Extant research has supported a connection between socialization in childhood and difficulties regulating emotions. The biosocial theory of borderline personality disorder (BPD; Crowell, Beauchaine, & Linehan, 2009; Linehan, 1993) suggests that emotion dysregulation is a core mechanism underlying the extreme behaviors, mood instability, identity disturbance, and relationship instability observed in BPD. The present study investigated the impact of socialization factors related to emotions, parental autonomy support, parental psychological control, and childhood trauma on BPD features in a nonc

Emotion regulation has an important role in child development and psychopathology. Reappraisal as cognitive regulation technique can be used effectively by children. Moreover, an ERP component known to reflect emotional processing called late positive potential (LPP) can be modulated by children using reappraisal and this modulation is also related to children's emotional adjustment. The present study seeks to elucidate the neural generators of such LPP effects. To this end, children aged 8-14 years reappraised emotional faces, while neural activity in an LPP time window was estimated using ma

Adolescents often report using a repertoire of strategies to regulate their emotions. However, global characterizations of strategy use provide limited insight into the dynamic processes of everyday emotion regulation (ER). It remains unknown whether adolescents can use multiple ER strategies simultaneously within a given emotional event and adjust strategies flexibly as their emotions shift, namely, emotion polyregulation flexibility. Leveraging the Bray-Curtis dissimilarity index to quantify sequential changes in both emotions and ER strategies within and across days, we examined whether ado

INTRODUCTION: Emotion regulation (ER) develops during adolescence and contributes to psychosocial adjustment. Individual differences in the development of ER strategies may be related to cognitive processes responsible for managing goal-directed behaviors, namely executive functions (EFs). This study examined (1) examined how difficulties in specific EFs (i.e., inhibition, flexibility and working memory) predict the use of ER strategies (i.e., reappraisal, distraction, expressive suppression, rumination, support-seeking) in an emotion-specific approach and (2) investigated these links across t

Bipolar disorder (BD) is assumed to be a disorder of emotion regulation (ER), with the most prominent endophenotype being deficient cognitive control (CC). However, the nature of ER and CC deficits and specifically their association in BD has not been adequately examined. Therefore, the present study examines different aspects of ER and CC within n = 32 euthymic patients with BD and n = 32 healthy controls (HCs). Besides self-reported habitual use of ER strategies, we also assessed spontaneous use and success of reappraisal and rumination following different mood inductions (MIs; amusement, sa

INTRODUCTION: Facial emotion recognition (FER) is crucial for effective social competency, and problems in this skill are linked depression during adolescence. In this study, we aimed to find the rates of FER accuracy for negative (fearful, sad, angry, disgusted), positive (happy, surprised), and neutral emotions, and the possible predictors of FER skill for most confusing emotions.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A total of 67 drug-naive adolescents with depression (11 boys, 56 girls; 11-17 years) were recruited for the study. The facial emotion recognition test, childhood trauma questionnaire and bas

Psychological distress is an inevitable part of life. Research drawing on theories from clinical psychology, health psychology, and psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) has identified relationships between negative emotions such as anxiety and sadness with inflammation. When not regulated properly, negative emotions can create biological wear and tear on the body that can increase risk for morbidity and mortality. This review discusses previously available research on relationships between negative emotions and emotion regulation with inflammation among both physically healthy adults and those with chr

BACKGROUND: The study examined how teachers and children with emotional and behavioral disturbances engage in dialogues about children's emotional experiences. Dialogues about emotions are an important strategy for teachers to co-regulate children's emotions but have remained understudied.
AIMS: This study aimed to explore whether the Autobiographical Emotional Events Dialogue (AEED) can help to assess the quality of teacher-child emotion dialogues about past emotional events and examined associations with child behavior and teacher-child relationship quality.
METHOD: The sample included 85

Individuals who struggle with binge eating often report a history of trauma and post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), but there is still a paucity of studies on the relationship between PTSS (as opposed to trauma exposure) and binge eating specifically. The current study aimed to contribute to a small body of literature surrounding the link between PTSS and binge eating. Binge eating may be a behavioral coping mechanism against negative affect; however, it has been proposed that additional psychological mechanisms (e.g. emotion regulation difficulties and emotional eating) may explain the lin

Distress tolerance and emotion regulation deficits are associated with many emotional and behavioral concerns and may be important deficit areas for college students especially during the transition to college. However, little is known about how distress tolerance and emotion regulation relate to each other or what typical profiles of these deficit areas might be. We took a variable-centered (i.e., exploratory factor analysis) and a person-centered approach (i.e., latent profile analysis) to identify the overlap and distinctiveness of distress tolerance and emotion regulation deficits and then

Music streaming platforms have become essential parts of daily life that people now use to regulate their emotions and cope with their psychological needs in online environments. Research has investigated how digital jazz activities connect to neuroemotional functions, emotional control and psychological escape among adult participants from Guangdong Province, China, who are aged 18 to 45 years. The researchers used a mixed-methods design that combined streaming behavior analysis with neurophysiological tests that employed electroencephalography (EEG) and heart rate variability (HRV), skin con

INTRODUCTION: Athletic performance in professional roller hockey is influenced not only by physical, technical, and tactical factors, but also by psychological resources that help athletes regulate pressure, sustain recovery, and enter optimal performance states. This study examined sport calling as a relatively stable psychological resource for understanding performance under pressure in professional roller hockey. Drawing on a demands-resources perspective applied to sport, we tested whether baseline sport calling was associated with competitive performance directly and indirectly through pe

Alcohol misuse is frequently linked to emotional factors such as loneliness and anxiety, with individuals often using alcohol as a coping mechanism. Difficulties in emotional regulation may further exacerbate alcohol consumption; however, the pathways connecting loneliness, anxiety, and alcohol use remain unclear. This study examines these relationships across gender and age groups. A total of 302 participants were divided into young adults (n = 164, mean age = 23.13) and older adults (n = 138, mean age = 58.21). Participants completed measures of alcohol use (AUDIT), loneliness (UCLA), trait

Pupil-based biofeedback has been shown to enable healthy participants to volitionally control locus coeruleus-mediated arousal. The locus coeruleus is considered a critical player in the central stress circuitry and dysfunctions in the system, causing dysregulated arousal levels, have been tightly linked to neuropsychiatric disorders such as anxiety and stress-related disorders and stress-induced cardiovascular vulnerability. Yet, it remains unclear whether physiological and self-rated affective responses to emotional stimuli are influenced by volitional control of arousal levels. In this stud

Learning to regulate one's emotions is a key feature of socio-emotional development. The still-face experiment-which measures how infants respond to a sudden change in maternal responsiveness-has long been considered a reliable indicator of infant reactivity and regulation. However, as a paradigm established to fit Western, middle-class industrialized contexts, its robustness in other cultural contexts, has been questioned. Differences in responses to the still-face experiment are likely shaped by variation in infant-caregiver interactions and practices. To expand the literature and address sa

INTRODUCTION: Emotion regulation difficulties have an important role in the presence of negative self-image. These problems in the self-regulation of emotion could lead to negative emotional processes (such as anger) that can lead to body dissatisfaction. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to examine emotion regulation difficulties than can negatively impact self-image and to understand if anger acts as mediator in the relationship between emotion regulation and body dissatisfaction.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out comprising 565 young adult women aged 18-30 years. T

Huntington's disease (HD) is a genetic neurodegenerative disorder, caused by an expanded CAG repeat in the gene encoding the huntingtin protein. At the premanifest phase, before motor symptoms occur, psychiatric and emotional disorders are observed with high prevalence in HD patients. Agitation, anxiety and irritability are often described but also depression and/or apathy, associated with a lack of emotional control. The aim of the present study was to better circumscribe and understand the emotional symptoms and assess their evolution according to the progression of the disease using a trans
