'Flow out technique' for safe and complete removal of ophthalmic viscosurgical devices after phacoemulsification cataract surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Ophthalmic viscosurgical devices (OVDs) are widely used in phacoemulsification cataract surgery. The adverse effects of OVDs retained after cataract surgery are well known, and complete OVD removal should be achieved in every case. METHODS: We describe a novel and simple technique using a two-handed irrigation and aspiration (I/A) for safer removal of OVDs. RESULTS: The technique was successfully used in 125 eyes of 125 patients after the completion of phacoemulsification cataract surgery. No intra or postoperative complications were observed. CONCLUSIONS: The technique described

Does removal of aids/devices and help make a difference in the Childhood Health Assessment Questionnaire disability index?

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether the removal of aids/devices and/or help from another person in the Childhood Health Assessment Questionnaire (C-HAQ) leads to a significant change in the disability index (DI) score and responsiveness in juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). METHODS: Changes in the C-HAQ DI score in a cross-sectional sample of 2663 children with JIA and in 530 active patients with JIA in a trial of methotrexate (MTX) were compared. RESULTS: Patients in the MTX trial had higher disease activity and disability than the cross-sectional sample. The frequency of aids/devices (range 1.2

Fluoroscopy-guided double-J ureteral stent removal using a novel metallic hook device "Kagibo" in women: A retrospective study.

The replacement of double-J ureteral stents (DJ stents) is a routine procedure in urology that conventionally requires cystoscopy. We developed a new medical device, the "Kagibo," for removing DJ stents without cystoscopy in women. This study aimed to report the usefulness and safety of Kagibo in DJ stent removal in women. This retrospective study included a total of 34 female patients with a median age of 67 years (range: 44-87 years) who required DJ stent replacement between April and July 2024. The procedure was performed with the patients in the supine position without pain management. DJ

The Removal, Excision, Sterilization, and Quarantine (RESQ) Method is a Feasible Alternative Treatment for Cardiac Implantable Electronic Device Infections.

BACKGROUND: Current guidelines recommend that all infected cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) should be removed. However, financial or anatomical concerns can lead to management of infection with simple debridement, as opposed to complete removal. In this observational study, we report the outcomes of our modified procedure for this real-world dilemma. METHODS AND RESULTS: The Quarantine (RESQ) method is characterized as follows: the removal (R) of all non-essential foreign materials, including old sutures and leads; the excision (E) of all non-viable, chronically inflamed, granul

Totally Percutaneous Insertion and Removal of Impella Device Using Axillary Artery in the Setting of Advanced Peripheral Artery Disease.

Traditionally, brachial and common femoral arteries have served as access sites of choice, with many operators recently converting to radial artery access for coronary angiography and percutaneous intervention due to literature suggesting reduced bleeding risk, better patient outcomes, and lower hospital-associated costs. However, radial access has limitations when percutaneous procedures requiring larger sheath sizes are performed. Six Fr sheaths are considered the limit for safe use with the radial artery given that the typical luminal diameter of the vessel is approximately 2 mm, while peri

Management of cardiac device infections: A retrospective survey of a non-surgical approach combining antibiotic therapy with transvenous removal.

Pacemakers (PMs) and implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) have become life-saving therapeutic tools for patients with cardiac arrhythmia. Complications include thrombosis, embolism and infections at a highly variable rate. Surgical removal of the infected device has been perceived as the only way to guarantee a successful outcome and to reduce the high risk of mortality. Recently, a transvenous extraction method has been developed to remove infected intracardiac leads without sternotomy. This survey was designed to evaluate the outcome of an approach combining antibiotic therapy with

USE OF HYSTEROSCOPIC MORCELLATION WITH A MYOSURE® DEVICE FOR REMOVAL OF UTERINE FOREIGN MATERIAL IN AN ORANGUTAN (PONGO SP.).

A 36-yr-old female intact hybrid orangutan (Pongo sp.) presented with evidence of chronic bacterial cystitis with no response to treatment with multiple systemic antibiotics. Abnormalities were identified within the reproductive tract on CT scan, and hysteroscopy was pursued based on the recommendation of an obstetrician-gynecologist. Hysteroscopic examination revealed a large amount of intrauterine foreign material consistent with wood wool from the orangutan's bedding. A hysteroscopic morcellator (MyoSure®) was used to remove the foreign material. Histologic examination of endometrial biopsi

Cystoscopy to remove an intrauterine contraceptive device embedded in the urinary bladder wall: a case report and literature review.

Migration and embedding of an intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD) in the urinary bladder wall is rare. We present such a case of a 30-year-old woman with complaints of persistent lower urinary tract symptoms and a history of IUCD placement 8 years earlier. The IUCD was successfully removed with cystoscopy alone. The patient recovered well and had her second baby after the surgery without complaints of new urinary symptoms.

Safe and Efficient Removal of Massive Head and Neck Vascular Malformations Using Vessel Sealing Energy Devices.

Large vascular malformations (VMs) pose several difficult clinical challenges to the plastic surgeon. Traditionally surgical dissection was labor-intensive and required a significant amount of time and technique. The advent of more advanced vessel sealing devices has resulted in easier vascular and lymphatic control during resection surgery. The authors present 2 cases of large VMs resected using newer energy devices. First, an infant who was born with a large neck AVM that was acutely bleeding requiring immediate control. The authors utilized the Impact Ligasure device to perform a subtotal r

Metatarsal Head Resection Versus a Removable Mechanical Device for Offloading of the Neuropathic Diabetic Plantar Forefoot Ulcer.

Although surgical offloading seems a more permanent solution for prevention and treatment of neuropathic plantar diabetic forefoot ulcers (DFUs), the evidence for this assumption is weak and needs further studies to be established. The aim of this retrospective study is to compare the healing efficacy, associated morbidity, and recurrence rates of surgical versus removable knee-high offloading for neuropathic plantar (DFUs) healing. From January 2016 to January 2018, 70 neuropathic plantar forefoot DFUs were nonrandomly assigned to either removable knee-high cam-walker (n = 35), or metatarsal

Biodegradable device applied in flatfoot surgery: comparative studies between clinical and technological aspects of removed screws.

Poly-L-lactide (PLLA) is one of the most used polymers for biomedical application; its use in sutures and other implants has been widely investigated. Although the knowledge of PLLA biodegradation and biocompatibility features is deep, PLLA screws used to correct the flat foot deformity have deserved attention since they are not degraded in most of cases after a long period of years (3-7) from the implantation. In this article, a clinical and radiological evaluation (NMR, histological and clinical outcomes) on patients was correlated with physico-chemical characterization (by SEM, DSC, GPC and

Additional Carbon Dioxide Removal by Oxygenated Dialysis Fluid: Insights for the Development of a Novel Lung and Kidney Assist Device.

RenOx, a novel artificial lung and kidney assist device, combines gas exchange and dialysis fibers for integrated respiratory and renal support, with dialysis fibers intended for toxin clearance and filtration. However, when kidney support is not needed, dialysis fibers could be repurposed for additional respiratory support for patients in exacerbated cases, and to compensate losses in CO 2 transfer caused by the partial replacement of gas exchange fibers by dialysis fibers. We analyzed the feasibility of extracorporeal gas transfer via dialysis membranes with fully oxygenated and decarboxylat

Biventricular pacemaker implantation via a persistent left superior vena cava after removal of an infected device from the right side.

Persistent left superior vena cava (PLSVC) is a congenital anomaly that poses a unique challenge when implanting cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) from the left side. To date, only a few isolated case reports are available regarding biventricular pacemaker implantation via PLSVC. These reports lack procedural details and tips to overcome difficulties faced by the physician when performing this technically demanding procedure. In the present report, we describe a patient who successfully underwent biventricular pacemaker implantation via a PLSVC after transvenous extraction of an i

Full thickness resection device (FTRD) for endoluminal removal of large bowel tumours: development of the instrument and related experimental studies.

We describe a novel device for full thickness resectioning of large bowel lesions. The device has been assessed in experimental studies. Tumours of the large bowel are a frequent disease with increasing incidence figures. If detected at an early stage, local treatment of colon tumours is possible through an endoluminal access. Currently, full thickness resection can only be performed in the rectum with the TEM technique, while snare resection through the flexible endoscope will only allow mucosa resection. We have developed a new device which allows full thickness bowel wall resections up to t
