Theoretical models and empirical evidence suggest that brooding, the maladaptive sub-component of depressive rumination, is associated with a sub-set of depressogenic interpersonal difficulties characterised by submissive interpersonal behaviours and rejection sensitivity. This study tested whether these cognitive and interpersonal vulnerability factors independently predicted future depression and investigated their interdependence in predicting depression. A heterogeneous adult sample completed self-report measures assessing depressive symptoms, brooding, reflection, rejection sensitivity an

The structure and magnitude of sex differences in interpersonal problems across several data sets were examined, guided by the interpersonal circumplex model and the structural summary method. Data were self-reported interpersonal difficulties, assessed with the 64-item version of the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems (IIP; L. M. Horowitz, S. E. Rosenberg, B. A. Baer, G. Ureño, & V. S. Villaseñor, 1988). In Study 1, the authors focused on sex differences at the level of specific interpersonal complaints (item level). In Study 2, the authors examined sex differences in octant scores of the II

This paper explores two interpersonal sensitivities (to rejection and to social put-down) in a group of 54 depressed men and 50 depressed women. Measures of anhedonia, anxiety, anger, social comparison, and submissive behaviour were also obtained. We found no differences in rejection sensitivity, anger, anhedonia, or anxiety between the sample of depressed men and women. Depressed women rated themselves as more submissive and more inferior than depressed men, and blamed themselves more for being criticized and put-down by other people. Principal components analysis (PCA) revealed three underly

The effect of social confrontation stress on the normal distribution of blood T cells into lymphoid organs and some other body tissues was studied. Social stress was induced by placing a male Fischer 344 (F334) rat into the home cage of a resident opponent. 51Cr-labeled blood T cells isolated from syngeneic donor, were intravenously injected into recipients immediately before confrontation. The accumulation of 51Cr-labeled T cells in the spleen, mesenteric and cervical lymph nodes 24 h after injection was about 30% lower in socially stressed than in control males. Substantially higher localiza

BACKGROUND: Mares are the only companion animals simulating women in the large diameter of their follicles. Horses start reproduction at the age of three years, and some of them live for >30 years, so aging influences their reproductive capacity. Mares are sensitive to summer heat stress as they can sweat like humans.
AIM: The current work aimed to study the effects of age (young versus senile), season (cold versus hot), and the hormonal treatments during embryo collection on the dominant and subordinate follicular dynamics and hemodynamics and circulating ovarian hormones in embryo donor mar

BACKGROUND: Cell therapy for intrinsic urinary sphincter deficiency (ISD) in women has been moderately effective, and improvements are needed. To improve treatment efficacy, it is important to better understand determinates of cell efficacy in the different patient cohorts. We have reported that in nonhuman primates the chronicity of ISD may affect cell efficacy, but additional factors (age, psychosocial stress, hormone status, body weight) can be associated with many disease/treatment outcomes in women - and these factors are the focus of this study.
METHODS: Adult female cynomolgus monkeys

Stereotypies are invariant and repetitive behaviour patterns that seemingly have no function, which tend to develop in captive animals faced with insoluble problems and may be indicative of reduced welfare. A 4 year prospective study of the factors influencing the development of stereotypic and redirected behaviours (abnormal behaviour) in a population of 225 young Thoroughbred and part-Thoroughbred horses was conducted between 1995 and 1999. Abnormal behaviour affected 34.7% of the population. Multivariable analysis showed that foals of low- or middle-ranking mares were less likely to develop

To achieve precise control of the oestrous cycle in cattle it is necessary to control both the life span of the corpus luteum and the follicle wave status at the end of the treatment. Antral follicle growth in cattle occurs in distinct wavelike patterns during the ovarian cycle and the postpartum anoestrous period. The emergence of each new wave is stimulated by a transient increase in FSH. Each follicle wave has an inherent life span of 7-10 days as it progresses through the different stages of development, viz., emergence, selection, dominance and atresia or ovulation. The dominant follicle

BACKGROUND: Women are at greater risk than men of developing depression and comorbid disorders such as cardiovascular disease. This enhanced risk begins at puberty and ends following menopause, suggesting a role for ovarian hormones in this sensitivity. Here we used a model of psychosocial witness stress in female rats to determine the stress-induced neurobiological adaptations that underlie stress susceptibility in an ovarian hormone-dependent manner.
METHODS: Intact or ovariectomized (OVX) female rats were exposed to five daily 15-minute witness-stress exposures. Witness-stress-evoked buryi

BACKGROUND: A recent study demonstrated that low-voltage-sensitive T-type calcium channel blocker ethosuximide shows rapid antidepressant actions. This study was conducted to compare the antidepressant actions of ethosuximide and (R)-ketamine in a chronic social defeat stress model.
METHODS: Ethosuximide (100, 200, or 400 mg/kg), (R)-ketamine (10 mg/kg), or saline was administered i.p. to chronic social defeat stress-susceptible mice. Subsequently, locomotion test, tail suspension test, forced swimming test, and 1% sucrose preference test were performed.
RESULTS: (R)-ketamine showed rapid an

Although chronic psychosocial stress is often accompanied by changes in basal hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activity, it is vital for a chronically-stressed organism to mount adequate glucocorticoid (GC) responses when exposed to acute challenges. The main aim of the present study was to test whether this is true or not for the chronic subordinate colony housing (CSC, 19 days) paradigm, an established and clinically relevant mouse model of chronic psychosocial stress. As shown previously, CSC mice are characterized by unaffected morning and decreased evening plasma corticosterone (C

Gender-based relationship power is frequently linked to women's capacity to reduce sexual risk behaviors. This study offers an exploration of predictors of relationship power, as measured by the multidimensional and theoretically grounded sexual relationship power scale, among women in outpatient substance abuse treatment. Linear models were used to test nine predictors (age, race/ethnicity, education, time in treatment, economic dependence, substance use, sexual concurrency, partner abuse, and sex role orientation) of relationship power among 513 women participating in a multi-site HIV risk r

OBJECTIVE: To examine behavioral observations of affiliation (ie, warmth versus hostility) and control (ie, dominance versus submissiveness) and prior divorce as predictors of coronary artery calcification (CAC) in older couples. In some but not all studies, marital disruption and low marital quality have been shown to confer risk of coronary artery disease (CAD). Inconsistencies might reflect limitations of self-reports of marital quality compared with behavioral observations. Also, aspects of marital quality related to CAD might differ for men and women.
METHODS: Couples underwent computed

The psychometric properties of a recently introduced adult self-report of relational aggression are presented. Specifically, the predictive utility of proactive and reactive peer-directed relational aggression, as well as romantic relational aggression, are explored in a large (N=1387) study of adults. The measure had adequate reliability and validity and the subscales demonstrated unique predictive abilities for a number of dependent variables. In particular, reactive but not proactive relational aggression was uniquely associated with history of abuse, hostile attribution biases, and feeling

This paper tests the hypothesis that patients' stereotypical dysfunctional interpersonal communication styles would be validly measurable by the command or relationship messages experienced by psychiatric nurses while interacting with the patient in the relatively unstructured every day context of the psychiatric ward. The generalizability of interpersonal pressures exerted by patients was tested by having different psychiatric nurses independently appraise patients' command or relationship messages with the Impact Message Inventory, circumplex version (IMI-C). Generalizability of interpersona

We have reported that exposure of preweaning male and female rats to a model of unpredictable mild physical stressors (Neo-A) can decrease the behavioral and hormonal responses to acute and chronic stress as adults. In this paper we have analyzed the effect of Neo-A on development of social behaviors, including aggressiveness, social dominance, and sexual behavior in adulthood. The subjects were divided into two groups: Neo-A (daily exposed to unpredictable mild stresses- from day 2 up to day 15 of suckling; n = 30 litters) and controls (C) (undisturbed rats, except for testing, during the sam

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess bullying and psychological disturbance among 5,813 elementary school-aged children.
METHOD: The data consisted of information given by the parents, teachers, and children themselves (Rutter A2 Scale, Rutter B2 Scale and Children's Depression Inventory). Children involved in bullying (as bullies, bully-victims, and victims) were compared to other children.
RESULTS: More boys than girls were found to be involved in bullying. Bully-victims scored highest in externalizing behaviour and hyperactivity, and they themselves reported feelings of ineffect

This study examined the predictors of domestic violence within a sample of 60 immigrant Latinas, of whom 30 had sought assistance for abuse and 30 had sought other family services. Hypotheses were derived from several frameworks relevant to understanding abuse--intrapsychic (learned helplessness), interpersonal (family violence), and feminist theory. Findings related to the specific formulations were subsequently combined into a model of abuse in which the mutuality of communication within the couple mediates the effects of husband's intoxication and environmental stressors on the occurrence/s

Schistosome parasites cause a chronic inflammatory disease in humans, and recent studies have emphasized the importance of control programs for understanding the aquatic phases of schistosomiasis transmission. The host-seeking behavior of larval schistosomes (miracidia) for their snail intermediate hosts plays a critical role in parasite transmission. Using field-derived strains of Kenyan snails and parasites, we tested two main hypotheses: (1) Parasites prefer the most compatible host, and (2) parasites avoid hosts that are already infected. We tested preference to three Biomphalaria host sna

Observers used automated methods to code who spoke to whom (Who-to-Whom) while families (mother, father, son) of 30 schizophrenics, 13 psychiatrically hospitalized nonschizophrenic controls, and 26 normal controls interacted on four tasks. From the Who-to-Whom data, measures of activity, channels of communication, and other variables were derived. Clear patterns of dominance were found in families of schizophrenics with fathers most and sons least active, while activity was more evenly distributed among family members in both control groups. The mother-son channel of communication was used mor
