Review on the occurrence and biological effects of illicit drugs in aquatic ecosystems.

Illicit drugs (IDs) and their metabolites are recognized as contaminants of emerging concern. After consumption, illicit drugs are partially metabolized and excreted unchanged in urine and feces or as active metabolites reaching wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Furthermore, most WWTPs are insufficient in the treatment of effluents containing IDs, which may be released into aquatic ecosystems. Once in the water or sediment, these substances may interact and affect non-target organisms and some evidences suggest that illicit drugs may exhibit pseudo-persistence because of a continuous enviro

Mercury Exposure in Birds Linked to Marine Ecosystems in the Western Mediterranean.

Mercury (Hg), particularly as methylmercury (MeHg), is a nonessential, persistent, and bioaccumulative toxic element with high biomagnification capacity and is considered a threat to marine environments. We evaluated total Hg concentrations in liver, kidney, and brain in 62 individuals of 9 bird species linked to marine ecosystems from western Mediterranean admitted in a Wildlife Rehabilitation Center (WRC) (Alicante, Spain, 2005-2020). Age- and sex-related differences in Hg levels, as well as the cause of admission to the WRC, were also evaluated in certain species. The species studied were:

Methylmercury Biogeochemistry in Freshwater Ecosystems: A Review Focusing on DOM and Photodemethylation.

Mercury contamination is a growing concern for freshwater food webs in ecosystems without point sources of mercury. Methylmercury (MeHg) is of particular concern, as this is the form of mercury that crosses the blood-brain barrier and is neurotoxic to organisms. Wetlands and benthic sediments have high organic content and low oxygen availability. Anaerobic bacteria drive the metabolic function in these ecosystems and subsequently can methylate mercury. The bioavailability of MeHg is controlled by physicochemical characteristics such as pH, binding affinities, and dissolved organic matter (DOM)

The emergence of Schmallenberg virus across Culicoides communities and ecosystems in Europe.

Schmallenberg virus (SBV), a novel arboviral pathogen, has emerged and spread across Europe since 2011 inflicting congenital deformities in the offspring of infected adult ruminants. Several species of Culicoides biting midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) have been implicated in the transmission of SBV through studies conducted in northern Europe. In this study Culicoides from SBV outbreak areas of mainland France and Italy (Sardinia) were screened for viral RNA. The role of both C. obsoletus and the Obsoletus complex (C. obsoletus and C. scoticus) in transmission of SBV were confirmed in France

Effects of UV radiation on aquatic ecosystems and interactions with climate change.

The health of freshwater and marine ecosystems is critical to life on Earth. The impact of solar UV-B radiation is one potential stress factor that can have a negative impact on the health of certain species within these ecosystems. Although there is a paucity of data and information regarding the effect of UV-B radiation on total ecosystem structure and function, several recent studies have addressed the effects on various species within each trophic level. Climate change, acid deposition, and changes in other anthropogenic stressors such as pollutants alter UV exposure levels in inland and c

Brucellosis at the animal/ecosystem/human interface at the beginning of the 21st century.

Following the recent discovery of new Brucella strains from different animal species and from the environment, ten Brucella species are nowadays included in the genus Brucella. Although the intracellular trafficking of Brucella is well described, the strategies developed by Brucella to survive and multiply in phagocytic and non-phagocytic cells, particularly to access nutriments during its intracellular journey, are still largely unknown. Metabolism and virulence of Brucella are now considered to be two sides of the same coin. Mechanisms presiding to the colonization of the pregnant uterus in

Hazard assessment of commonly used agricultural antibiotics on aquatic ecosystems.

In this study, eleven commonly used antibiotics including sulfonamides, tetracyclines, aminoglycosides, fluoroquinolones, and beta-lactams were evaluated for their acute and chronic aquatic toxicities using standard test organisms e.g., Vibrio fischeri, Daphnia magna, Moina macrocopa, and Oryzias latipes. Among the antibiotics tested for acute toxicity, neomycin was most toxic followed by trimethoprim, sulfamethoxazole and enrofloxacin. Sulfamethazine, oxytetracycline, chlortetracycline, sulfadimethoxine and sulfathiazole were of intermediate toxicity, while ampicillin and amoxicillin were lea

Effects of management and climate on elk brucellosis in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.

Every winter, government agencies feed approximately 6000 metric tons (6 x 10(6) kg) of hay to elk in the southern Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE) to limit transmission of Brucella abortus, the causative agent of brucellosis, from elk to cattle. Supplemental feeding, however, is likely to increase the transmission of brucellosis in elk, and may be affected by climatic factors, such as snowpack. We assessed these possibilities using snowpack and feeding data from 1952 to 2006 and disease testing data from 1993 to 2006. Brucellosis seroprevalence was strongly correlated with the timing of th

Australian ecosystems, capricious food chains and parasitic consequences for people.

Characteristic Australian ecosystems or environments contain numerous food chains some of which may become capriciously side-tracked or appropriated by humans, with parasitic consequences for people in Australia and overseas. Twelve of 13 arboviruses affecting humans are of wildlife origin and all are transmitted by mosquitoes. In this case, transmission is thus associated with aquatic environments, many artificial. Zoonotic trematode (brachylaimiasis) and cestode (rodentoleposis) infections have been reported from semi-arid environments. Scabies and angiostrongylosis are associated with work,

Past changes in Arctic terrestrial ecosystems, climate and UV radiation.

At the last glacial maximum, vast ice sheets covered many continental areas. The beds of some shallow seas were exposed thereby connecting previously separated landmasses. Although some areas were ice-free and supported a flora and fauna, mean annual temperatures were 10-13 degrees C colder than during the Holocene. Within a few millennia of the glacial maximum, deglaciation started, characterized by a series of climatic fluctuations between about 18,000 and 11,400 years ago. Following the general thermal maximum in the Holocene, there has been a modest overall cooling trend, superimposed upon

Metal pollution in Spanish terrestrial ecosystems during the twentieth century.

We show here additional biological evidence of the alteration in global biogeochemistry by human activities during the twentieth century. The mineral concentration of herbarium specimens of 24 species of vascular plants and three species of bryophytes collected in North and East regions of Spain have substantially changed throughout the twentieth century. While V, a proxy tracer of oil pollution, exponentially increased in the last decades, other metals such as Cr, Ba, Sr, Al, Fe, Pb, Cd and Ti increased up to 1960-1970 and started to decrease in 1985-1995, when environmental legal regulations

Concentrations, deposition, and effects of nitrogenous pollutants in selected California ecosystems.

Atmospheric deposition of nitrogen (N) in California ecosystems is ecologically significant and highly variable, ranging from about 1 to 45 kg/ha/year. The lowest ambient concentrations and deposition values are found in the eastern and northern parts of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and the highest in parts of the San Bernardino and San Gabriel Mountains that are most exposed to the Los Angeles air pollution plume. In the Sierra Nevada Mountains, N is deposited mostly in precipitation, although dry deposition may also provide substantial amounts of N. On the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada,

Beyond the germ: Rethinking implant-related infections as a host-microbiota-biomaterial ecosystem.

Implant-related infections remain one of the most challenging complications in modern medicine, often leading to implant failure, revision surgery, significant patient morbidity and high rate of patient mortality. Traditionally framed within the germ theory paradigm, their pathogenesis has been attributed primarily to microbial contamination and biofilm formation. However, growing evidence reveals a far more complex picture in which infection susceptibility emerges from the dynamic interplay between host biology, microbiota composition, biomaterial properties, and environmental influences . The want for Wnt: Pancreatic cancer assembles a self-sustaining Wnt-signaling ecosystem.

In this issue of Developmental Cell, Torborg et al. identify cooperative Wnt signaling between pancreatic cancer cells that is heterogeneous, spatially organized, and required for tumor growth. These results have important implications for our understanding of pancreatic cancer vulnerabilities as well as future treatment approaches targeting the Wnt pathway.

Location and habitat specificity structure benthic microbial assemblages in a temperate seagrass ecosystem.

Seagrass meadows are globally distributed coastal ecosystems that provide habitats for diverse species and facilitate ecosystem services, such as carbon storage and nutrient cycling. However, anthropogenic activities and climate change are causing seagrass decline worldwide, broadly impacting ecosystem functioning. Although macrofaunal communities in seagrass habitats are relatively well studied, benthic microbial assemblages (including microeukaryote groups such as protists and microbial metazoa) remain underexplored. In this study, we used environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding to characteri

Controls on Seasonal Atmosphere-Ecosystem Carbon Dioxide Exchanges in a Temperate Salt Marsh.

Salt marshes play a vital role in the biogeochemistry of coastal zones, yet the biophysical controls on CO2 exchange with the atmosphere, or net ecosystem exchange (NEE, positive upwards) remain poorly quantified. We investigated a Spartina alterniflora monoculture salt marsh on the eastern shore of Virginia, United States, by estimating half-hourly NEE from March 2016 to February 2017 using the eddy-covariance method. Maximum marsh-atmosphere CO2 exchanges occurred during June and July when hourly averaged NEE values reached -10.0 ± 2.5 μmol CO2 m-2 s-1 (mean ±1 standard deviation). During th

InfectoCast: A Digital Ecosystem for Infectious Diseases Education and Science Communication in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Digital platforms have expanded access to continuing medical education (CME), with podcasts and social media increasingly used as asynchronous learning resources. However, most established digital medical education initiatives operate primarily in English, creating linguistic and contextual barriers for professionals in non-Anglophone settings. Infectious diseases (ID) require frequent updating, and access to structured ID-focused CME in middle-income countries such as Brazil remains uneven. InfectoCast is a Brazilian digital initiative that integrates podcasting, social media, and

Ecosystem functions beneath the tide: A trait-based study of tropical intertidal macrobenthos.

The intertidal zone represents a dynamic interface between terrestrial and marine ecosystems, where habitat heterogeneity plays a crucial role in shaping the structure of macrobenthic communities and ecosystem functioning. Traditional taxonomic metrics describe species composition but offer limited insight into how organisms contribute to key processes such as bioturbation, nutrient cycling, and sediment restructuring. Trait-based approaches overcome this limitation by directly linking organismal attributes to ecosystem functions, providing earlier and more mechanistic indicators of ecological
