The electric blanket syndrome. A metaphor for family dysfunction.

One pattern of dysfunctional family interaction is described as a syndrome. Four case histories are presented in which different family members take polar positions on various continua. In one instance the continuum is oral communication, with garrulousness on one side and silence on the other. Another continuum is family responsibility, where one member of the family takes total responsibility and another takes almost none. The symbolic continuum is an electric blanket with hot at one extreme and cold at the other. In all cases, family therapy was performed by a pediatrician. Guidelines are d

Trade-offs between behavioral plasticity and physiological adaptations in midday gerbils (Meriones meridianus) in response to extreme temperatures.

Climate change is reshaping the thermal environment of Meriones meridianus habitats in the Mu Us Desert in China. However, the trade-off between behavioral plasticity and physiological adaptations in this species when coping with extreme temperatures across seasons remains poorly understood. Here, we measured activity patterns and serum and brown adipose tissue (BAT) metabolite levels in this rodent during summer and autumn, and analyzed their relationships with microhabitat temperatures. Behaviorally, 87.9% of extra-burrow summer activity occurred between 22:00 h and 01:00 h, while autumn act

Altered Sympathoadrenal Activity Following Cold-Water Diving.

INTRODUCTION: Little data exist on the effect of extremely cold-water diving on thermo-metabolic hormone secretion. Moreover, the impact of repetitive dives on the stress response is unknown. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of two daily bouts of cold-water diving on the hormonal and metabolic profile of elite military personnel and to measure the stress response. METHODS: Healthy, male, Norwegian Special Forces operators (n = 5) volunteered for this study. Physiological and hormone data were analyzed prior to and following twice-daily Arctic dives (3.3°C). RESULTS: Cor

Cutis marmorata telangiectatica congenita: an unusual cause of lower extremity hypoplasia.

Cutis marmorata telangiectatica congenita is a relatively benign, rare cutaneous disorder with various manifestations. A seven-year-old girl, who presented with extremity hypoplasia, had the characteristic reticular, patchy, blue-pink cutaneous lesions, which became more prominent with exposure to cold temperatures. She had 4.8 cm shortening of her right lower extremity, which was also thinner than on the left side. The patient did not have skin atrophy, ulcers, glaucoma or macrocephaly. She is being followed for a future extremity lengthening procedure.

Meta-analysis reveals less sensitivity of non-native animals than natives to extreme weather worldwide.

Extreme weather events (EWEs; for example, heatwaves, cold spells, storms, floods and droughts) and non-native species invasions are two major threats to global biodiversity and are increasing in both frequency and consequences. Here we synthesize 443 studies and apply multilevel mixed-effects metaregression analyses to compare the responses of 187 non-native and 1,852 native animal species across terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems to different types of EWE. Our results show that marine animals, regardless of whether they are non-native or native, are overall insensitive to EWEs, ex

Neandertal Cold Adaptation: Technological, Anatomical, and Physiological Responses to Cold Stress in One of Our Closest Fossil Relatives.

Neandertals occupied western Eurasia for over 100 000 years, repeatedly enduring climates that ranged from seasonally cold to glacial. This paper reexamines the question of Neandertal cold adaptation using updated fossil, physiological, and archaeological evidence. While some populations lived outside glacial extremes, all faced periodic cold stress, and their survival depended on a diverse set of strategies. Technological buffers, including fire use, hide processing tools, and possible clothing and footwear, likely played a primary role in reducing cold exposure. Anatomically, Neandertals exh

Responses to temperate, cold, and hot environments and the effect of physical training.

Ten young men underwent several tests before and after a training program: a bicycle ergometer test and 60 min of moderate exercise performed at a temperate 24 degrees C; the same work load performed in heat (40.0 degrees C DB, 30.4 degrees C WB) for 3 h; and cold (10 degrees C) exposure for 60 min. Training consisted of 13 1-h sessions of hard, strenuous, and exhaustive work performed in temperate conditions four times a week. Training resulted in substantial decreases in heart rate and rectal temperature responses to exercise in temperate, minor increases in hot, and no significant changes i

A 3-D virtual human model for simulating heat and cold stress.

In this study, we extended our previously developed anatomically detailed three-dimensional (3-D) thermoregulatory virtual human model for predicting heat stress to allow for predictions of heat and cold stress in one unified model. Starting with the modified Pennes bioheat transfer equation to estimate the spatiotemporal temperature distribution within the body as the underlying modeling structure, we developed a new formulation to characterize the spatial variation of blood temperature between body elements and within the limbs. We also implemented the means to represent heat generated from

Local cutaneous water barrier in cold- and heat-acclimated pigeons (Columba livia) in relation to cutaneous water evaporation.

The thermoregulatory function of the skin differs in adult cold-acclimated and heat-acclimated rock pigeons (Columba livia). In general, the cutaneous evaporative cooling mechanism is not activated by appropriate stimuli in cold-acclimated pigeons in contrast to heat-acclimated pigeons. We studied with electron microscopy whether the differences in the function of the skin are reflected in the structure of the epidermal water barrier of these two extreme acclimation states. The epidermis of cold-acclimated pigeons is attenuated, and the underlying dermis lacks any intimate vascularization. Bot

Neural influence on cold induced vasodilatation using a new set-up for bilateral measurement in the rat hind limb.

Cold induced vasoconstriction (CIVC) is a way for mammals to reduce heat loss in an effort to maintain body core temperature. As blood flow to a cooled extremity is reduced, the amount of body heat lost at the cooled location is minimised. However, when the extremity temperature gets below a certain threshold, Cold induced vasodilatation (CIVD) occurs, a phenomenon that is believed to reduce the risk of local cold injuries. Many theories explaining the mechanism of the CIVD reaction have been postulated, but no consensus has been found. One of these theories is that the CIVD reaction is contro

Impacts of extreme temperature events on intraoperative hypotension: Evidence from a multicenter cohort study of 276,515 patients.

BACKGROUND: Extreme temperature events (ETEs) pose increasing risks for surgical patients, who may be vulnerable to temperature fluctuations. The associations between ETEs and intraoperative hypotension (IOH) remain understudied. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort analysis on patients undergoing major surgery between 2015 and 2023 at three large academic centers. ETEs were defined using percentile-based temperature thresholds and duration. Heat waves were periods of at least 3 consecutive days with daily average temperatures at or above the 95th or 97.5th percentiles of the previous

Ambient Temperature and Early Delivery of Singleton Pregnancies.

BACKGROUND: Extreme temperature is associated with adverse birth outcomes but it is unclear whether it increases early delivery risk. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to determine the association between ambient temperature and early delivery. METHODS: Medical records from 223,375 singleton deliveries from 12 U.S. sites were linked to local ambient temperature. Exposure to hot (> 90th percentile) or cold (< 10th percentile) using site-specific and window-specific temperature distributions were defined for 3-months preconception, 7-week periods during the first two trimesters, 1 week preceding delivery,

The Impact of Climate Change and Extreme Weather Conditions on Cardiovascular Health and Acute Cardiovascular Diseases.

Climate change is widely recognized as one of the most significant challenges facing our planet and human civilization. Human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, and industrial processes release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, leading to a warming of the Earth's climate. The relationship between climate change and cardiovascular (CV) health, mediated by air pollution and increased ambient temperatures, is complex and very heterogeneous. The main mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of CV disease at extreme temperatures involve several regulatory pathways, inc

Heat- and cold-stress effects on cardiovascular mortality and morbidity among urban and rural populations in the Czech Republic.

Several studies have examined the relationship of high and low air temperatures to cardiovascular mortality in the Czech Republic. Much less is understood about heat-/cold-related cardiovascular morbidity and possible regional differences. This paper compares the effects of warm and cold days on excess mortality and morbidity for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) in the city of Prague and a rural region of southern Bohemia during 1994-2009. Population size and age structure are similar in the two regions. The results are evaluated for selected population groups (men and women). Excess mortality (

Chilblains and Raynaud phenomenon are usually not a sign of hereditary protein C and S deficiencies.

Hereditary protein C and S deficiencies are risk factors for thrombosis. They are associated with purpura fulminans and coumarin-induced skin necrosis. Recently, necrotic livedo of the extremities, severe chilblains and severe frostbite have been observed in protein C or S deficient patients. Our study was designed to evaluate the prevalence of cold-induced acral manifestations in patients with protein C or S deficiency. One-hundred-and-six patients with protein C or S deficiency and controls matched for sex and age were studied by questionnaire. Data included any history of acral manifestatio

Thermoregulation in peripheral nerve injury-induced cold-intolerant rats.

PURPOSE: Cold intolerance is defined as pain after exposure to non-painful cold. It is suggested that cold intolerance may be related to dysfunctional thermoregulation in upper extremity nerve injury patients. The purpose of this study was to examine if the re-warming of a rat hind paw is altered in different peripheral nerve injury models and if these patterns are related to severity of cold intolerance. METHODS: In the spared nerve injury (SNI) and complete sciatic lesion (CSL) model, the re-warming patterns after cold stress exposure were investigated preoperatively and at 3, 6 and 9 weeks

Position Within the Burrow and Behavioral Thermoregulation Jointly Shape Thermal Lability in a Fossorial Ectotherm.

Burrowing is a widespread thermoregulatory strategy among ectotherms, yet the spatial and temporal scales by which burrows buffer organisms from thermal extremes remain poorly quantified. We combined high-resolution temperature measurements from gopher tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus) burrows during an anomalous winter cold front and a prescribed fire with multi-year carapacial temperature data from free-ranging tortoises to characterize how belowground refuges mediate exposure to extreme cold and heat. Using Bayesian generalized additive models, we reconstructed continuous temperature fields wi

Assessment of Alertness and Cognitive Performance of Closed Circuit Rebreather Divers With the Critical Flicker Fusion Frequency Test in Arctic Diving Conditions.

Introduction: Cold water imposes many risks to the diver. These risks include decompression illness, physical and cognitive impairment, and hypothermia. Cognitive impairment can be estimated using a critical flicker fusion frequency (CFFF) test, but this method has only been used in a few studies conducted in an open water environment. We studied the effect of the cold and a helium-containing mixed breathing gas on the cognition of closed circuit rebreather (CCR) divers. Materials and Methods: Twenty-three divers performed an identical dive with controlled trimix gas with a CCR device in an ic

[What information can digital plethysmography provide in acrosyndromes?].

Digital plethysmography records digital pulsation and measures blood flow by occlusion and perfusion pressure. The pulsatile curve is modified in vasomotor disorders of the extremities, and is delayed and flattened in obstructive arteriopathy. In Raynaud's phenomenon, the basal flow (at 22 degrees C) decreases with clinical severity, and suppression of post-ischemic blood flow by cold seems to be an attribute of Raynaud's disease. Digital perfusion pressure is usually greater than or equal to 70% of the humeral systolic pressure. When it decreases under hot conditions, organic obstructive arte
