Behavioral characterization of the alarm reaction and anxiolytic-like effect of acute treatment with fluoxetine in piauçu fish.

In Ostariophysan fish, the detection of the alarm substance liberated into the water as a consequence of an attack by a predator elicits an alarm reaction or anti-predatory behavior. In this study, experiments were performed to: (i) describe and quantitatively characterize the behavioral and ventilatory responses in piauçu fish (Leporinus macrocephalus), individually and as part of a school, to conspecific alarm substance (CAS) and; (ii) test the effect of acute fluoxetine treatment on alarm reaction. Histological analysis revealed the presence of club cells in the intermediate and superficial

The relationship between cognitive avoidance and attentional bias for snake-related thoughts.

Building on the work of Lavy and van den Hout (Lavy, E. H., & van den Hout, M. A. (1994a). Cognitive avoidance and attentional bias: Causal relationships. Cognitive Therapy and Research, 18 (2) 179-191; Lavy, E. H., & van den Hout, M. A. (1994b). Cognitive avoidance and attentional bias: Causal relationships. Behavior Therapy, 24, 645-657), the purpose of the present study was to examine a functional relationship between thought suppression and attentional bias for snake-related thoughts. It was hypothesized that thought suppression is causally involved in the emergence of attentional bias. An

Neonatal treatment with fluoxetine reduces depressive behavior induced by forced swim in adult rats.

Serotonin plays a role at the pathophysiology of depression in humans and in experimental models. The present study investigated the depressive behavior and the weigh evolution in adult rats (60 days) treated from the 1st to the 21st postnatal day with fluoxetine, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (10 mg/kg, sc, daily). The depressive behavior was induced by the forced swim test (FST). The animals were submitted to two sessions of FST: 1st session for 15 min and the 2nd session 24h later, for 5 min. During the 2nd session the Latency of the Attempt of Escape (LAE) and Behavioral Immobil

Excitotoxic lesions of the medial prefrontal cortex attenuate fear responses in the elevated-plus maze, social interaction and shock probe burying tests.

Previous research investigating the effects of medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC) lesions on fear- and anxiety-related behavior has yielded an inconsistent body of findings. Behavioral studies have reported increases, decreases, and no effect on anxiety. In addition, many studies are complicated by the use of lesioning techniques that destroy fibers of passage, and the use of conditioned fear tests, which may introduce the confounding effects of learning and memory. Therefore, the present study examined the effects of ibotenic acid lesions of the MPFC (including prelimbic, infralimbic and anterio

Estrogen replacement reverses ovariectomy-induced vaginal hyperalgesia in the rat.

OBJECTIVES: The loss of ovarian function in women through aging or oophorectomy is often associated with the development of vaginal hyperalgesia that can be alleviated with estrogen replacement. This study examined if ovariectomy in rats would similarly give rise to vaginal hyperalgesia, and, if so, whether estrogen replacement would alleviate it. METHODS: Female rats were trained to perform an operant response to escape vaginal distention delivered by inflating a balloon located in mid-vaginal canal. Percent escape responses to eight different volumes of distention measured in normally cycli

Structural diversity in the inner ear of teleost fishes: implications for connections to the Mauthner cell.

A body of literature suggests that the Mauthner cell startle response can be elicited by stimulation of the ear. While we know that there are projections to the M-cell from the ear, the specific endorgan(s) of the ear projecting to the M-cell are not known. Moreover, there are many reasons to question whether there is one pattern of inner ear to M-cell connection or whether the endorgan(s) projection to the M-cell varies in species that have different hearing capabilities of hearing structures. In this paper, we briefly review the structure of fish ears, with an emphasis on structural regional

Assessing the functions of self-injurious behavior: a case of assessment failure.

Seven attempts to assess the function of self-injurious behavior in a person with profound mental retardation are described. Although repeated correlational and experimental methods were implemented to determine the functional role of this behavior no clear functions were identified. A clinical implication of this case and that this methodology is not all-embracing. Different assumptions should be explored after substantial efforts have failed.

[Comparative evaluation of memory-regulating neuropeptides before and after electric shock in albino rats].

Antiamnestic properties of memory neuropeptide--modulators and their effect on learning were studied as well as consolidation of oligopeptide ACTH4-7, vasopressin, oxytocin, leu enkephalin and the melanocyte inhibiting factor. Effect of these neuropeptides on the rat higher nervous activity is bath strong and specific: ACTH4-7 and leu enkephalin speed up the primary learning whereas vasopressin and oxytocin improve long--term memory. Peptides are able to reverse retrograde as well as anterograde amnesia and to preserve previously formed habits from disturbance by electric shock. Vasopressin an

RNA-binding protein Epiplakin 1 promotes ovarian cancer immune escape and distal metastasis by enhancing the RNA stability of yes-associated protein.

This study investigated the mechanism of the RNA-binding protein Epiplakin 1 (EPPK1) in ovarian cancer (OC). EPPK1 expression in OC tissues was analyzed using gene expression profiling interactive analysis (GEPIA). The association between EPPK1 expression and patient overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) was evaluated through Kaplan-Meier analysis. Reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) and Western blot were performed to quantify EPPK1 levels in 25 clinical OC specimens. An EPPK1-knockdown xenograft model was established to examine tumor grow

Neurocognitive Outcomes in a Cisternal Blood Injection Murine Model of Subarachnoid Hemorrhage.

BACKGROUND: Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) results in neurocognitive dysfunction and anxiety in humans and in animal models. Neurobehavioral tests such as the Morris Water Maze (MWM) and Elevated Plus Maze (EPM) tests are validated in several models of SAH but have not been tested in the murine cisternal blood injection SAH model. METHODS: Adult C57BL/6 mice (n=16) were randomized into two groups. Group 1 (n=8) received sham surgery. Group 2 (n=8) underwent SAH with 60 µL of autologous blood injected into the cisterna magna. Mice were then tested using the Modified Garcia Score on post-operati

Effects of ACTH, benzodiazepines and 5-HT antagonists on escape from periaqueductal grey stimulation in the rat.

1. The effects of drugs has been studied on escape behaviour of rats following electrical stimulation of the periaqueductal grey, in order to assess the feasibility of using the latency to escape as a measure of experimental anxiety. 2. Escape latencies were decreased by methysergide and cyproheptadine, whilst lorazepam and chlordiazepoxide (CDP) increased the latencies. 3. ACTH marginally decreased escape latencies, and did not alter the response to lorazepam. 4. Difficulties associated with using this paradigm to detect anxiolytic or anxiogenic effects of drugs are discussed.

[Psychological reactions to the announcement of a severe disease diagnosis: the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis example].

To face the traumatic shock after the announcement of a severe and fatal disease, patients build psychological defences that physician must identify and respect as long as they don't endanger the patient's psychological fate and his medical care. ALS patient's do not have any curative perspective thus they will try "to escape" using different strategies the traumatic reality, that they cannot integrate and control. The physician has to prove his understanding and empathy facing these psychological reactions that could become of pathological appearance. The physician has to progressively bring

Coordination of escape and spatial navigation circuits orchestrates versatile flight from threats.

Naturalistic escape requires versatile context-specific flight with rapid evaluation of local geometry to identify and use efficient escape routes. It is unknown how spatial navigation and escape circuits are recruited to produce context-specific flight. Using mice, we show that activity in cholecystokinin-expressing hypothalamic dorsal premammillary nucleus (PMd-cck) cells is sufficient and necessary for context-specific escape that adapts to each environment's layout. In contrast, numerous other nuclei implicated in flight only induced stereotyped panic-related escape. We reasoned the dorsal

Stereotypical Escape Behavior in Caenorhabditis elegans Allows Quantification of Effective Heat Stimulus Level.

A goal of many sensorimotor studies is to quantify the stimulus-behavioral response relation for specific organisms and specific sensory stimuli. This is especially important to do in the context of painful stimuli since most animals in these studies cannot easily communicate to us their perceived levels of such noxious stimuli. Thus progress on studies of nociception and pain-like responses in animal models depends crucially on our ability to quantitatively and objectively infer the sensed levels of these stimuli from animal behaviors. Here we develop a quantitative model to infer the perceiv

The study was performed on a contagious behavior model based on drinking, behavior in rats. In the presence of familiar drink-motivated conspecific showing drinking behavior (rat-demonstrator), drink-unmotivated rat-viewer begins to demonstrate behavioral signs ofdrinking motivation that is the signs of behavioral contagion. In this paper; the changes in the ethogram of rats-viewers with behavioral contagion were studied by analyzing atransition probabilities matrix. Those animals showed a decrease in the frequency of aggression and defensive behavior patterns simultaneously with an increase i

Situational and Age-Dependent Decision Making during Life Threatening Distress in Myotis macrodactylus.

Echolocation and audiovocal communication have been studied extensively in bats. The manner in which these abilities are incorporated within escape behaviors during life-threatening distress is largely unknown. Here we tested the hypothesis that behavioral response profiles expressed during distress are relatively stereotypic given their evolutionary adaptations to avoid predators. We subjected juvenile and adult big-footed myotis (Myotis macrodactylus) to a sequence of three types of life threatening distress: 1) trapping them in a mist-net (environmental threat), 2) approaching them when tra

Comparative studies of the effects of chlorpromazine and 5,6-dihydroxytryptamine on locomotion, defensive reactions in the snail Helix lucorum, and command neuron excitability in long-term sensitization.

The actions of the neuroleptic chlorpromazine (CPZ) and the neurotoxin 5,6-dihydroxytryptamine (5,6-DHT) on defensive reactions, locomotion, formation of long-term sensitization, and the electrical characteristics of command neurons in the common snail were compared. Prolonged (chronic) treatment with CPZ led to a significant increase in the pneumostoma closure time, as well as changes in motor behavior, with a decrease in the rate of locomotion. Administration of 5,6-DHT in small daily doses for one week was accompanied by gradual decreases in the rate of locomotion of the snails, which persi

Modulation of heart activity during withdrawal reflexes in the snail Helix aspersa.

The beating activity of the molluscan heart is myogenic, but it is influenced by nervous signals of central origin. Previous studies have demonstrated changes in cardiac output during feeding and other behaviors. Here, we describe a short latency, transient cardiac response that accompanies withdrawal reflexes. When evoked by electrical stimulation of peripheral nerves, the response was detected within one or two heartbeats. Beat amplitudes increased on average 11.6%, and inter-beat intervals decreased on average 2.1%. The mean duration of the response was 28.1 s. A transient inhibitory phase
