Health economics assessment of statin therapy initiation thresholds for atherosclerosis prevention in China: a cost-effectiveness analysis.

BACKGROUND: Recent updates to the Chinese guidelines for dyslipidemia management have reduced the 10-year risk threshold for starting statins in the primary prevention of atherosclerotic heart disease. This study aims to evaluate the potential negative effects of different statin initiation thresholds on diabetes risk in the Chinese population, while also analyzing their health economic implications. METHODS: I We developed a microsimulation model based on event probabilities to assess the cost-effectiveness of statin therapy. The model utilized the China-PAR prediction tool for ASCVD risk an

One Health Economics approach to prevention and control of zoonotic and animal diseases - considerations for South Africa.

Outbreaks of animal and zoonotic diseases in South Africa are costly and raise concerns about national biosecurity. The interconnectedness of humans, livestock, wildlife and their social and ecological environment necessitates a holistic approach to prevention, preparedness and response to zoonotic and animal diseases. One Health is an increasingly accepted approach in contemporary science and policy spheres, but with limited consideration for economic dimensions. To more fully estimate costs of animal and zoonotic diseases in the country and to explore further scope for applying a One Health

[Application of health economics assessment techniques in the prevention and control of important infectious diseases: a review].

Due to the relative shortage of health resources, rational allocation and utilization of health resources is critical to achieving the maximum economic benefits in developing countries, which requires a health economic assessment to meet the needs to balance the competitive requirements of cost reduction and effectiveness enhancement. This review describes the advances in applications of health economic assessment techniques in four major infectious diseases, including AIDS, tuberculosis, hepatitis B and schistosomiasis. Currently, there is no standard economic assessment in the prevention and

Development of an Initial Conceptual Model of Multiple Myeloma to Support Clinical and Health Economics Decision Making.

Background. We aimed to develop and validate a conceptual model of multiple myeloma (MM) that characterizes the attributes affecting disease progression and patient outcomes, and the relationships between them. Methods. Systematic and targeted literature reviews identified disease- and patient-specific attributes of MM that affect disease progression and outcomes. These attributes were validated by a Delphi panel of four international MM experts, and a physician-validated model was constructed. Real-world clinical data from the Czech Registry of Monoclonal Gammopathies (RMG) was used to confir

The effect of methamphetamine and heroin price on polydrug use: A behavioural economics analysis in Sydney, Australia.

BACKGROUND: A key aim of supply-side drug law enforcement is to reduce drug use by increasing the retail price of drugs. Since most illicit drug users are polydrug users the effectiveness of this strategy depends on the extent to which drug users reduce their overall consumption of drugs. The literature shows that drug users do reduce their consumption of a drug when its price increases. However the extent of that decrease and the implications for the use of other drugs vary across studies. METHODOLOGY: A sample of 101 Australian methamphetamine users was surveyed using a behavioural economic

Faster but Not Truer, Part 2: The Regulatory Record, the Economics, and the TRACE-HEOR Reporting Standard.

BACKGROUND: Part 1 of this series found that measured gains from artificial intelligence (AI) in health economics and outcomes research (HEOR) concentrate in tasks with observable ground truth and disappear where the quantity of interest is a counterfactual. What regulators, health technology assessment (HTA) bodies, and sponsors have said about that division has not been assembled in one place. METHODS: We assembled the primary regulatory, HTA, industry, and journal policy record through September 2026, requiring for each claim a named primary source and, where a quantity was reported, its p

Education as an upstream social security intervention: constructing a competency-based talent development framework in health economics.

Confronted with structural challenges arising from an aging population, rising chronic disease burdens, and inequitable resource allocation, traditional downstream interventions are increasingly inadequate for effective health governance. This study argues that the critical bottleneck lies in a "human capital deficit," where current education fails to equip students with interdisciplinary knowledge and competency to solve complex real-world challenges. To address this, we propose an upstream social security intervention by establishing a competency-based talent development framework in health

Optimizing nitrogen fertilization in mustard through GreenSeeker-based precision agriculture: Impacts on productivity, economics, and environmental sustainability.

Excessive nitrogen (N) fertilization is a major challenge to sustainable agriculture, adversely affecting crop productivity, soil quality, and environmental health, emits a potent greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O), and nearly 80% of sectoral emissions linked to nutrient inputs applied during crop production. The escalating use of N fertilizers further amplifies N2O emissions, undermining soil sustainability and contributing to environmental degradation. So, the hypothesis used behind the study is increasing nitrogen use efficiency from its current level (approx. 30-40%) would reduce the need

A broader perspective on the economics of malaria prevention and the potential impact of SARS-CoV-2.

Economic evaluations of public health interventions to prevent malaria should consider the adoption of wider perspectives and the inclusion of non-health impacts, particularly economic development outcomes, such as education. This is especially relevant in malaria elimination settings and in the context of the current SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.

Economics of the Management of Craniospinal Chordoma and Chondrosarcoma and the feasibility of the bundled payment model.

BACKGROUND: The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) created a new reimbursement model "Bundled Payment for Care Improvement (BPCI)" which reimburses providers a predetermined payment in advance to cover all possible services rendered within a certain time window. Chordoma and Chondrosarcoma are locally aggressive malignant primary bony tumors. Treatment includes surgical resection and radiotherapy with substantial risk for recurrence which necessitates monitoring and further treatment. We assessed the feasibility of the BPCI model in these neurosurgical diseases. METHODS: We sele

Subarachnoid Hemorrhage "Fast Track": A Health Economics and Health Care Redesign Approach for Early Selected Hospital Discharge.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether earlier hospital discharge is feasible and safe in selected patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) using an outpatient "fast-track" protocol. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a prospective quality improvement cohort study with the primary feasibility end point of patients with SAH deemed safe for discharge by treating team consensus. All patients received detailed education and outpatient transcranial Doppler monitoring; caregivers could contact the on-call team 24-7. Primary safety end points were adverse events after discharge and hospital readmission.

The Economics of Antibiotic Cement in Total Knee Arthroplasty: Added Cost with No Reduction in Infection Rates.

BACKGROUND: To reduce the substantial clinical and financial burden of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI), some surgeons advocate for the use of antibiotic-loaded bone cement (ALBC) in primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA), although its effectiveness continues to be debated in the literature. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the routine use of ALBC is cost-effective in reducing PJI after primary TKA. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed a consecutive series of patients undergoing cemented primary TKA at two hospitals within our institution from 2015 to 2017. We compared de

Clarifying the Behavioral Economics of Social Anxiety Disorder: Effects of Interpersonal Problems and Symptom Severity on Generosity.

Social anxiety disorder is associated with lower interpersonal warmth, possibly explaining its associated interpersonal impairment. Across two samples, we attempted to replicate previous findings that the disorder's constraint of interpersonal warmth can be detected via behavioral economic tasks. We also tested the test-retest stability of task indices. Results indicated that factors associated with social anxiety disorder (and not the disorder itself), such as the severity of social anxiety and more extreme interpersonal problems, lead to less generous behavior on the economic task examined.

The economics, financing and implementation of HIV treatment as prevention: what will it take to get there?

The 2013 Lancet Commission Report, Global Health 2035, rightly pointed out that we are at a unique place in history where a "grand convergence" of health initiatives to reduce both infectious diseases, and child and maternal mortality--diseases that still plague low income countries--would yield good returns in terms of development and health outcomes. This would also be a good economic investment. Such investments would support achieving health goals of reducing under-five (U5) mortality to 16 per 1000 live births, reducing deaths due to HIV/AIDS to 8 per 100,000 population, and reducing annu

Beyond neoclassical economics: Social process, agency and the maintenance of order in an Australian illicit drug marketplace.

BACKGROUND: The dominant Australian approaches to understanding illicit drug marketplaces are surveillance and criminological research. These approaches rely on the elementary neoclassical economic model of the market which focuses primarily on supply and demand. In this paper, we draw on anthropological and sociological research to develop an alternative framework for understanding Australian illicit drug marketplaces that emphasises their constituent processes. METHODS: The paper draws on two years of ethnographic research among heroin user/sellers of Vietnamese ethnicity in an Australian h
