Cave adaptation drives coordinated transcriptional remodeling across diverse cell types in the brain of a teleost fish.

Adaptation of organisms to extreme environments requires dramatic phenotypic changes. Studying these changes can elucidate mechanisms underlying phenotypic differences in the context of both evolution and human disease. The Mexican tetra, Astyanax mexicanus, is a powerful model of extreme adaptation over a short evolutionary time scale. This fish species includes surface- and cave-dwelling ecotypes, with cavefish displaying many adaptations to subterranean life, including behavioral changes such as sleep loss, increased appetite, and reduced aggression. Unraveling the mechanisms underlying the

Making the Genotypic Variation Visible: Hyperspectral Phenotyping in Scots Pine Seedlings.

Hyperspectral reflectance contains valuable information about leaf functional traits, which can indicate a plant's physiological status. Therefore, using hyperspectral reflectance for high-throughput phenotyping of foliar traits could be a powerful tool for tree breeders and nursery practitioners to distinguish and select seedlings with desired adaptation potential to local environments. We evaluated the use of 2 nondestructive methods (i.e., leaf and proximal/canopy) measuring hyperspectral reflectance in the 350- to 2,500-nm range for phenotyping on 1,788 individual Scots pine seedlings belo

Reevaluating scorpion ecomorphs using a naïve approach.

BACKGROUND: Ecomorphs create the opportunity to investigate ecological adaptation because they encompass organisms that evolved characteristic morphologies under similar ecological demands. For over 50 years, scorpions have been empirically assigned to ecomorphs based on the characteristic morphologies that rock, sand, vegetation, underground, and surface dwellers assume. This study aims to independently test the existence of scorpion ecomorphs by quantifying the association between their morphology and ecology across 61 species, representing 14 families of the Scorpiones order. RESULTS: With

Evolution of Ycf54-independent chlorophyll biosynthesis in cyanobacteria.

Chlorophylls (Chls) are essential cofactors for photosynthesis. One of the least understood steps of Chl biosynthesis is formation of the fifth (E) ring, where the red substrate, magnesium protoporphyrin IX monomethyl ester, is converted to the green product, 3,8-divinyl protochlorophyllide a In oxygenic phototrophs, this reaction is catalyzed by an oxygen-dependent cyclase, consisting of a catalytic subunit (AcsF/CycI) and an auxiliary protein, Ycf54. Deletion of Ycf54 impairs cyclase activity and results in severe Chl deficiency, but its exact role is not clear. Here, we used a Δycf54 mutant

Unraveling the Initial Plant Hormone Signaling, Metabolic Mechanisms and Plant Defense Triggering the Endomycorrhizal Symbiosis Behavior.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi establish probably one of the oldest mutualistic relationships with the roots of most plants on earth. The wide distribution of these fungi in almost all soil ecotypes and the broad range of host plant species demonstrate their strong plasticity to cope with various environmental conditions. AM fungi elaborate fine-tuned molecular interactions with plants that determine their spread within root cortical tissues. Interactions with endomycorrhizal fungi can bring various benefits to plants, such as improved nutritional status, higher photosynthesis, protection a

Early copper-induced leakage of K(+) from Arabidopsis seedlings is mediated by ion channels and coupled to citrate efflux.

Copper tolerance among Arabidopsis ecotypes is inversely correlated with long-term K(+) leakage and positively correlated with short-term K(+) leakage (A. Murphy, L. Taiz [1997] New Phytol 136: 211-222). To probe the mechanism of the early phase of K(+) efflux, we tested various channel blockers on copper and peroxide-induced K(+) efflux from seedling roots. The K(+) channel blockers tetraethyl ammonium chloride and 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) both inhibited short-term copper-induced K(+) efflux. In contrast, peroxide-induced K(+) efflux was insensitive to both tetraethyl ammonium chloride and 4-AP

Induction of stigma-like structures in saffron (Crocus sativus L.): Exploring factors and metabolite analysis.

Saffron (Crocus sativus L.) has held significant cultural and medicinal value since the Greek-Minoan civilization. As a triploid spice with vegetative propagation from the Iridaceae family, the three-branch style of C. sativus flowers, known as saffron, constitutes the most economically valuable part of the plant, renowned for its diverse medicinal properties. This study explores the in vitro induction of stigma-like structures (SLSs) from various explants of the Ghaen ecotype flower. The study found that the optimal sampling time for the majority of explants was the third week of October. Ova

Amazonian waters harbour an ancient freshwater Ceratomyxa lineage (Cnidaria: Myxosporea).

A new species of Ceratomyxa parasitizing the gall bladder of Cichla monoculus, an endemic cichlid fish from the Amazon basin in Brazil, is described using morphological and molecular data. In the bile, both immature and mature myxospores were found floating freely or inside elongated plasmodia: length 304 (196-402) μm and width 35.7 (18.3-55.1) μm. Mature spores were elongated and only slightly crescent-shaped in frontal view with a prominent sutural line between two valve cells, which had rounded ends. Measurements of formalin-fixed myxospores: length 6.3±0.6 (5.1-7.5) μm, thickness 41.2±2.9

FeM-ID: a biotin labeling-based approach for the dissection of female meiotic chromosome behavior in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Meiosis assures formation of both male and female gametes. However, cytological studies of female meiotic chromosome behavior in plants are scarce, mainly due to the comparatively low number and inaccessibility of female meiotic cells. We present Female Meiotic cell IDentification (FeM-ID), an approach for cytological identification of female meiotic cells in Arabidopsis. By employing ASY1-eYFP-TurboID, female meiotic cells (chromatin and cytoplasm) are specifically labeled by biotin. This facilitates their rapid microscopic identification and detailed assessment of female meiotic chromosome b

Arbuscular mycorrhizae in metalliferous and aluminum-rich soils.

Metalliferous and aluminium (Al)-rich soils represent restrictive terrestrial environments where high concentrations of potentially toxic elements act as edaphic filters on plant communities. Since arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis can alleviate several environmental constraints, it may play an important role in plant performance in metalliferous and Al-rich soils. Here, we review current knowledge on the mechanisms and ecological relevance of AM symbiosis in naturally metalliferous and Al-rich ecosystems worldwide. Available evidence indicates that AM fungi (AMF) mitigate both trace metal

Comparative role of betalains and other key antioxidant metabolites in the photoprotection against acute exposure to UV-B radiation in Chenopodium quinoa and C. berlandieri seedlings.

Chenopodium quinoa Willd. is a betalainic crop with remarkable tolerance to extreme environmental conditions. Despite numerous varieties grow at high altitudes, where UV-B radiation is intense, research on the effects of UV-B stress on this and related species is very scarce. In the present work we aimed to determine whether UV-B radiation induces the production of betalains, and evaluated the role of these pigments and other key antioxidants in preventing oxidative damage, in seedlings of C. quinoa (ecotypes CICA and Villarrica) and its close relative C. berlandieri Moq., grown in darkness an

Identification and Spatiotemporal Expression of a Putative New GABA Receptor Subunit in the Human Body Louse Pediculus humanus humanus.

The human louse (Pediculus humanus) is an obligatory blood feeding ectoparasite with two ecotypes: the human body louse (Pediculus humanus humanus), a competent vector of several bacterial pathogens, and the human head louse (Pediculus humanus capitis), responsible for pediculosis and affecting millions of people around the globe. GABA (γ-aminobutyric acid) receptors, members of the cys-loop ligand gated ion channel superfamily, are among the main pharmacological targets for insecticides. In insects, there are four subunits of GABA receptors: resistant-to-dieldrin (RDL), glycin-like receptor o

Multi-environment evaluations across ecological regions reveal climate and soil effects on amides contents in Chinese prickly ash peels (Zanthoxylum bungeanum Maxim.).

BACKGROUND: Environmental factors difference is the key factor for the difference in the production, transformation and accumulation of effective components in plants. UPLC-MS/MS and multivariate statistical methods were applied to describe the region difference of amides compounds in Chinese prickly ash peels from different regions and their correlation with climatic factors and soil factors. RESULTS: Amides compounds contents were significantly higher in high altitude areas, with obvious altitude change trend. Two ecotypes were classified based on the amides compounds contents, one was the

Genomic differentiation in Pacific cod using Pool-Seq.

Patterns of genetic differentiation across the genome can provide insight into selective forces driving adaptation. We used pooled whole genome sequencing, gene annotation, and environmental covariates to evaluate patterns of genomic differentiation and to investigate mechanisms responsible for divergence among proximate Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus) populations from the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands and more distant Washington Coast cod. Samples were taken from eight spawning locations, three of which were replicated to estimate consistency in allele frequency estimation. A kernel smoot

Predictors and risk factors for the intestinal shedding of Escherichia coli O157 among working donkeys (Equus asinus) in Nigeria.

OBJECTIVES: Escherichia coli are an important group of bacteria in the normal gastrointestinal system but can sometimes cause infections in domestic animals and man. Donkeys are routinely used as multipurpose animal but details of burdens of potentially infectious bacteria associated with it are limited. The prevalence and associations between intestinal shedding of E. coli O157 and animal characteristics and management factors were studied among 240 randomly selected working donkeys in north-western Nigeria. DESIGN: Four local government areas, of Sokoto State in north-western Nigeria were r

From reservoirs to ecological integrators: the role of European Apodemus spp. in vector-borne zoonotic pathogens.

Rodents of the genus Apodemus are among the most widespread and abundant small mammals in Europe and play a central role in the ecology of numerous zoonotic pathogens. Owing to their ecological plasticity, high population densities, and frequent infestation by arthropod vectors, Apodemus species contribute to the maintenance and transmission of a diverse array of bacterial, viral, and protozoan agents of public health concern. This narrative review synthesises current knowledge on vector-borne pathogens associated with European Apodemus spp. and highlights marked heterogeneity in species-speci

Salicylic acid-related cotton (Gossypium arboreum) ribosomal protein GaRPL18 contributes to resistance to Verticillium dahliae.

BACKGROUND: Verticillium dahliae is a phytopathogenic fungal pathogen that causes vascular wilt diseases responsible for considerable decreases in cotton yields. The complex mechanism underlying cotton resistance to Verticillium wilt remains uncharacterized. Identifying an endogenous resistance gene may be useful for controlling this disease. RESULTS: We cloned the ribosomal protein L18 (GaRPL18) gene, which mediates resistance to Verticillium wilt, from a wilt-resistant cotton species (Gossypium arboreum). We then characterized the function of this gene in cotton and Arabidopsis thaliana pla

Seasonal presence, movements and behaviour of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) in Isfjorden, Svalbard.

Atlantification is increasing the inflow of warm, salty Atlantic water into the Arctic region. The fjords on the western coast of Svalbard are experiencing Atlantification, enabling boreal species, such as Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua), to expand their distribution northwards. Monitoring the seasonal occurrence and behaviour of species like Atlantic cod in Arctic fjords is therefore key for understanding how ocean warming may restructure Arctic ecosystems and affect native prey species like polar cod (Boreogadus saida), supporting improved management under climate change. By using acoustic telem
