Anatomy, embryology, and imaging of situs ambiguous with polysplenia and left IVC.

The situs ambiguous or heterotaxy syndrome is a type of syndrome that involves multiple visceral abnormalities, vascular ones and associated with left isomerism. Malformation of gastroenterologic system includes polysplenia (segmented spleen or multiple splenules), agenesis (partial or complete) of the dorsal pancreas and anomalous of the inferior vena cava implantation. Here, we describe and show the anatomy of a patient with left side inferior vena cava, situs ambiguous (complete common mesentery), polysplenia, and short pancreas. We also discuss about the embryologic process and the implica

The importance of embryology for parents of children with congenital hand differences.

This study aimed to determine whether embryology knowledge or explaining the possible developmental pathway error was important for parents of affected children, and to secondarily determine if there was a relationship between desired knowledge of embryology and disease severity, maternal age group or maternal level of education. Using a self-administered questionnaire, a significant proportion of responding parents considered knowledge of embryology important (32 out of 43). We found a significant association between the importance of embryology knowledge for parents and the disease severity.

Embryology, anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology of the peritoneum and the peritoneal vasculature.

The peritoneum is a large serous membrane with both epithelial and mesenchymal features, and is essential for maintaining an intra-abdominal homeostatic equilibrium. The peritoneum plays a central role in the pathogenesis of a number of disorders. Pathological processes affecting the peritoneum such as inflammation and carcinomatosis can have serious clinical consequences, but the pathophysiology of these conditions is poorly understood. Understanding peritoneal embryology, anatomy and physiology is crucial to comprehend pathophysiological mechanisms and to devise a new focus for research. The

Zinner Syndrome: A Diagnostic Challenge. The Aid of Morphology, Embryology, and Immunohistochemistry.

We investigate a patient with right kidney agenesis. Imaging showed the presence of a cystic mass dislocating the bladder. The specimen showed three formations: a kidney remnant, a ureter with blind-ending branch, and a cyst, from which departed another tubular structure, considered the deferential duct. The specimen was sampled. The supposed kidney was formed by cystic structures. Examination of the tubular structures disclosed smooth muscle fibers with no lumen, whereas the cyst was surrounded by fibrous and hemorrhagic walls. Collaboration among specialists allowed the diagnosis of Zinner s

Anatomy and embryology of umbilicus in newborns: a review and clinical correlations.

Umbilicus is considered a mirror of the abdomen in newborns. Despite its importance, the umbilicus has been stated in literature and textbooks as discrete subjects with many body systems, such as the urinary, digestive, and cardiovascular ones. This article aimed to address the basic knowledge of the umbilicus in relation to clinical disorders under one integrated topic to aid physicians and surgeons in assessing newborns and infants. The umbilicus appears as early as the fourth week of fetal life when the folding of the embryonic plate occurs. The umbilicus appears initially as a primitive um

From anatomy to laparoscopic surgery, or how to reconcile surgeons to embryology.

PURPOSE: With the development of laparoscopy, new surgical techniques for colon resection were required. New anatomic plans of dissection were described for laparoscopic technique (medial to lateral approach) and the surgeons had to learn a complete different anatomy known as "laparoscopic anatomy". To help the surgeon through the milestones of laparoscopic colon resection, we propose an embryological and anatomical analysis of the changes of the colon and peritoneum during the foetal period to highlight the laparoscopic approach and surgical landmarks. METHODS: Seventeen human foetuses, age

[Meibomian glands. Part I: anatomy, embryology and histology of the Meibomian glands].

The Meibomian glands are large sebaceous glands that are located as separate gland strands in parallel arrangement within the tarsal plates of the eyelids. Their oily product (meibum) is secreted by a holocrine mechanism during which the secretory cells (meibocytes) are completely transformed into the meibum after synthesis and accumulation of lipids. After production in the gland acini, meibum is transported through the ductal system via the connecting duct (ductule) and the central duct towards the orifice at the free lid margin close to the inner lid border. The embryological development of

Persistent mullerian duct syndrome and transverse testicular ectopia: embryology, presentation, and management.

BACKGROUND: The finding of persistent mullerian duct syndrome (PMDS) with transverse testicular ectopia (TTE) is rare. We present nonidentical triplets with PMDS with TTE. CASES: Triplet A presented with a right inguinal hernia and left nonpalpable testis at 4 months of age. Ultrasound demonstrated 1 testis in the right hemiscrotum. Laparoscopy revealed both testes in the right inguinal canal with a thick midline structure. Triplet B presented at 6 months of age in the exact manner with similar intraoperative findings as triplet A. No additional mullerian structures were identified in triplet

Embryology of congenital ventriculo-coronary communications: a study on quail-chick chimeras.

Ventriculo-coronary arterial communications are rare congenital heart defects which have been explained traditionally on the basis of abnormal persistence of such communications found in the normal developing heart. Recent studies, however, have suggested that these embryonic communications might be an incidental finding rather than a normal feature. Thus, it has been suggested that congenital ventriculo-coronary communications do not represent remnants of normal embryonic vessels, but rather represent acquired lesions. In the present study, hearts were constructed in embryonic chicks in which

Theoretical and analytical embryology of conjoined twins: part II: adjustments to union.

A previous report in this journal (Spencer, 2000) discussed the probable embryologic etiology of conjoined twins, along with a system of classification based on the embryological structures postulated to be involved in the union. Part II correlates and compares the variations in the abnormal development of the individual organ systems in more than 1,200 actual cases, revealing details of embryogenesis not considered in previous publications. The site, incidence, and range of anomalies in the conjoined structures, as well as the associated malformations, follow a definite pattern as the union p

Congenital Anomalies of the Nose: From Embryologic to Surgical Treatment.

The nose, a facial organ, not only plays a crucial role in olfaction and respiration but also has a major impact on the overall anatomy of the face. However, congenital anomalies affecting the nose can be challenging as they require both functional impairments and cosmetic concerns. Facial maldevelopments during the early embryonic period induce a wide-ranging nasal deformity. Understanding the etiology of these anomalies is essential for healthcare professionals involved in diagnosis, treatment, and management. Based on current literature, this review aims to present the spectrum of congenita

Embryological Significance of Glial cells in the Central Nervous System.

Glial cells are essential for the proper functioning of the nervous system, categorized into two groups: macroglial and microglia. Traditionally viewed as passive entities involved in nutrition, support, and insulation, recent insights reveal their crucial role in brain function and plasticity. They serve as key regulators of synaptic activity, influencing information transmission between neurons and impacting processes like learning. Glial cells are vital for maintaining neuronal network integrity and functionality; disruptions in their function can lead to neuronal dysfunction and death. Our

Embryologic and Fetal Development of the Eyelid and the Lacrimal Drainage System.

The embryological and fetal morphogenesis of the eyelids and lacrimal drainage system is multifactorial and complex. This protracted process begins in the 5th week of prenatal life and involves a successive series of subtle and tightly regulated morphogenetic events. Major milestones of the embryological and fetal development of the eyelids include the beginning of eyelid formation during the 6th week, eyelid fusion by the 8th week, and the development of eyelid structures beginning in the 9th week (immediately following eyelid fusion), with progression until eyelid separation by the 24th week

Limited Dorsal Myeloschisis: Reconsideration of its Embryological Origin.

BACKGROUND: Limited dorsal myeloschisis (LDM) is postulated to be a result of incomplete dysjunction in primary neurulation. However, clinical experience of LDM located below the first-second sacral (S1-S2) vertebral level, which is formed from secondary neurulation (S2-coccyx), suggested that LDM may not be entirely explained as an error of primary neurulation. OBJECTIVE: To elucidate the location and characteristics of LDM to investigate the possible relation of its pathoembryogenesis to secondary neurulation. METHODS: Twenty-eight patients were surgically treated for LDM from 2010 to 2015

The intravesical phallus in patients with cloacal exstrophy: An embryologic conundrum.

BACKGROUND: Phalluses present inside the extrophied bladder of cloacal exstrophy (CE) newborns have been sporadically reported in the literature; this clinical entity has largely unknown origins and may represent an extremely rare anomaly of CE. OBJECTIVE: Along with nearly doubling the number of reported intravesical phalluses in the literature, this study aims to outline the common anatomic features and discuss the implications for theories of CE embryogenesis. STUDY DESIGN: The authors retrospectively identified patients with CE and a potential intravesical phallus between 1997 and 2017 a

Calreticulin in the Heart: From Embryological Development to Cardiac Pathology.

BACKGROUND: Calreticulin is a Ca(2+)-binding chaperone in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) which is crucial to the correct embryological development of the heart in mice. Altered expression levels in the adult were correlated with several cardiac pathologies such as cardiac hypertrophy and dilated cardiomyopathy. AIM: In this review, we aim to describe the role of calreticulin in the embryological development of the heart in mice and to clarify the relationship between the different cardiac pathologies and altered expression levels of calreticulin in the adult heart. CONCLUSION: There is an ER

Morphometry of posterior cerebral artery: embryological and clinical significance.

Posterior cerebral artery, terminal branch of basilar artery joins the posterior communicating artery to help complete the circulus arteriosus cerebri in human beings. A study of 89 formalin-fixed brain specimen of either sex and of Indian origin has showed that the mean length and diameter of the posterior cerebral artery was 6.75 +/- 1.482 mm and 1.7 +/- 0.7 mm respectively. Anomalous origin of the posterior cerebral artery was the only variation found during the present study. The incidence of occurrence of the particular variant was 2.2%. The variation did not have any sex or side predilec
