The paper deals with the results of the investigations so far, which have pointed out an inverse correlation between drinking-water hardness and morbidity and mortality rates of cardiovascular diseases. Among the water hardness elements special attention has been given to magnesium, as its deficiency in organism is likely to present an important risk factor for cardiovascular disorders. The options of preventive measures in this field are discussed-adding of magnesium to soft drinking-waters, salt enriched with magnesium, consumption of natural mineral waters, or Mg supplements.

Intravenous (i.v. 320 and 640 micrograms/kg) and intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.; 1 microgram/rat) injection of Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide (LPS) powerfully inhibited drinking induced by 24 h water deprivation. Pretreatment with acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) into the preoptic area (POA) completely abolished the effect induced by i.v. LPS, but did not modify that elicited by i.c.v. LPS. Intraperitoneal ASA injections significantly reduced the antidipsogenic effect of i.c.v. LPS. Electrolytic ablation of the subfornical organ (SFO) did not modify the effect induced by either i.v. or i.c.v.

OBJECTIVE: Possible adverse health consequences of excessive energy drink (ED) consumption have led to recommendations by the American Academy of Pediatrics discouraging ED intake by youth. However, limited information on ED counseling by health care providers exists.
METHODS: Data was obtained from the 2011 YouthStyles Survey administered to youth aged 12-17 (n=815). The outcome variable was ED consumption (none vs. ≥1 time/week) and exposure variables were screening and counseling about ED (if doctor/nurse asked about ED consumption and if doctor/nurse recommended against ED consumption).

BACKGROUND: Drinking in the dark (DID) procedures have recently been developed to induce high levels of ethanol drinking in C57BL/6J mice, which result in blood ethanol concentrations reaching levels that have measurable affects on physiology and/or behavior. The present study determined if increased ethanol drinking associated with DID procedures may be motivated by caloric need rather than by the postingestive pharmacological effects of ethanol. To this end, food availability was manipulated or mice were given peripheral administration of orexigenic or anorectic agents during DID procedures.

PROBLEM/CONDITION: Since 1971, CDC, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists have maintained a collaborative Waterborne Disease and Outbreak Surveillance System (WBDOSS) for collecting and reporting data related to occurrences and causes of waterborne-disease outbreaks (WBDOs) and cases of waterborne disease. This surveillance system is the primary source of data concerning the scope and effects of waterborne disease in the United States.
REPORTING PERIOD: Data presented summarize 28 WBDOs that occurred during January 2005--Decem

Although the hamster generally prefers alcohol at a level similar to that of the rat or mouse selectively bred to consume alcohol, the drinking hamster demonstrates neither physical dependence on alcohol nor elevated blood levels of alcohol, which are two typical criteria characterizing an animal model of alcoholism. The present investigation was designed to determine whether a third criterion of an animal model (i.e., consumption of high levels of alcohol in the presence of a palatable fluid, fulfilled by the P rat) would be met by the female Syrian golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus). BACKGROUND: Drinking motives and protective behavioral strategies have been shown to impact the frequency and quantity of alcohol consumption in young adults, including college students who are at high risk for hazardous drinking. However, how men and women employ different protective behavioral strategies with respect to their drinking motives, and whether these impact drinking patterns differentially, are currently understudied.
METHODS: Data from 109 college students with hazardous drinking patterns were analyzed to examine effects of drinking motives, protective behavioral strategies, sex

Sexual violence is associated with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but relatively less research has explored whether it is associated with hazardous drinking. PTSD symptoms may indirectly influence the association between sexual violence and hazardous alcohol use. This association may be moderated by gender. The aim of the current study was to cross-sectionally test whether sexual violence is indirectly associated with hazardous drinking through PTSD symptoms and explore whether gender moderates this association. Hypotheses were tested among 631 adults ( Mage = 38, 56% men, 78.6% White)

After an extended alcohol-drinking history, alcohol use can transition from controlled to compulsive, causing deleterious consequences. Alcohol use can be segregated into two distinct behaviors, alcohol seeking and alcohol taking. Expression of habitual and compulsive alcohol seeking depends on the dorsolateral striatum (DLS), a brain region thought to engage after extended alcohol access. However, it is unknown whether the DLS is also involved in compulsive-like alcohol taking. The purpose of this experiment was to identify whether the DLS gates compulsive-like binge alcohol drinking. To ask

INTRODUCTION: The extant Alcohol's Harms to Others (AHTO) literature is largely comprised of reports from victims. We investigated AHTO from perpetrators' perspectives, including how harms were associated with individual characteristics, and alcohol quantities consumed during the perpetration incident.
METHODS: Participants (N = 2932) were 14-19 years old, recruited primarily through social media and screened as risky drinkers. They completed face-to-face (n = 594) or self-administered (n = 2338) surveys. They self-reported whether during their last risky drinking session (LRDS) they had perp

The specific content of reported health harms are explored in relation to heavy episodic drinking and alcohol dependence symptoms. A national telephone computer-assisted interview of U.S. adults (N = 635), was conducted in 1994. A modified National Alcohol Survey instrument assessed self-reported health harms and related economic costs and work missed. Among the 579 lifetime drinkers, 26% reported health harms from drinking. In multivariate logistic regression harms relating to intoxication, injuries or internal organs were associated with monthly heavy drinking (5+ drinks) and past dependence

BACKGROUND: The "Color of Drinking" is a study conducted at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. It examines the secondhand harms of high-risk drinking on college students of color and explores the connection between alcohol use and the campus racial climate. Since its findings were released in 2018, this study has received significant attention from other college settings around the country.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to describe the development of the most recent version of the Color of Drinking questionnaire and to assess its internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and construct val

Since each person has a different ability to break down alcohol, it is inappropriate to apply a uniform standard to everyone when evaluating drinking status. In Korea, there has been a guideline for moderate drinking based not only on sex and age but Koreans' alcohol metabolism capabilities that can be predicted by presence of facial flushing response. So far, there have been no studies that have investigated drinking habits of Koreans in accordance with the guideline. This study tried to identify the current drinking status of Koreans according to the guideline. As a result, it was confirmed

Drinking motives are robustly related to alcohol use behavior from adolescence through young adulthood. Yet, examination of changes in motives during the first year of college, a transitional time associated with both onset of and increases in heavy drinking has been understudied. We examined (a) whether drinking motives change, (b) time-varying effects of motives on alcohol use and consequences, and (c) change in the strength of the association between motives and use and motives and consequences over the first year of college. A sample of 121 heavy drinking first-year students (50% female, 5

BACKGROUND: Binge drinking is a significant public health concern linked to a number of health and psychosocial problems. Military service in Afghanistan (OEF) and Iraq (OIF) has been associated with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and increased hazardous drinking. Brief alcohol interventions may reduce hazardous drinking but are infrequently provided to at-risk drinkers.
OBJECTIVES: This study examined the association of combat exposure, PTSD symptoms, binge drinking, use of VA and non-VA healthcare services, and the incidence of provider drinking advice.
METHODS: OEF/OIF veterans (n =

AIM: There is evidence that preoperative carbohydrate drinks and postoperative nutritional supplements improve the outcome of colorectal surgery. There is little information on their individual contribution.
METHOD: A prospective four-arm double-blind controlled trial was carried out in which patients were randomized to carbohydrate or placebo drinks preoperatively and a polymeric supplement or placebo drink postoperatively. The primary outcome was insulin resistance (using the short insulin tolerance test and HOMA-IR). Secondary outcomes included handgrip strength, pulmonary function, intest
