Prevalence of asthma, rhinitis, and eczema in Northern Thai children from Chiang Mai (International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood, ISAAC).

The Phase One International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) was developed for geographical and temporal comparisons of the prevalence and severity of asthma and allergic diseases in childhood within and between countries. In Thailand, a study was carried out in Bangkok and this is a further study undertaken in Chiang Mai. Using the ISAAC questionnaire, schoolchildren of two age groups were studied: 6-7 years old (n = 3,828) and 13-14 years old (n = 3,927). The data were entered and analyzed using the Epi-info computer program. The prevalence over the past 12 months, in 6-7 a

Measuring compliance among oral contraceptive users.

Irregular use of the pill compromises the effectiveness of this highly reliable method. The consistency of pill-taking has traditionally been estimated through women's own reports of their patterns of pill use. In this study, self-reported data on pill-taking were compared with data from an electronic device measuring compliance among 103 women attending university health services and publicly funded family planning clinics. In three months of pill use, the electronic and self-reported data agreed on the number of days when pills were missed only 45% of the time; the level of agreement dropped

Automated Identification of Clinical Procedures in Free-Text Electronic Clinical Records with a Low-Code Named Entity Recognition Workflow.

BACKGROUND: Clinical procedures are often performed in outpatient clinics without prior scheduling at the administrative level, and documentation of the procedure often occurs solely in free-text clinical electronic notes. Natural language processing (NLP), particularly named entity recognition (NER), may provide a solution to extracting procedure data from free-text electronic notes. METHODS: Free-text notes from outpatient ophthalmology visits were collected from the electronic clinical records at a single institution over 3 months. The Prodigy low-code annotation tool was used to create an

The use of natural language processing for the identification of ageing syndromes including sarcopenia, frailty and falls in electronic healthcare records: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Recording and coding of ageing syndromes in hospital records is known to be suboptimal. Natural Language Processing algorithms may be useful to identify diagnoses in electronic healthcare records to improve the recording and coding of these ageing syndromes, but the feasibility and diagnostic accuracy of such algorithms are unclear. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review according to a predefined protocol and in line with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Searches were run from the inception of each database to the end of Se

Automatic optic disc segmentation with peripapillary atrophy elimination.

Optic disc segmentation from retinal fundus image is a fundamental but important step for automatic glaucoma diagnosis. In this paper, an optic disc segmentation method is proposed based on peripapillary atrophy elimination. The elimination is done through edge filtering, constraint elliptical Hough transform and peripapillary atrophy detection. With the elimination, edges that are likely from non-disc structures especially peripapillary atrophy are excluded to make the segmentation more accurate. The proposed method has been tested in a database of 650 images with disc boundaries marked by tr

Myocardium segmentation from DE MRI with guided random walks and sparse shape representation.

PURPOSE: For patients with myocardial infarction (MI), delayed enhancement (DE) cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a sensitive and well-validated technique for the detection and visualization of MI. The myocardium viability assessment with DE MRI is important in diagnosis and treatment management, where myocardium segmentation is a prerequisite. However, few academic works have focused on automated myocardium segmentation from DE images. In this study, we aim to develop an automatic myocardium segmentation algorithm that targets DE images. METHODS: We propose a segmentation fr

A calorie-restricted diet decreases brain iron accumulation and preserves motor performance in old rhesus monkeys.

Caloric restriction (CR) reduces the pathological effects of aging and extends the lifespan in many species, including nonhuman primates, although the effect on the brain is less well characterized. We used two common indicators of aging, motor performance speed and brain iron deposition measured in vivo using magnetic resonance imaging, to determine the potential effect of CR on elderly rhesus macaques eating restricted (n=24, 13 males, 11 females) and standard (n=17, 8 males, 9 females) diets. Both the CR and control monkeys showed age-related increases in iron concentrations in globus palli

Multimodal detection of sleep apnoea using electrocardiogram and oximetry signals.

A method for the detection of sleep apnoea, suitable for use in the home environment, is presented. The method automatically analyses night-time electrocardiogram (ECG) and oximetry recordings and identifies periods of normal and sleep-disordered breathing (SDB). The SDB is classified into one of six classes: obstructive, mixed and central apnoeas, and obstructive, mixed and central hypopnoeas. It also provides an estimated apnoea, hypopnoea and apnoea-hypopnoea index. The basis of the method is a pattern recognition system that identifies episodes of apnoea by analysing the heart variability,

Electrochemical Sensors as a Tool for Taste Perception in Pharmaceutical Products: Advances and Perspectives.

Taste masking in pharmaceutical products is a complex and subjective process that requires reliable evaluation methods. This review focuses on the electronic tongue (e-tongue), an emerging sensor-based technology designed to mimic human taste perception without the need for human panels. E-tongue systems provide objective data to support the development of palatable formulations. In this review, we discuss the principles, types of e-tongue devices, data processing approaches, and their applications in pharmaceutical research. By comparing e-tongue performance with human taste assessment, we hi

A knowledge-based alarm system for monitoring cardiac operated patients--technical construction and evaluation.

A knowledge-based alarm system for intensive care monitoring was designed, built, tested on-line, and evaluated. The system is a functional prototype of a highly specific patient monitor providing alarms on hypovolemia, hyperdynamic state, left ventricular failure and hypoventilation. These intelligent alarm functions aim to maintain the quality of patient monitoring even if nurses' attention is temporarily reduced or focused elsewhere. The alarm system has an electronic access to data available in a multichannel patient monitor and the patient data management system of the intensive care unit

An electronic regulatory document management system for a clinical trial network.

A computerized regulatory document management system has been developed as a module in a comprehensive Clinical Trial Management System (CTMS) designed for an NIH-funded clinical trial network in order to more efficiently manage and track regulatory compliance. Within the network, several institutions and investigators are involved in multiple trials, and each trial has regulatory document requirements. Some of these documents are trial specific while others apply across multiple trials. The latter causes a possible redundancy in document collection and management. To address these and other r

The Evolving Use of Electronic Health Records (EHR) for Research.

Electronic health records (EHR) have been implemented successfully in a majority of United States healthcare systems in some form. There has been a rise in secondary uses of EHR, especially for research. EHR data is large, heterogenous, incomplete, noisy, and primarily created for purposes other than research. This presents many challenges, many of which are beginning to be overcome with the application of computer science artificial intelligence techniques, such as natural language processing and machine learning. EHR are gradually being redesigned to facilitate future research, though we are

Personalised physical exercise regime for chronic patients through a wearable ICT platform.

Today's state of the art in exercise physiology, professional athletics and sports practice in general clearly shows that the best results depend on the personalisation and continuous update of the recommendations provided to an athlete training, a sports lover or a person whose medical condition demands regular physical exercise. The vital signs information gathered in telemonitoring systems can be better evaluated and exploited if processed along with data from the subject's electronic health records, training history and performance statistics. In this context, the current paper intends to

Towards reliable long-term environmental odour monitoring with electronic noses: compensation of humidity and sensor drift effects.

Implementation of electronic noses at the fenceline of industrial plants is becoming relevant in order to monitor odour emissions from these facilities. Literature studies proved the applicability of these instruments for this purpose; however, their application over long period of time is hindered by the presence of interferences. We propose the application of two pre-processing strategies to compensate the presence of humidity variations and sensor drift, two interferents commonly found in uncontrolled sampling systems. We validated the methodology on two electronic noses installed at the fe

[A modified speech enhancement algorithm for electronic cochlear implant and its digital signal processing realization].

In order to improve the speech quality and auditory perceptiveness of electronic cochlear implant under strong noise background, a speech enhancement system used for electronic cochlear implant front-end was constructed. Taking digital signal processing (DSP) as the core, the system combines its multi-channel buffered serial port (McBSP) data transmission channel with extended audio interface chip TLV320AIC10, so speech signal acquisition and output with high speed are realized. Meanwhile, due to the traditional speech enhancement method which has the problems as bad adaptability, slow converg
