Global warming and infectious disease.

Global warming has serious implications for all aspects of human life, including infectious diseases. The effect of global warming depends on the complex interaction between the human host population and the causative infectious agent. From the human standpoint, changes in the environment may trigger human migration, causing disease patterns to shift. Crop failures and famine may reduce host resistance to infections. Disease transmission may be enhanced through the scarcity and contamination of potable water sources. Importantly, significant economic and political stresses may damage the exist

Qualitative Research as a Basis for Transforming an Annual Plague Into an Economic and Nutrition Opportunity for Youths and Their Families in Madagascar: "From Harmful to Useful Critters" for Sustainable Development.

BACKGROUND: Madagascar is among the 10 highest burden countries for malnutrition. Protein-energy malnutrition, anemia, and vitamin deficiencies are major public health problems. Hunger is exacerbated by an annual locust invasion. The current policy of large-scale government spraying of pesticides from planes is logistically complex, costly, and damaging to the environment. OBJECTIVE: Our research aimed to study the feasibility of turning the locust invasion into a protein-rich food supply for families and an economic opportunity for youth. METHODS: We conducted 20 focus group discussions (FG

Sexual stature difference fluctuations in pre- and post-Black Death London as an indicator of living standards.

OBJECTIVES: The degree of sexual stature difference (SSD), the ratio of male to female height, is argued to be an indicator of living standards based on evidence that physical growth for males is more sensitive to environmental fluctuations. In a resource-poor environment, the degree of SSD is expected to be relatively low. The aim of this study is to comparatively assess SSD in medieval London in the context of repeated famine events and other environmental stressors before the Black Death (BD) and the improved living conditions that characterized the post-Black Death period. METHODS: To tes

Foraging theory and the propensity to be obese: an alternative to thrift.

The evolutionary origin of obesity is classically believed to be genetic or developmentally induced thrift, as an adaptation to ancestral feast and famine conditions. However, recently the thrift family of hypotheses have attracted serious criticism necessitating alternative thinking. Optimization of foraging behaviour is an important aspect of behavioural evolution. For a species evolved for optimizing nutritional benefits against predation or other foraging risks, reduction in foraging risk below a threshold dramatically increases the steady-state body weight. In modern life where feeding is

Comparative performance of different scale-down simulators of substrate gradients in Penicillium chrysogenum cultures: the need of a biological systems response analysis.

In a 54 m3 large-scale penicillin fermentor, the cells experience substrate gradient cycles at the timescales of global mixing time about 20-40 s. Here, we used an intermittent feeding regime (IFR) and a two-compartment reactor (TCR) to mimic these substrate gradients at laboratory-scale continuous cultures. The IFR was applied to simulate substrate dynamics experienced by the cells at full scale at timescales of tens of seconds to minutes (30 s, 3 min and 6 min), while the TCR was designed to simulate substrate gradients at an applied mean residence time (τc) of 6 min. A biological systems an

Current views and challenges on clinical cholera.

Cholera, an acute diarrheal infection has become a major global threat. Vibrio cholerae the causative agent of cholera has been responsible for six previous pandemics since 1817 that spanned four continents and Australia with the seventh pandemic ongoing since 1961. Two serogroups of V. cholerae O1 and O139 have the ability to secrete the enterotoxin with potential to cause epidemics. The prior six pandemics were caused by the classical biotype of the O1 serogroup. However, the emergence of the El Tor biotype and subsequent variants of El Tor with classical traits are the main isolates in the

Type 2 diabetes in children.

The emerging epidemic of type 2 diabetes (T2DM) in young people reflects increasing rates of obesity and parallels the increasing frequency of T2DM in adults. As in adults, T2DM in children is part of the insulin resistance syndrome that includes hyperandrogenism seen as premature adrenarche and polycystic ovary syndrome, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and other atherosclerosis risk factors. Recent studies in children document risk factors for T2DM, and associated cardiovascular risk factors, including obesity, family history, diabetic gestation, and underweight or overweight for gestational age.

DNA polymorphism-diet-cofactor-development hypothesis and the gene-teratogen model for schizophrenia and other developmental disorders.

Three problems in identifying genes causing schizophrenia and other developmental disorders may be locus heterogeneity, high disease allele frequency, and unknown mode of inheritance. The DNA polymorphism-diet-cofactor-development (DDCD) hypothesis addresses the first two. The gene-teratogen model addresses the third. The DDCD hypothesis is that schizophrenia results in part from brain abnormality in utero from the aggregate effect of multiple mutations of small effect of genes related to important cofactors (e.g., folate, cobalamin, or pyridoxine) potentiated by maternal dietary deficiency of

[An outbreak of Heliotrope food poisoning, Tadjikistan, November 1992-March 1993].

The seeds and roots of Heliotropium lasocarpium, contain a pyrrolizidine alkaloid which causes toxic liver injury and veno-occlusive disease (VOD), characterised by an occlusive lesion of the centrolobular veins of the liver, when consumed by humans. The Farkhar region of Southern Tadjikistan, was blockaded from May to November 1992. This led to a famine and a delay of two months in the wheat harvest. Heliotropium lasocarpium had time to grow in the fields and their seeds were therefore collected with the wheat. The contaminated wheat was distributed to the population, who milled it and made b

The National Schistosomiasis Control Programme in Mali, objectives, organization, results.

Schistosomiasis control started regionally, in the Bandiagara district, and as a component of a dam-building project in 1978. In 1982 a national programme was created. Control was divided into three phases: Preparation, intervention and maintenance. Districts qualifyed for schistosomiasis control activities, when the prevalence for either Schistosoma haematobium or Schistosoma mansoni exceeded 20% and/or the prevalence of persons with intensive infections for either parasite exceeded 5%. Intensive infection was defined as the excretion of more than 50 eggs per 10 ml of urine or the excretion o

Multifactorial drivers of spatial variation in human body form across modern China.

Human body form reveals cumulative effects of ecological and socio-cultural factors. China provides an exceptional context for investigating these multifactorial influences, not only because of its extensive geographic and cultural diversity, but also because recent decades have been marked by rapid economic development, urbanisation, migration, and the population-level trauma of the Great Famine. Using anthropometric data from > 90,000 adults across 213 geo-referenced groups from mid-late-20th and early-21st centuries, we applied Bayesian hierarchical models to assess the roles of climate, al

A 200-year reconstruction of Kocasu River (Sakarya River Basin, Turkey) streamflow derived from a tree-ring network.

The Sakarya River Basin (SRB) contains one of the most important agricultural areas for Turkey. Here, we use a network of 18 tree-ring chronologies and present a reconstruction of the mean June-July Kocasu River discharge, one of the main channels in the SRB, during the period 1803-2002 CE, and place the short period of instrumental flows (since 1953 CE) into historical context. Over the past two centuries, we found 33 dry and 28 wet events and observed the longest wet period between the years 1880 and 1920. The driest years were 1845 and 1873, and the wettest years were 1859 and 1960. Our rec

Mobility, mortality, and the middle ages: identification of migrant individuals in a 14th century black death cemetery population.

Mobility and migration patterns of groups and individuals have long been a topic of interest to archaeologists, used for broad explanatory models of cultural change as well as illustrations of historical particularism. The 14th century AD was a tumultuous period of history in Britain, with severely erratic weather patterns, the Great Famine of 1315-1322, the Scottish Wars of Independence, and the Hundred Years' War providing additional migration pressures to the ordinary economic issues drawing individuals to their capital under more stable conditions. The use of home-based therapy with ready-to-use therapeutic food to treat malnutrition in a rural area during a food crisis.

When the international community declared a famine in Malawi in January of 2006, emergency food aid reached only populations with pre-existing health care services. To treat the widespread childhood malnutrition in Machinga district, a rural area lacking health care facilities, in February 2006 five outpatient therapeutic programs were implemented that utilized home-based therapy and ready-to-use therapeutic food. Children with severe malnutrition, defined as the presence of edema and/or a weight-for-height less than 70% of the reference standard, were enrolled in the program. Two senior clini

A distinct gene expression mechanism for d-amino acid utilization in hyperthermophilic archaeon Pyrococcus horikoshii.

Growing the hyperthermophilic archaeon Pyrococcus horikoshii OT-3 in medium supplemented with d-allo-Ile instead of l-Ile markedly upregulates the activity of broad substrate specificity amino acid racemase (BAR). In P. horikoshii genome, the BAR gene (PH0138) forms a cluster with PH0137, which encodes a putative transporter protein, and PH0140 that encodes a feast/famine regulatory protein (FFRP), involved in the transcriptional regulation of metabolic pathway genes. Here, we performed gene expression, protein-DNA interaction, and crystallographic analyses to elucidate the expression mechanis

Morphology-informed deep learning for risk assessment of filamentous bulking in a full-scale industrial wastewater treatment plant.

Filamentous bulking (FB) is a recurring cause of solids-separation failure in activated sludge systems. Standard diagnostics such as sludge volume index (SVI) and routine microscopy are largely reactive, confirming deterioration only after settling performance has already degraded. Surrogate, rule-based risk assessment models offer interpretable early warnings, but they infer microbial states indirectly and may become unreliable under variable industrial operation. Here, we propose a deep-learning, morphology-informed framework that directly scores FB risk from sludge microscopy images. Two pr

The womb as the cradle of longevity: Perinatal origins of biological aging.

The perinatal period is increasingly recognized as an important determinant of biological aging trajectories and disease susceptibility across the lifespan. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence linking intrauterine exposures to adult health outcomes across three biological dimensions: fetal programming, maternal influences, and placental mediation. Evidence from the Dutch Hunger Winter suggests that the timing of gestational exposure-not birth weight alone-might govern programming outcomes. Modern epigenetic clock studies have since reported accelerated biological aging at midlif

Combined effects of calorie restriction and chronic stress on systemic inflammation and gut microbiota in rats exposed to Leptospira interrogans lipopolysaccharide.

BACKGROUND: Calorie restriction (CR) is widely studied for its anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects. However, under conditions of chronic stress-such as those experienced during war, displacement, or famine-its impact on immune function remains poorly understood. In such contexts, combined nutritional and psychosocial stress may exacerbate inflammation and compromise host defences against pathogens. OBJECTIVE: To investigate how the combination of moderate calorie restriction and chronic social stress affects systemic immune responses and gut microbiota composition following exposur

Unraveling the Molecular Mechanisms of the Neurodevelopmental Consequences of Fetal Protein Deficiency: Insights From Rodent Models and Public Health Implications.

Fetal brain development requires increased maternal protein intake to ensure that offspring reach their optimal cognitive potential in infancy and adulthood. While protein deficiency remains a prevalent issue in developing countries, it is also reemerging in Western societies due to the growing adoption of plant-based diets, some of which are monotonous and may fail to provide sufficient amino acids crucial for the brain's critical developmental phase. Confounding variables in human nutritional research have impeded our understanding of the precise impact of protein deficiency on fetal neurode

Prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies across diverse environments in rural Madagascar.

It is estimated that billions of people around the world are affected by micronutrient deficiencies. Madagascar is considered to be particularly nutritionally vulnerable, with nearly half of the population stunted, and parts of the country facing emergency, near famine-like conditions (IPC4). Although Madagascar is generally considered among the most undernourished of countries, empirical data in the form of biological samples to validate these claims are extremely limited. Our research drew data from three studies conducted between 2013-2020 and provided comprehensive biomarker profile inform
