Creating Tunable Low-Surface-Tension-Liquid Capsules via Impact-Driven Liquid-Liquid Encapsulation.

The encapsulation of droplets with low surface tension constitutes a critical area of investigation due to its extensive application across pharmaceuticals, environmental engineering, and advanced thermal management. A facile and effective approach─impact-driven liquid-liquid encapsulation (LLE)─has gained attention recently. This approach involves a descending core liquid impacting an immiscible liquid film (shell layer) that floats atop a host bath, subsequently being encapsulated by the liquid film. Despite its promise, the controlled encapsulation targeting low-surface-tension droplets via

Assessment of potentially toxic elements in the soils of Moscow playgrounds: pollution sources and human health risks.

Playgrounds serve as the primary play areas in metropolitan areas for children - a demographic that is particularly vulnerable to environmental contaminants. Accumulation levels, spatial distribution, sources, and potential health risks to children of Potentially Toxic Elements (PTEs) in soils from 97 Moscow playgrounds were studied. Concentrations of 17 PTEs (Be, V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Rb, Sr, Mo, Cd, Sb, Ba, W, Pb, Bi) in bulk soil samples and PM1/PM10 fractions were determined using ICP-MS and ICP-AES. Most PTEs exceeded regional background levels. Compared to bulk samples, PTE concentr

Availability and quality of anti-malarials among private sector outlets in Myanmar in 2012: results from a large, community-based, cross-sectional survey before a large-scale intervention.

BACKGROUND: Global malaria control efforts are threatened by the spread and emergence of artemisinin-resistant Plasmodium falciparum parasites. In 2012, the widespread sale of partial courses of artemisinin-based monotherapy was suspected to take place in the highly accessed, weakly regulated private sector in Myanmar, posing potentially major threats to drug resistance. This study investigated the presence of artemisinin-based monotherapies in the Myanmar private sector, particularly as partial courses of therapy, to inform the targeting of future interventions to stop artemisinin resistance.

Strengthening infectious disease surveillance in a Dutch-German crossborder area using a real-time information exchange system.

International outbreaks are occurring much faster than before and require rapid trans-national detection and response. Never before has there been a more urgent need for improved crossborder collaboration on harmonisation of surveillance and response systems despite varying legislations. In the Euregion Maas Rhine, the Public Health Services of South Limburg in the Netherlands and Aachen in Germany agreed to join forces to work on a collaborative tool for sharing real-time infectious disease data. Both units had already implemented an adapted version of HPZone (a web-based software suite for m

Drug-resistant tuberculosis: emerging treatment options.

Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis has emerged worldwide, with an increasing incidence due to failure of implementation of apparently effective first-line antituberculous therapy as well as primary infection with drug-resistant strains. Failure of current therapy is attributed to a long duration of treatment leading to nonadherence and irregular therapy, lack of patient education about the disease, poverty, irregular supply by care providers, drug-drug interactions in patients coinfected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), inadequate regulations causing market overlap and irresponsible drug

Programmable Food-Derived Peptide Coassembly Strategies for Boosting Targeted Colitis Therapy by Enhancing Oral Bioavailability and Restoring Gut Microenvironment Homeostasis.

Orally targeting nanostrategies of multiple nutraceuticals have attracted increasing attention in ulcerative colitis (UC) therapy for superior patient compliance, cost-effectiveness, and biocompatibility. However, the actual targeting delivery and bioefficacy of nutraceuticals are extremely restricted by their poor solubility, interior gastrointestinal retention, and base permeability. Herein, we developed controllable colon-targeting nanoparticles (NPs) composed of a quaternary ammonium chitosan (HTCC) shell and succinic acid-modified γ-cyclodextrin (SACD) core for precise UC treatment. Potential role of immunotherapy and targeted therapy in the treatment of cancer: A contemporary nursing practice.

Immunotherapy and targeted therapy have emerged as promising therapeutic options for cancer patients. Immunotherapies induce a host immune response that mediates long-lived tumor destruction, while targeted therapies suppress molecular mechanisms that are important for tumor maintenance and growth. In addition, cytotoxic agents and targeted therapies regulate immune responses, which increases the chances that these therapeutic approaches may be efficiently combined with immunotherapy to ameliorate clinical outcomes. Various studies have suggested that combinations of therapies that target diff

Nrf2 Activation Protects Against Organic Dust and Hydrogen Sulfide Exposure Induced Epithelial Barrier Loss and K. pneumoniae Invasion.

Agriculture workers report various respiratory symptoms owing to occupational exposure to organic dust (OD) and various gases. Previously, we demonstrated that pre-exposure to hydrogen sulfide (H2S) alters the host response to OD and induces oxidative stress. Nrf2 is a master-regulator of host antioxidant response and exposures to toxicants is known to reduce Nrf2 activity. The OD exposure-induced lung inflammation is known to increase susceptibility to a secondary microbial infection. We tested the hypothesis that repeated exposure to OD or H2S leads to loss of Nrf2, loss of epithelial cell i

Nanoscale dynamic chemical, biological sensor material designs for control monitoring and early detection of advanced diseases.

Early detection and easy continuous monitoring of emerging or re-emerging infectious, contagious or other diseases are of particular interest for controlling healthcare advances and developing effective medical treatments to reduce the high global cost burden of diseases in the backdrop of lack of awareness regarding advancing diseases. Under an ever-increasing demand for biosensor design reliability for early stage recognition of infectious agents or contagious diseases and potential proteins, nanoscale manufacturing designs had developed effective nanodynamic sensing assays and compact weara

Formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) in water and wastewater treatment systems in Tamil Nadu: evaluating chlorination alternatives for safer water quality.

Disinfection is a critical process in water and wastewater treatment to pathogen control and achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG-6). However, the formation of intermediate compounds during disinfection, known as disinfection byproducts (DBPs), poses adverse effects to human health. Trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs) are the major regulated halogenated DBPs formed during chlorination. In India, chlorination remains the conventional disinfection method in water and wastewater treatment systems. This study investigated the formation of THMs and HAAs in chlorinated water and

Transcriptional Profiling of the Candida auris Response to Exogenous Farnesol Exposure.

The antifungal resistance threat posed by Candida auris necessitates bold and innovative therapeutic options. Farnesol is a quorum-sensing molecule with a potential antifungal and/or adjuvant effect; it may be a promising candidate in alternative treatment regimens. To gain further insights into the farnesol-related effect on C. auris, genome-wide gene transcription analysis was performed using transcriptome sequencing (RNA-Seq). Farnesol exposure resulted in 1,766 differentially expressed genes. Of these genes, 447 and 304 genes with at least 1.5-fold increase or decrease in transcription, re

Sodium caseinate/cellulose nanofiber-stabilized Pickering emulsions: A study on lipid absorption regulation.

This study aimed to develop a sustainable and bio-based nano-additive (sodium caseinate/cellulose nanofibers (SC/CNF) complex) to modulate liquid-based oil-in-water (O/W) colloid interfaces, which function as a fat control agent to slow lipid digestion. Edible protein (SC) was grafted onto CNF through facile electrostatic attraction, which reduces solvent and chemical usage for greener process. The physicochemical properties of SC/CNF showed that adding SC increased the interfacial bonding between CNF particles, resulting in higher interfacial pressure by forming dense and compact layers of SC

Matrix metalloproteinases and their inhibitors in the chamber angle of normal eyes and patients with primary open-angle glaucoma and exfoliation glaucoma.

BACKGROUND: In glaucoma, extensive pathological changes occur in the trabecular meshwork (TM) and juxtacanalicular tissue of the chamber angle. Aqueous humor drainage is disturbed due to the accumulation of extracellular matrix (ECM) material in the outflow system. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) remodel ECM material and, thus, they may have a role in regulating outflow facility and intraocular pressure (IOP). This study examined the expression of MMPs and tissue inhibitors of MMPs (TIMPs) in the chamber angle of normal eyes and in primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and in exfoliation glaucom

The effect of a parental preparation video (Take5) on child and parent anxiety during anaesthetic induction: a protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Children undergoing anaesthetic induction experience peri-operative anxiety associated with negative outcomes including emergence delirium, short- and long-term maladaptive behaviour and increased postoperative analgesic requirements. This stems from children's limited ability to communicate, cope, and regulate intense emotions, leading to high dependency on parental emotional regulation. Previous interventions including video modelling, education and distraction techniques before and during anaesthetic induction have demonstrated significant reduction of anxiety levels. No existin

Decoding Transcription Regulatory Mechanisms Associated with Coccidioides immitis Phase Transition Using Total RNA.

New or emerging infectious diseases are commonly caused by pathogens that cannot be readily manipulated or studied under common laboratory conditions. These limitations hinder standard experimental approaches and our abilities to define the fundamental molecular mechanisms underlying pathogenesis. The advance of capped small RNA sequencing (csRNA-seq) now enables genome-wide mapping of actively initiated transcripts from genes and other regulatory transcribed start regions (TSRs) such as enhancers at a precise moment from total RNA. As RNA is nonpathogenic and can be readily isolated from inac

Remotely Presenting Alcohol-predicting Cues Avoids Confound of Experimenter as First Cue and Reveals Sex-specific Behaviors that Predict the Rate and Amount of Alcohol Consumption.

Understanding the neurobiological systems that regulate alcohol cue-induced craving is of utmost importance for the development of novel intervention strategies for alcohol use disorders (AUDs). However, although a human experimenter is required to conduct alcohol self-administration studies in the lab, the cues associated with the experimenter are seldom if ever factored into the experimental design. Thus, although we have learned much to date about alcohol cue-induced behavior and neurobiology, and in particular about discrete cues presented many times throughout a single daily alcohol self-
