Approximately 70.000 people are infected with hepatitis C virus in Hungary, more than half of whom are not aware of their infection. From the point of infected individuals early recognition and effective treatment of related liver injury may prevent consequent advanced liver diseases and complications (liver cirrhosis, liver failure and liver cancer) and can increase work productivity and life expectancy on one hand. From socioeconomic aspect, this could also prevent further spread of the virus as well as reduce substantially long term financial burden of related morbidity. Available since 200

Moving Toward Implementation of Person-Centered Care for Older Adults in Community-Based Medical and Social Service Settings: "You Only Get Things Done When Working in Concert with Clients".

Specialized, fragmented acute care is not aligned optimally to serve older adults. Person-centered care (PCC) has emerged as an evidence-based solution that involves enlisting patients as partners in treatment planning. Although several efforts have captured person-centered voices in outpatient care, more information is needed at the organizational and provider level to better understand the feasibility, challenges, and effect of PCC in community-based and social services settings. To assess themes and emerging trends, researchers conducted telephone interviews with leaders at nine organizatio

Editorial: Global elimination of lymphatic filariasis: fact or fantasy?

In 1997, the World Health Assembly resolved to eliminate lymphatic filariasis as a public health problem by the year 2020. By the end of 2004, almost half of the 83 endemic countries had initiated national programmes, providing mass drug administration to an at risk population of approximately 435 million. This remarkable achievement is the result of an enormous amount of technical, financial and political support from public and private sectors at the community, national, regional and global level. As the global programme to eliminate lymphatic filariasis enters its second quarter of operatio

Evaluating CAM education in health professions programs.

As medical, nursing, and allied health programs integrate complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) content into existing curricula, they face many of the same challenges to assessment and evaluation as do more traditional aspects of health professions education, namely, (1) specifying measurable objectives, (2) identifying valid indicators, and (3) evaluating the attainment of desired outcomes. Based on the experiences of 14 National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) education grant recipients funded between 2000 and 2003, the authors cite selected examples to illus

Lofty missions, down-to-earth plans.

Most nonprofits make program decisions based on a mission rather than a strategy. They rally under the banner of a particular cause, be it "fight homelessness" or "end hunger." And since their causes are so worthwhile, they support any programs that are related--even tangentially--to their core missions. It's hard to fault people for trying to improve the state of the world, but that approach to making decisions is misguided. Acting without a clear long-term strategy can stretch an agency's core capabilities and push it in unintended directions. The fundamental problem is that many nonprofits

WHO's special programmes: undermining from above.

Despite the World Health Organisation's spoken commitment to developing integrated primary health care, its most visible and successful activities are not integrated within countries; they are its disease specific intervention programmes, such as the Global Programme on AIDS and the programmes for the control of diarrhoeal and acute respiratory diseases. The 10 or so special programmes, all but one of which (the onchocerciasis control programme) are based in Geneva, have found increasing favour among donors, but critics say that they undermine WHO's attempts to integrate its activities at coun

[From dreaded epidemic to rare disease - smallpox in Sweden 1750-1900].

Smallpox contributed to the death of 300,000 people in Sweden between 1750 and 1800. It was one of the most feared diseases of the time. Most victims were children under the age of 10 years. It is estimated that one out of every ten children died from smallpox. The mortality rate was between 10% and 20% but those who survived faced severe complications. Most common were the disfiguring pockmarks among those previously infected. It turned out that women who had contracted smallpox married much later in life than the healthy. Also, both female and male fertility was lowered by smallpox infection

Pediatric intensive care follow-up in Germany is rarely established and highly heterogeneous: a nationwide survey of 20 PICUs.

BACKGROUND: Survival after pediatric critical illness has improved substantially, but many survivors and their families experience long-term physical, neurocognitive, psychological and social sequelae, summarized as post-intensive care syndrome in pediatrics and in families. Structured follow-up care after discharge from a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) is considered essential, yet its implementation in Germany has not been described systematically. We therefore assessed the current structures, organizational forms and barriers of PICU follow-up care in Germany. METHODS: A structural su

Epidemiological Challenges and Health Disparities in the Eastern Mediterranean Region: A Region in Crisis.

Background: The World Health Organization's (WHO) Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) is marked by socioeconomic diversity, political instability, displacement, and environmental risks. With nearly 745 million people across 22 countries, the region faces a complex "triple burden" of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), communicable diseases (CDs), and injuries. Objective: This paper provides an updated overview of the epidemiological landscape of the EMR by linking current disease burdens with socioeconomic, behavioural, environmental, and health system determinants. It highlights regional dispari

Integrating HIV/AIDS services into financial protection systems to increase sustainability of the HIV/AIDS response.

Begun in 2014, the Sustainable Financing Initiative (SFI) was dedicated to mobilizing domestic resources for the HIV response. Among its three programmatic pillars was a focus on ensuring financial protection for people living with HIV (PLHIV). SFI's activities were founded on a strong understanding of and alignment with partner government priorities, as well as costing and actuarial analyses, which allowed for the development of context-specific approaches for improving financial protection for PLHIV. SFI implemented financial protection activities in a total of nine countries; the five count

Identifying intangible assets in interprofessional healthcare organizations: feasibility of an asset inventory.

Healthcare systems increasingly use business models that focus on tangible assets such as finances and facilities. Yet intangible assets, such as values, relationships and human capital, remain critical for understanding the worth of interprofessional healthcare education and collaboration. We implemented a novel interprofessional collaborative pilot exercise to explore the feasibility and usefulness of an Asset Inventory-using KJ methodology and an appreciative inquiry perspective-to identify and better understand intangible assets and their value in interprofessional healthcare education/tra

Status report on hypertension in Africa--consultative review for the 6th Session of the African Union Conference of Ministers of Health on NCD's.

Hypertension has always been regarded as a disease of affluence but this has changed drastically in the last two decades with average blood pressures now higher in Africa than in Europe and USA and the prevalence increasing among poor sections of society. We have conducted a literature search on PubMed on a broad range of topics regarding hypertension in Africa, including data collection from related documents from World Health Organization and other relevant organizations that are available in this field. We have shared the initial results and drafts with international specialists in the cont

Access barriers to in vitro diagnostics in Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, and the Philippines: programmatic lessons from NEDL field missions.

BACKGROUND: Access to essential in vitro diagnostics (IVDs) remains limited in many low- and middle-income countries, where persistent challenges exist in financing, human resources, infrastructure, procurement, supply chain management, and health insurance arrangements. Despite growing regional initiatives, such as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Essential Diagnostics List Initiative, country-specific evidence on barriers to IVD access remains limited. This article summarizes barriers to accessing IVDs and related lessons identified from field missions conducted as part of
