In the summer of 1995, cryptosporidiosis was diagnosed in a child in hospital. This child had taken part in a summer activity project involving 161 children and nine adults. Reports of a similar illness among a number of other participants prompted an outbreak investigation. A cohort study was conducted in two phases. Thirteen children (aged 6 to 15 years) out of 161 respondents to the first questionnaire met the case definition for illness and cryptosporidium was detected in stools from seven of the 13. AIMS: To present an outbreak of leptospirosis on a dairy farm which had an unvaccinated herd.
METHODS: Nine people working or living on the farm were tested for the presence of leptospira antibody by the microscopic agglutination test. Nineteen cows randomly selected, were also tested.
RESULTS: Three human cases and one suspected case were detected over a one month period (December 1992-January 1993). Seventy-nine percent of the dairy herd tested had serological evidence of infection with L hardjo.

A survey on the frequency of hydatid disease in animals slaughtered in Cairo abattoir revealed that the percentage in camels, sheep, pigs, cows and buffaloes attained 31.0%, 1.33%, 4.62%, 0.0% and 0.0% respectively. Farm-related trauma occurs in more than 25,000 children per year with almost 300 patients dying from these preventable injuries. The incidence of associated farm-machinery injuries and fatalities is increasing at an alarming rate with the majority occurring in young boys during the summer months.
