Sex steroid dynamics and mRNA transcript profiles of growth- and development-related genes during embryogenesis following induced follicular maturation in European eel.

Hormones and mRNA transcripts of maternal origin deposited in the egg may affect early embryonic development in oviparous species. These hormones include steroids, such as estradiol-17β (E2), testosterone (T), 11-ketotestosterone (11-kt), 17α,20ß-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (DHP), and cortisol, which also play an important role in fish reproduction. In European eel, Anguilla anguilla, which does not reproduce naturally in captivity, vitellogenesis in female broodstock is commonly induced by administration of salmon or carp pituitary extract (PE) as an exogenous source of gonadotropins, while fol

A new genus of proteocephalid tapeworm (Cestoda) from the marbled swamp eel Synbranchus marmoratus Bloch (Synbranchiformes: Synbranchidae) in the River Paraná basin, Argentina.

Synbranchiella gen. n. is proposed to accommodate Synbranchiella mabelae sp. n. (Proteocephalidae: Monticelliinae) from the intestine of the marbled swamp eel Synbranchus marmoratus Bloch, in the River Colastiné, a tributary of the middle River Paraná in Argentina. The new genus is placed in the Monticelliinae because of the cortical position of the genital organs. It differs from all known monticelliine genera by the following combination of characters: (i) scolex robust, with a conical apex, without metascolex; (ii) biloculate suckers with a conspicuous septum separating unequally-sized locu

Hybrid siamese heterogeneous convolutional neural networks with electric eel foraging optimization-based deep feature vectors concatenation for eye disease detection.

In order to prevent vision loss and blindness, eye problems must be identified and diagnosed. In order to avoid blindness and vision loss, it is crucial to identify the main cause of eye illness. In previous studies, several DL algorithms have been used for detecting eye disease but do not provide sufficient results. To overcome these challenges is suggested. In this publication, a Hybrid Siamese Heterogeneous Convolutional Neural Network with Electric eel foraging optimization-based Deep Feature Vectors Concatenation for Eye Disease Detection (DeepSiaHetCNN-EeFOA) is suggested. There are data

Low-frequency alternating electric field superchilling mitigates ice crystal growth and preserves taste quality in Asian swamp eel (Monopterus albus).

This study investigated the effects of low-frequency alternating electric field-assisted superchilling (ESF) on the quality of Asian swamp eels. Compared to conventional superchilling (SF), ESF treatment significantly reduced ice crystal size, decreasing the equivalent diameters and cross-sectional areas by 19.6% and 35.5%, respectively, at day 8, while maintaining more regular crystal morphology. ESF also effectively suppressed the conversion of immobilized water to free water, delayed umami loss, and mitigated bitterness development, as confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance and electronic

Integrated Transcriptome Landscape of mRNAs, lncRNAs, circRNAs, and miRNAs Reveals Molecular Regulatory Networks of Sex Differentiation in the Zig-Zag Eel (Mastacembelus armatus).

The zig-zag eel (Mastacembelus armatus) exhibits sexual dimorphism in growth patterns. Identifying the genes involved in sex differentiation is a crucial step toward achieving single-sex breeding and serves as a vital foundation for elucidating the XY sex determination mechanism in M. armatus. This study measured the morphological characteristics of male and female M. armatus and found that males were significantly superior to females in body weight and nearly all morphological indices. Subsequently, whole-transcriptome sequencing was performed on the gonads of adult males and females, identif

Dietary arachidonic acid improves the growth performance, anti-oxidant capacity and ovary development of female rice field eel broodstocks (Monopterus albus).

Arachidonic acid (ARA) is crucial for the growth, antioxidant capacity, and reproductive performance of fish. This study was conducted to assess the impact of dietary ARA on female rice field eel (Monopterus albus) broodstocks. A total of 600 eels, averaging 117.96 ± 3.65 g, were randomly distributed into 12 tanks, with each tank containing 50 fish. Four isonitrogenous and isolipidic diets comprising 0, 0.50%, 1.00%, and 1.50% ARA were formulated and fed to experimental fish for 10 weeks. Weight gain rates (WGR) increased significantly in 0.50% and 1.00% ARA groups compared to the control (ANO

Spatiotemporal expression of activin receptor-like kinase-5 and bone morphogenetic protein receptor type II in the ovary of shortfinned eel, Anguilla australis.

In the eel ovary, the expression of growth differentiation factor-9 (Gdf9) appears to be largely confined to the germ cell in early stages of oogenesis. However, both the target tissue and the function of Gdf9 in fish remain unknown. This study aimed to describe the abundance and localization of activin receptor-like kinase-5 (Alk5) and bone morphogenetic protein receptor type II (Bmpr2), which together mediate the Gdf9 signal, in the ovary of a basal teleost, the shortfinned eel, Anguilla australis, during early folliculogenesis. The cDNA encoding eel alk5 and bmpr2 genes were cloned, charact

Effect of intracerebroventricular administration of rat calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), human calcitonin and [Asu1,7]-eel calcitonin on gastric acid secretion in rats.

The effect of intracerebroventricular injection of rat calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), human calcitonin (CT) and [Asu1,7]-eel CT on the volume and acidity of gastric juice was examined in the pylorus-ligated male rats. These 3 peptides were effective in suppressing both the volume and acidity of secreted gastric juice. Their potency on a molar basis, however, was markedly different; [Asu1,7]-eel CT was most potent, followed by human CT and finally by rat CGRP. These finding suggest that CGRP could not substitute for [Asu1,7]-eel or human CT in exerting the suppressive effect of gastric

Lipoprotein biology during induced oogenesis in the short-finned eel, Anguilla australis-hepatic target gene expression and accumulation of nutrient sources into developing oocytes.

Production of good quality eggs still plagues mass propagation efforts of anguillid eels. Understanding the lipid dynamics of artificially maturing eels will inevitably benefit captive rearing practices due to the importance of lipids for egg quality. Fortnightly sampling of shortfinned eels (Anguilla australis) subjected to hypophysation for 10 weeks allowed us to gather important information relating to multiple aspects of lipid physiology. Accordingly, expected increases in gonadosomatic (from 2.20 ± 0.14 to 23.20 ± 6.01%) and hepatic somatic indices (from 0.89 ± 0.04 to 1.93 ± 0.01%), as w

Circular RNA expression profiles and CircSnd1-miR-135b/c-foxl2 axis analysis in gonadal differentiation of protogynous hermaphroditic ricefield eel Monopterus albus.

BACKGROUND: The expression and biological functions of circular RNAs (circRNAs) in reproductive organs have been extensively reported. However, it is still unclear whether circRNAs are involved in sex change. To this end, RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) was performed in gonads at 5 sexual stages (ovary, early intersexual stage gonad, middle intersexual stage gonad, late intersexual stage gonad, and testis) of ricefield eel, and the expression profiles and potential functions of circRNAs were studied. RESULTS: Seven hundred twenty-one circRNAs were identified, and the expression levels of 10 circRNAs

A complete check-up of European eel after eight years of restocking in an upland river: Trends in growth, lipid content, sex ratio and health status.

By combining field research and careful laboratory analysis of samples over the course of an eight-year study, we met the challenge of assessing the life history traits and health status of eels restocked in freshwater ecosystems. We found that restocked eels exhibited good growth performance; moreover, the stocks were female-dominated, showed a good Fulton's condition factor (K) and lipid stores and had high survival probability estimated using the best model of Jolly-Seber stock assessment method for open populations. A necropsy revealed the absence of internal lesions. A swim bladder examin

High-resolution structure of the conger eel galectin, congerin I, in lactose-liganded and ligand-free forms: emergence of a new structure class by accelerated evolution.

BACKGROUND: Congerin I is a member of the galectin (animal beta-galactoside-binding lectin) family and is found in the skin mucus of conger eel. The galectin family proteins perform a variety of biological activities. Because of its histological localization and activity against marine bacteria and starfish embryos, congerin I is thought to take part in the eels' biological defense system against parasites. RESULTS: The crystal structure of congerin I has been determined in both lactose-liganded and ligand-free forms to 1. 5 A and 1.6 A resolution, respectively. The protein is a homodimer of

Identification and In Silico Selection of Novel Antioxidant Peptides from Asian Swamp Eel Bone: Quantum Chemical Calculations, Molecular Docking, and Zebrafish Model Validation.

Fourteen novel antioxidant peptides were screened from the enzymatic hydrolysates of Asian swamp eel bone (ASEB) through an in silico analysis. Their ABTS and ORAC radical scavenging capacities were 1.70-4.29-fold and 2.79-5.90-fold higher than those of Trolox, respectively. Additionally, two novel peptide sequences (NVGW and WALN) were identified. Quantum chemical calculations combined with active--site methylation experiments demonstrated that hydrogen atoms on tryptophan's indole nitrogen, tyrosine's phenolic hydroxyl, and arginine's guanidinium group play crucial roles in enhancing ABTS an

Angiotensin-I-converting enzyme inhibitory peptides from eel (Anguilla japonica) bone collagen: preparation, identification, molecular docking, and protective function on HUVECs.

INTRODUCTION: Hypertension is a chronic cardiovascular disease, which can trigger some disease such as heart failure, loss of vision or kidney. There were various peptides derived from food that are recognized for their ability to inhibit ACE activity, potentially leading to a reduction in blood pressure levels in vivo. The primary objective of this research is to discover ACE inhibitory peptides from protein hydrolysates of eel bone collagen (EBCHs). METHODS: To begin, EBCHs were created and then divided through the process of ultrafiltration. The second step involved screening of peptides c

Insights into the mechanism of growth and fat deposition by feeding different levels of lipid provided by transcriptome analysis of swamp eel (Monopterus albus, Zuiew 1793) liver.

Lipid is an important source of energy in fish feeds, and the appropriate fat content can improve the efficiency of protein utilization. However, excessive lipid content in the feed can lead to abnormal fat deposition in fish, which has a negative effect on the growth of fish. Therefore, the effects of feed lipid levels on swamp eel were studied. Essential functional genes were screened using transcriptomics. We divided 840 fish into seven groups (four replicates). A mixture of fish and soybean oils (1:4), 0%, 2%, 4%, 6%, 8%, 10%, and 12% was added to the basic feed were named groups one to se

Identification and expression analysis of thyroid-stimulating hormone β subunit, and effects of T3 on gonadal differentiation-related gene expression in rice field eel, Monopterus albus.

Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) is an important glycoprotein in hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis, which plays a crucial role in the synthesis and release of thyroid hormones in vertebrates. Rice field eel, Monopterus albus, a protogynous hermaphroditic fish, which undergoes sex reversal from a functional female to a male, is an ideal model to investigate the regulation of sex differentiation. In this study, we obtained the cDNA sequence of thyroid-stimulating hormone β subunit (tshβ) from rice field eel, which contained a complete open reading frame and encoded a putative protein of 151 a
