Early perceptual anomaly of negative facial expression in depression: An event-related potential study.

Depressed patients have a demonstrated cognitive bias in emotional information processing. However, it is unknown how early perceptual processing is modulated by emotional stimuli in depression. To examine this question, we studied 22 depressed patients and 22 healthy controls performing a cued target-response task with emotional facial expression as the cue. The early perceptual processes were examined using event-related potential (ERP) components, i.e., P1 and N170. Results showed that depressed patients had larger P1 amplitudes than healthy controls, implying that early perceptual abnormal

Impaired event-related theta spectral coherence in emotional facial expression processing in neurodegenerative disorders.

INTRODUCTION: The ability to recognize emotional facial expressions relies on brain functional networks, particularly in the right hemisphere, and is impaired in neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. Given that this ability involves brain networks operating within hundreds of milliseconds, we tested the hypothesis of abnormalities in event-related spectral electroencephalographic coherence, with a focus on the right versus left hemispheres in these patients. METHODS: Event-related theta (4-7 Hz) magnitude-squared coherence was calculated for both in

Are you angry? Neural basis of impaired facial expression recognition in pre-manifest Huntington's.

INTRODUCTION: Early non-motor symptoms in Huntington's disease (HD), including visual perceptual difficulties, can have profound negative impacts on quality of life. In particular, deficits in emotion recognition may contribute to misinterpretation of social cues, and may adversely affect interpersonal relationships, work relationships and/or general well-being. This may be particularly salient during the pre-manifest period, a period prior to the onset of motor symptoms. We sought to evaluate impairments in emotion recognition in gene-positive individuals who did not meet criterial for a diag

Objective Assessment of Acute Pain in Foals Using a Facial Expression-Based Pain Scale.

Pain assessment is very important for monitoring welfare and quality of life in horses. To date, no studies have described pain scales for objective assessment of pain in foals. Studies in other species have shown that facial expression can be used in neonatal animals for objective assessment of acute pain. The aim of the current study was to adapt a facial expression-based pain scale for assessment of acute pain in mature horses for valid pain assessment in foals. The scale was applied to fifty-nine foals (20 patients and 39 healthy controls); animals were assessed from video recordings (30-6

The upregulated expression of sonic hedgehog in motor neurons after rat facial nerve axotomy.

Nerve injury leads to the induction of a large number of genes to repair the damage and to restore synaptic transmission. We have attempted to identify molecules whose mRNA expression is altered in response to facial nerve axotomy. Here we report that facial nerve axotomy upregulates Sonic hedgehog (Shh) and its receptor Smoothened (Smo) in facial motor neurons of adult rats, whereas facial nerve axotomy does not upregulate mRNA of Shh or Smo in neonatal rats. We tested whether overexpression of Shh in facial motor neurons of axotomized neonatal rats may promote neuronal survival. Adenovirus-m

Estrogen receptor expression in the facial nucleus of adult hamsters: does axotomy recapitulate development?

Testosterone propionate (TP) augments hamster facial motoneuron regeneration following axonal injury by an androgen-mediated mechanism. Although many of the trophic properties of TP are androgenic, TP can be metabolized to estradiol (E). We have recently shown that E administered in supraphysiological doses can also enhance facial nerve regeneration. The mechanism by which E alters nerve regeneration is unknown. The recent discovery of transient estrogen receptor (ER) expression in the developing rat facial motor nucleus (FMN), coupled with the concept that regeneration may recapitulate develo

Test-retest reliability of high-resolution surface electromyographic activities of facial muscles during facial expressions in healthy adults: A prospective observational study.

OBJECTIVES: Surface electromyography (sEMG) is a standard method for psycho-physiological research to evaluate emotional expressions or in a clinical setting to analyze facial muscle function. High-resolution sEMG shows the best results to discriminate between different facial expressions. Nevertheless, the test-retest reliability of high-resolution facial sEMG is not analyzed in detail yet, as good reliability is a necessary prerequisite for its repeated clinical application. METHODS: Thirty-six healthy adult participants (53% female, 18-67 years) were included. Electromyograms were recorded

The influence of the muscles of facial expression on the development of the midface and the nose in cleft lip and palate patients. A reflection of functional anatomy, facial esthetics and physiology of the nose.

The further improvement of well-established techniques in primary and secondary cleft surgery requires a detailed and interdisciplinary knowledge and observation of anatomical, functional and developmental problems. An investigation into the macroscopic and microscopic anatomy of the perinasal and perioral muscles and parts of the human nasal septum, as well as into the pathomorphology of ancient skulls with untreated clefts is presented. On this basis an interpretation of clinical findings in untreated newborns compared with surgically treated CLP-patients has been undertaken. The 3D-CT, supe

Cross-Dataset Facial Micro-Expression Recognition with Regularization Learning and Action Unit-Guided Data Augmentation.

With the growing development of facial micro-expression recognition technology, its practical application value has attracted increasing attention. In real-world scenarios, facial micro-expression recognition typically involves cross-dataset evaluation, where training and testing samples come from different datasets. Specifically, cross-dataset micro-expression recognition employs multi-dataset composite training and unseen single-dataset testing. This setup introduces two major challenges: inconsistent feature distributions across training sets and data imbalance. To address the distribution

Expression of c-Jun and KROX-20 Following Facial Nerve Injury and Recovery in Rats.

BACKGROUND: This study evaluated whether recovery from facial paralysis was associated with the expression of Krox-20 and c-Jun genes that are shown to be related to facial nerve regeneration after facial nerve compression and cutting. METHODS: The left facial nerves of 24 male Sprague-Dawley rats aged 6 weeks were subjected to crushing or cutting injury. Whisker movements of the vibrissae muscle and blink reflexes of the eyelids were measured on days 4 and 14 after facial nerve injury. The facial nerves on both sides were removed, and the expression of c-Jun and Krox-20 proteins was evaluate

Joint encoding of facial identity, orientation, gaze, and expression in the middle dorsal face area.

The last two decades have established that a network of face-selective areas in the temporal lobe of macaque monkeys supports the visual processing of faces. Each area within the network contains a large fraction of face-selective cells. And each area encodes facial identity and head orientation differently. A recent brain-imaging study discovered an area outside of this network selective for naturalistic facial motion, the middle dorsal (MD) face area. This finding offers the opportunity to determine whether coding principles revealed inside the core network would generalize to face areas out

Attentional control and interpretation of facial expression after oxytocin administration to typically developed male adults.

Deficits in attentional-inhibitory control have been reported to correlate to anger, hostility, and aggressive behavior; therefore, inhibitory control appears to play an important role in prosocial behavior. Moreover, recent studies have demonstrated that oxytocin (OT) exerts a prosocial effect (e.g., decreasing negative behaviors, such as aggression) on humans. However, it is unknown whether the positively valenced effect of OT on sociality is associated with enhanced attentional-inhibitory control. In the present study, we hypothesized that OT enhances attentional-inhibitory control and that

Decreased facial expression variability in patients with serious cardiopulmonary disease in the emergency care setting.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The hypothesis of the present work derives from clinical experience that suggests that patients who are more ill have less facial expression variability in response to emotional cues. METHODS: Prospective study of diagnostic accuracy from a convenience sample of adult patients with dyspnoea and chest pain in an emergency department. Patients viewed three stimulus slides on a laptop computer that were intended to evoke a change in facial affect. The computer simultaneously video recorded patients' facial expressions. Videos were examined by two independent blinded obs

Joint recognition-expression impairment of facial emotions in Huntington's disease despite intact understanding of feelings.

Patients with Huntington's disease (HD), a neurodegenerative disorder that causes major motor impairments, also show cognitive and emotional deficits. While their deficit in recognising emotions has been explored in depth, little is known about their ability to express emotions and understand their feelings. If these faculties were impaired, patients might not only mis-read emotion expressions in others but their own emotions might be mis-interpreted by others as well, or thirdly, they might have difficulties understanding and describing their feelings. We compared the performance of recogniti
