Morphometric evaluation of the linea alba in fresh corpses.

PURPOSE: Diastasis recti abdominis is an increase in the distance between the medial borders of the two rectus muscles. It is most often triggered after intra-abdominal pressure increases, such as postpartum or in obesity. Most publications are based on radiological studies or are done in certain subgroups, without unanimous reference values of the distance between the rectus abdominis or standardization. METHODS: Forty-one cadavers were studied. Exclusion criteria: signs of abdominal trauma, major burns, presence of scar from previous abdominal surgery, clinical signs of abdominal hernia, an

Age Pathognomonic Indicators of Injury Predisposition as a Basis for Public Health Preservation during Physical Activity.

A necessary condition for public health maintenance is regular physical activity. A significant increase in the number of musculoskeletal injuries, occurring during physical education and sport activities, actualizes the development of effective measures for their prevention. Early diagnosis of injury predisposition, based on identification of connective tissue dysplasia indicators specific for different age periods, is of particular importance for the prevention of such injuries. The study, performed in accordance to STROBE guidelines, included 78 persons separated into two age subgroups: Gro

[A Case of Adenocarcinoma Arising from Ectopic Gastric Mucosa in Meckel's Diverticulum with Abdominal Wall Abscess].

A 47-year-old woman visited a neighboring hospital because of lower abdominal pain and high fever. She was diagnosed with acute pyelonephritis and administered(oral)antibiotics. However, there was no sign of improvement. She was referred to our hospital for closer examination. Computed tomography revealed an 8 cm abdominal wall abscess spreading from the prevesical space to the rectus abdominis. Incisional drainage was performed under local anesthesia. She developed rectus abdominis muscle diastasis, and a laparotomy was performed 2 months later. Intraoperative findings showed that her Meckel'

Standardization of the Extent and Timing of Rectus Diastasis Repair in Abdominoplasty Cases with TOF Neuromuscular Monitoring: A Clinical Study.

Despite the close focus on the anterior abdominal wall and the classification, maneuvers and materials related to the rectus abdominis and its fascia, there is no established standard concerning the extent of plication. The anterior abdominal wall is a musculoaponeurotic structure and a dynamic motor system with innervation and tonus. Therefore, the timing of the plication is as important as the suture technique and material, since the muscle relaxant will lose its effect in varying time periods. The aims of our study were to determine the change in the amount of plication between groups with

Inter-rectus distance and its relation to pelvic floor function in primiparous women in the remote postpartum period: A cross-sectional study.

Postpartum diastasis recti abdominis (DRA), characterized by increased inter-rectus distance (IRD), is common and linked to functional impairments, but its association with pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) remains uncertain. This study investigated whether IRD correlates with pelvic floor muscle (PFM) function and examined the association between DRA and PFD in primiparous women during the remote postpartum period. This cross-sectional study included primiparous women 45 days to 12 months postpartum. The IRD and PFM function were assessed using standardized ultrasound protocols, with additional

Endoscopic enhanced-view totally extraperitoneal prosthetic (eTEP) versus open Rives-Stoppa repair as a treatment of midline abdominal wall hernias with rectus diastasis: comparison of postoperative pain and length of hospital stay in a single-centre surgical cohort.

The Rives-Stoppa (RS) procedure is a gold standard treatment of midline abdominal wall hernias. Comparability of pain control and outcomes to the enhanced-view totally extraperitoneal prosthetic (eTEP) repair remain unclear. A single-centre retrospective surgical cohort was selected including 30 RS repairs (January 2019-November 2021) and 30 consecutive eTEP procedures (September 2021-August 2022) for midline abdominal wall hernia(s) with rectus abdominis diastasis. Postoperative pain and outcomes were compared up to 1 month. Presence and median duration of patient-controlled analgesia were, r

Is Diastasis Recti Abdominis Rehabilitation after Childbirth Able to Prevent the Onset of Stress Urinary Incontinence? A Case-Control Study.

Background and Objectives: Pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) represent the first-line approach to pelvic floor dysfunctions (PFDs). Recently, studies have shown a synergy between the pelvic floor and abdominal muscles, hypothesizing that the anatomical and functional integrity of the abdominal wall plays a role in the prevention of pelvic floor disorders. Some studies have shown a significant correlation between diastasis recti abdominis (DRA) and stress urinary incontinence (SUI). Nevertheless, the evidence reported in the literature is controversial and based on low-quality data. The aim o

Clinical and Radiologic Predictors of Parastomal Hernia Development After End Colostomy.

OBJECTIVE. Parastomal hernia (PSH) is a common complication that can occur after end colostomy and may result in considerable morbidity. To select the best candidates for prophylactic measures, knowledge of preoperative PSH predictors is important. This study aimed to determine the value of clinical parameters, preoperative CT-based body metrics, and size of the abdominal wall defect created during end colostomy and measured at postoperative CT for predicting PSH development. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Sixty-five patients who underwent permanent end colostomy with at least 1 year of follow-up were

Minimally Invasive Stapled Abdominal Wall Repair: A New Surgical Technique.

Background: Diastasis recti (DR) is a common condition, especially in women after pregnancy, often associated with concomitant hernia defects and defined as a rupture of the midline and a separation of the rectus muscle more than 2 cm. Symptoms related to this are low back pain, urinary incontinence and pelvic prolapse, as well as abdominal bulging and core instability. We analyzed clinical and functional outcomes after treatment of DR alone or associated with midline hernias in 219 patients who underwent a midline reconstruction using miSAR® technique (minimally invasive stapled abdominal wal

Diastasis recti abdominis after childbirth: Is it a predictor of stress urinary incontinence?

INTRODUCTION: Pregnancy and childbirth are considered risk factors for the development of diastasis recti abdominis (DRA). This anatomical change could be on the basis of stress urinary incontinence (SUI). Aim of this study was to assess the relationship between the value of DRA and SUI, in order to understand, if a specific abdominal rehabilitation might be indicated. METHODS: All women with clinically and urodynamically proven SUI (group 1) 6 months after first childbirth, have been enrolled and compared with women without any symptoms of SUI (group 2). Exclusion criteria were age > 45 year

Prevalence and risk factors of diastasis recti abdominis from late pregnancy to 6 months postpartum, and relationship with lumbo-pelvic pain.

Diastasis recti abdominis (DRA) is an impairment characterized by a midline separation of the rectus abdominis muscles along the linea alba. It has its onset during pregnancy and the first weeks following childbirth. There is scant knowledge on both prevalence and risk factors for development of the condition. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of DRA at gestational week 35 and three timepoints postpartum, possible risk factors, and the relationship between DRA and lumbo-pelvic pain. Ultrasound images of inter rectus distance (IRD) were recorded in 84 healthy primiparous w

Rectus diastasis corrected with absorbable suture: a long-term evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Correction of rectus diastasis (RD) is performed during most abdominoplasties. This study aimed to evaluate the long-term result of RD correction when the plication of the anterior rectus sheath is performed with an absorbable suture. METHODS: Abdominoplasty was performed for 12 women who presented with Nahas' type A musculoaponeurotic deformity. The RD was measured preoperatively with two computed tomography (CT) scan slices at two levels: 3 cm above and 2 cm below the umbilicus. The bony levels at which the slices were taken served as a reference for the postoperative CT scans.

The Presentation Patterns of Tessier 7 Clefts.

Given its rarity, there are few large-number studies regarding Tessier 7 clefts. A review and classification of 81 Tessier 7 patients who presented to our craniofacial center was performed. The most common Tessier 7 clefts were middle positioned, followed by agenetic, superiorly rotated, and inferiorly rotated clefts, respectively. A total of 77/81 patients had simple macrostomia and 4/81 patients had macrostomia with muscle diastasis. The most common associated anomalies were craniofacial microsomia, skin tags, and ear anomalies occurring in 80%, 71%, and 37% of patients, respectively. In thi
