysis was conducted to systematically assess the relationship between aggression and wheelchair movement. The functional analysis results revealed elevated rates of aggression when it resulted in being briefly pushed in the wheelchair. This functional hypothesis was subsequently validated by teaching the child to request movement through appropriate means and demonstrating that ag

The effectiveness of a group discrete trial instructional approach for preschoolers with developmental disabilities.

Group behavioral classroom instruction for children with developmental disabilities has been shown to allow for increased efficiency, approximation to naturalistic arrangements, and enhanced opportunity for interaction, social teaching and observational learning. This study examines the effectiveness of a group instructional extension of one to one discrete trial teaching, which involves the overlapping of trials between students along with the use of sequential and choral group teaching. A multiple baseline design across tasks was employed to examine the effectiveness of the group instruction

[A study on incidence of developmental disabilities in Higashi-Osaka City, Japan, 1988-1992].

A population based statistical analysis was performed of the incidence of developmental disabilities in Higashi-Osaka, a city in Osaka Prefecture with a population of about 500,000. The number of live births during 1988-1992 was 24,980, of whom those with cerebral palsy (CP), severe motor and intellectual disability syndrome (SMIDS), infantile autism, mental retardation (MR) and Down syndrome numbered 30, 21, 26, 268 and 25, respectively. And the respective incidence rates per 1,000 were 1.20, 0.84, 1.04, 10.7 and 1.0. For CP, the percentage of premature children was 63%, higher than in previo

"We're Trapped": Maternal Well-Being and Caregiving for Children With Developmental Disabilities in American Samoa.

Mothers raising children with developmental disabilities in American Samoa navigate caregiving within fa'a Samoa (the Samoan way of life), where family, culture, and spirituality are deeply intertwined. Yet, the lived experiences of these mothers remain largely undocumented. This study explored how mothers make meaning of caregiving and its implications for holistic well-being within this unique cultural and geographic context. Using interpretative phenomenological analysis with culturally congruent focus group methods, 15 mothers participated across three focus groups. Data were interpreted t

Systems and policy factors affecting service delivery for homeless adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Intellectual and developmental disability (IDD) is characterized by impairment of cognitive function that results in daily living limitations. Adults with IDD face barriers to meeting basic needs and must navigate multiple public systems to access services. The housing affordability crisis has contributed to a disproportionate overrepresentation of adults with IDD who experience homelessness. Little evidence has articulated the unique systems- and policy-level issues facing homeless adults with IDD. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to 1) map the systems with which adults w
