Competitive Workflow: novel software architecture for automating drug design.

As industrialization of laboratory processes for drug discovery continues to gather momentum, the bottleneck has moved toward exploitation of this tide of information to enable better quality decisions. The development of information-management systems to automate data and materials management can have a positive impact on productivity, as can increasingly sophisticated computer-aided molecular design approaches. However, as long as key decisions can only be taken by a small number of expert individuals working in a complex social environment, the impact of such innovations will be limited. Th

Electronic surveillance of disease states: a preliminary study in electronic detection of respiratory diseases in a primary care setting.

The present project is a step by step description of the creation of a computerized surveillance system using historical information derived from automated expert system acquisition. Since historical information is in many cases not sufficient for establishing an individual's medical diagnosis, the accuracy of surveillance is measured against the "gold standard" diagnosis provided by a panel of physicians. It was possible to survey within acceptable limits of accuracy in the conditions of the project. The results reveal a high level of sensitivity by computer surveillance as well as an accurat

Diagnosis of dental deformities in cephalometry images using support vector machine.

This paper proposes an automated target recognition algorithm using Support Vector Machine (SVM) to extract landmark points for craniofacial features in cephalometry radiograph. The features are extracted by subjecting the radiograph to the Projected Principle Edge Distribution (PPED) algorithm. Edge flags are accumulated in every four columns and spatial distribution of edge flags are represented by a histogram. The resultants are the front end of support vector machine. Vectors, which possess land marks, are separated from all other vectors. The centroid points, automatically determined from

Forensic significance of the limbic psychotic trigger reaction.

During the "decade of the brain," competent expert testimony should encompass widely neglected, even novel, neurophysiologically plausible explanations for otherwise unexplainable acts. In the case presented here, a sudden, out-of-character, motiveless, unplanned homicidal attack was committed by a patient who demonstrated flat affect, preserved consciousness, and memory of the episode. Transient autonomic hyperactivation and psychosis were suddenly experienced when the victim happened to move his mouth while eating. Following a sudden memory revival of repetitive but moderate bodily stresses,

Automated review of blood donor screening test patterns at a regional blood center.

Regional blood centers recently increased the number of tests used to protect transfusion recipients from infectious disease. The Food and Drug Administration has noted that computer systems for managing these data have lost donor data or failed to recognize all deferrals. Of 118,396 consecutive donations, including 4,859 records with at least one positive test result, records were analyzed to determine the number and frequency of distinct combinations of test data. A modular precedence-logic expert system assigned donor deferrals and unit dispositions. Ten combinations of data accounted for 4

Information technology tools to improve treatment of patients with depression: focus on guidelines implementation.

Information technology has the potential to improve and support the treatment of depression. Use of clinical guidelines can improve outcome of treatment, but implementation of guidelines is a demanding process and the resulting user compliance is often poor. Electronic health records, clinical decision support systems and other information technology tools seem at first glance to be a preferable way to implement clinical guidelines since they require user's active and problem oriented participation. This article reviews attempts made so far at use of information tools for implementation of cli
