In vitro interaction of eosinophils from ascarid-infected eyes with Ascaris suum and Toxocara canis larvae.

The role of eosinophils in ocular ascarid infection is studied in an animal model. Primary intravitreal infection of guinea-pig eyes with ascarid (Toxocara canis, Ascaris suum) second-stage (L2) larvae resulted in an anterior chamber exudate containing 98% or more eosinophils. Anterior chamber aspirates were cultured in RPMI media 1640 with T. canis or A. suum L2 larvae at 37 degrees C for 1-96 hours. The in vitro interaction of eosinophils with L2 larvae was studied by light, and scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Eosinophil interaction with L2 larvae in vitro was dependent upon s

Prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae infections among pregnant women and eye colonization of their neonates at birth time, Shiraz, Southern Iran.

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae are the two common transmissible pathogens from pregnant women to their neonates. Given the lack of routine screening and treatment of pregnant women in some areas, the possibility of transmission rises. This study seeks to determine the prevalence of C. trachomatis and N. gonorrhoeae in the pregnant women with no clinical symptoms and the vertical transmission rate to their neonates. METHODS: The study was conducted on endocervical and eye swab samples of 239 pregnant women and their neonates. Identification was based on PCR method.

Targets for the diagnosis of Acanthamoeba eye infections include four cyst wall proteins and the mannose-binding domain of the trophozoite mannose-binding protein.

Acanthamoebae, which are free-living amoebae, cause corneal inflammation (keratitis) and blindness, if not quickly diagnosed and effectively treated. The walls of Acanthamoeba cysts contain cellulose and have two layers connected by conical ostioles. Cysts are identified by in vivo confocal microscopy of the eye or calcofluor-white- or Giemsa-labeling of corneal scrapings, both of which demand great expertise. Trophozoites, which use a mannose-binding protein to adhere to keratinocytes, are identified in eye cultures that delay diagnosis and treatment. We recently used structural and experimen

Audit of antibiotic utilization patterns and practice for common eye infections at the ambulatory clinic of a teaching hospital in Ghana: Findings and implications.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a serious public health issue which is exacerbated by increased inappropriate use of antibiotics for common eye infections. This cross sectional survey was to assess the appropriate use of antibiotics for eye infections in an ambulatory clinic in Ghana and possible determinants. METHOD: The medical records of all patients who sought eye care between January 2022 to December 2022 and were prescribed antibiotics were extracted from the hospital's electronic database. Descriptive, bivariate and multivariate analyses were then conducted. RESULTS: A t

Why Peacock Eye Severity Varies with Olive Tree Orientation: Defining Criteria to Predict Infection Events.

Peacock eye disease, caused by the hemibiotrophic fungus Venturia oleaginea, is the most destructive and widespread disease of olive in Israel. In a national project to develop an environmentally friendly peacock eye disease-management protocol for the local olive industry, it was found that one or a few fungicide applications in the autumn effectively suppressed disease development in the concurrent season. Since fungicide application timing should be based on environmental criteria rather than a predefined seasonal schedule, the goal of the current study was to define criteria for predicting

Correlation of Eye Diseases with Odontogenic Foci of Infection: A Case Report Using Infrared Thermography as a Diagnostic Adjunct.

Introduction: Odontogenic infections may influence distant structures, including the eye. Their extension into the paranasal sinuses and orbital region can contribute to inflammatory and glaucomatous conditions. Case Report: A 46-year-old man was examined for a possible odontogenic source of chronic eye disease. The patient had an 18-year history of progressive vision loss in his left eye associated with Posner-Schlossmann syndrome, chronic uveitis, and episodic elevation of intraocular pressure (IOP). Imaging studies revealed the presence of a foreign body in the alveolar recess of the left m

Effect of Protective Measures on the Risk of SARS-CoV-2 Infection among Eye Clinic Staff Members.

BACKGROUND: Switzerland was strongly affected by the pandemic of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) that resulted in a nationwide lockdown in March 2020. Ophthalmologists were at most risk of contracting a SARS-CoV-2 infection due to their close working distance from patients. The aim of the study is to evaluate the overall effectiveness of protective measures on the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection among employees in a large public eye hospital. MATERIAL AND METHODS: After lifting the lockdown in April 2020, standard precaution measures were taken, such as no handshakin

Zika virus infects cells lining the blood-retinal barrier and causes chorioretinal atrophy in mouse eyes.

Zika virus (ZIKV) is an important pathogen that causes not only neurologic, but also ocular, abnormalities. Thus, it is imperative that models to study ZIKV pathogenesis in the eye are developed to identify potential targets for interventions. Here, we studied ZIKV interactions with human retinal cells and evaluated ZIKV's pathobiology in mouse eyes. We showed that cells lining the blood-retinal barrier (BRB), the retinal endothelium, and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) were highly permissive and susceptible to ZIKV-induced cell death. Direct inoculation of ZIKV in eyes of adult C57BL/6 and I

Severe eye complications from Stevens-Johnson syndrome in a human immunodeficiency virus-infected patient in Malawi.

Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) is a severe form of erythema multiforme that primarily affects skin and mucous membranes. In Malawi, manifestations of SJS may become more common in human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients receiving nevirapine-based antiretroviral therapy (ART) because the CD4 cell threshold for starting ART has increased from 250 to 350 cells/μL. We describe a patient with severe ocular complications from SJS that developed soon after initiation of nevirapine-based ART and cotrimoxazole preventive treatment, which led to blindness. We draw attention to preventive measures

Marek's disease virus infection in the eye: chronological study of the lesions, virus replication, and vaccine-induced protection.

Marek's disease virus (MDV) infection in the eye was studied chronologically after inoculating 1-day-old chickens with a very virulent MDV strain, Md5. The ocular lesions could be classified as early lesions (6-11 days postinoculation [dpi]) and late lesions (26 and 56 dpi), based upon the location and severity of the lesions. The early lesions involved iris, ciliary body, and choroid layer, and were characterized by endothelial cell hypertrophy, vasculitis, and infiltration of lymphocytes (mainly CD8+), plasma cells, macrophages, and heterophils. Expression of early MDV-antigen pp38 in the ce

Influence of Demodex Infection in the Occurrence and Prognosis of Keratitis in Patients With Meibomian Gland Dysfunction Related Dry Eye.

AIMS/BACKGROUND: Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD)-related dry eye results in reduced tears, unstable tear film, ocular surface damage, and even causes keratitis. Demodex infection causes inflammatory diseases of the ocular surface. This study aimed to explore the impact of Demodex infection on the occurrence and prognosis of keratitis in patients with MGD-related dry eye. METHODS: A total of 122 MGD patients who visited the Department of Ophthalmology, The First People's Hospital of Chun'an County from June 2022 to June 2023 were selected for retrospective study. Patients were divided into k

Parasite spillover rather than niche expansion explains infection of host brain by diplostomid eye flukes.

Parasites often occupy specific sites within their host, which has important implications for host performance and parasite transmission. Nonetheless, parasitic infections can occur beyond their typical location within a host, significantly altering host-parasite interactions. Yet, the causes behind the atypical tissue tropism are poorly understood. Here, we focus on a ubiquitous group of diplostomid parasites that form diverse communities in fish eyes. We used targeted DNA metabarcoding (cytochrome c oxydase subunit 1, COX1, 250 bp) to evaluate potential mechanisms underlying eye parasite aty

Prevalence of Antimicrobial Resistant Bacteria from Conjunctival Flora in an Eye Infection Prone Breed (Saint Bernard).

The conjunctival bacterial resident and opportunistic flora of dogs may represent a major source of dissemination of pathogens throughout the environment or to other animals and humans. Nevertheless, contamination with bacteria from external sources is common. In this context, the study of the antimicrobial resistance (AMR) pattern may represent an indicator of multidrug resistant (MDR) strains exchange. The present study was focused on a single predisposed breed-Saint Bernard. The evaluated animals were healthy, but about half had a history of ocular disease/treatment. The swabs collected fro

Visual Impairment and Eye Diseases in HIV-infected People in the Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) Era in Rakai, Uganda.

PURPOSE: Antiretroviral therapy reduced infectious eye diseases (EDs) in HIV-infected people. There is limited data on age-related EDs and visual impairment (VI) in people living with HIV. We report prevalence of VI and spectrum of EDs in HIV-infected people in an ART era in Rakai, Uganda. METHODS: A philanthropic campaign during 2009-2012 provided ophthalmic services to HIV+ patients in care. Unilateral presenting visual acuity (VA) was assessed by a trained staff in HIV clinics using a 6-m Snellen chart. A slit-lamp examination by an ophthalmologist evaluated eyes with impaired acuity. The Eye as a Window to the Brain: Neuroretinal Thickness Is Associated With Microstructural White Matter Injury in HIV-Infected Children.

PURPOSE: Despite combination antiretroviral therapy (cART), perinatal HIV-infection can cause decreased gray and white matter volume, microstructural white matter injury, and retinal structural abnormalities. As neuroretinal tissue is directly connected to the brain, these deficits may have a shared pathogenesis. We aimed to assess associations between neuroretinal thickness and cerebral injury in cART-treated perinatally HIV-infected children and healthy controls. METHODS: This cross-sectional observational study included 29 cART-treated perinatally HIV-infected children and 35 matched healt
