BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: We aimed to evaluate the risk, causes, and compensation outcomes of avoidable injuries in pediatric hand fractures.
METHODS: All compensation claims submitted to the Finnish Patient Insurance Centre (PIC) for pediatric hand fracture treatment (< 16 years) in Finland from 1990 to 2019 were reviewed. Data collected included fracture location, compensation rate and reasons, treatment setting, and treating professional specialty. PIC decisions were reassessed. Census population (3.0 x 107) was calculated from national registers, and hand fracture incidence estimated (350/1

Injuries to children's hands with farm machinery, particularly tractors, are common in rural areas. We present 58 cases of hand injuries in children aged from 3 to 7 (mean 4.5), caused by the engine belts of agricultural vehicles, who were referred from the cities in Central Anatolia. The injury patterns among patients were similar. The injury generally starts from the middle phalanx of the third finger, crosses the proximal phalanx of the fourth finger and ends in the hypothenar region. The patients were categorised into five groups and treatment planned accordingly. The most commonly involve

Metacarpal fractures account for 10% to 35% of all pediatric hand fractures. Pediatric metacarpal fractures commonly occur in patients aged 13 to 16 years, with most injuries sustained during sports activities. Pseudoepiphyses can be confused with metacarpal fractures; however, a careful physical examination can help physicians distinguish the two. Thumb metacarpal base fractures that involve the physis warrant special attention. Thumb metacarpal base fractures with lateral metaphyseal fragments and pediatric Bennett fracture variants (Salter-Harris type III and type IV fractures) are unstable

OBJECTIVE: The closed traumatic rupture of finger flexor tendon pulleys in rock climbers appeared as a new complex finger trauma in the mid 1980s. The objectives of this study are to characterize this injury and to describe diagnostic and therapeutic guidelines. A grading system for the severity of pulley injuries was developed and used to set therapeutic pathways.
METHODS: Six hundred four injured rock climbers were prospectively evaluated from January 1998 to December 2001 with a questionnaire and standard examination protocol. Diagnostic ultrasound was performed in all rock climbers with f

BACKGROUND: Skin injuries and joint contractures in the upper limbs are observed in approximately 50 % of individuals with Rett syndrome, respectively.
AIMS: To investigate the relationship between stereotypic hand movements and purposeful hand skills, items related to these, and factors that cause upper extremity skin injuries and joint contractures in individuals with Rett syndrome.
STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a cross-sectional observational study in 2020 with families belonging to either of the two largest Rett syndrome organizations in Japan.
SUBJECTS: In 2020, we sent a questionnaire to

This retrospective study describes closed finger crush injuries in seven patients (eight fingers) in which each finger sustained a loss of blood supply. Clinical findings included numbness, decreased two-point and sharp/dull sensation, cyanosis or pallor, and decreased capillary filling. Fractures, especially transverse fractures near the proximal interphalangeal joint or distal interphalangeal joint, were usually present and often showed longitudinal crush fracture lines. Exploration and revascularization were carried out in seven fingers, all of which survived. The only finger not explored p

Hand and wrist injuries are common occurrences in amateur and professional sports and many of them are sport-specific. These can be divided into two categories: traumatic injuries and overuse injuries. The aim of this article is to review the most common hand and wrist sports-related lesions. Acute wrist injuries are predominantly bone fractures, such as those of the scaphoid, hamate hook, and ulnar styloid. Ligament lesions are more challenging for radiologists and may lead to carpal instability if undiagnosed. Overuse wrist injuries are mainly represented by tendinous disorders, with De Quer

Hand injuries are extremely prevalent in sports such as ball sports. Delayed diagnosis or improperly managed injuries have the potential to prolong the athlete's return to the competition and permanently damage their abilities. We report the case of a 35-year-old male professional basketball player who presented to a chiropractor with pain and swelling of the right fifth finger two days after a basketball game. The injury occurred when a player passed the basketball and the ball hit his fifth finger "head-on". Examination revealed enlargement of the middle joint of the right fifth finger and a

PURPOSE: Excessive flexion at the distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint disrupts the extensor mechanism, leading to mallet finger injuries. The goal of management is to restore active DIP joint extension. We sought to learn which variables (treatment technique, injury type, time to presentation, adherence to treatment) affect clinical outcomes of pediatric mallet finger injuries.
METHODS: A retrospective review was performed of patients who presented with mallet finger injuries during 2013 to 2017 at a large pediatric hospital. Patient characteristics, treatments, outcomes, and radiographic data

Traumatic injuries to the thumb are frequently associated with mutilation of one or more of the remaining digits. The most common digital injuries associated with thumb loss are partial or complete amputation of the index finger or index and long fingers. Occasionally, satisfactory index finger function will be preserved with damage or amputation of the middle or ring fingers, making them the best candidates for transposition. Although pollicization of the index finger has received considerable attention in the literature, pollicization of injured middle and ring finger remnants has not. Trans

Background: The cross-finger flap is a reliable technique for soft tissue reconstruction in finger injuries, providing pliable tissue and anatomical security. However, donor finger morbidity remains a concern. This retrospective cohort study evaluated donor-site outcomes, focussing on functional recovery and patient-reported measures. Methods: This retrospective cohort study included 30 patients who underwent cross-finger flap surgery, predominantly males (80%) aged 21-40 years, mostly manual labourers with workplace-related injuries. The index finger was most injured (48%), while the middle f

AIM: Hand trauma may lead to multiple fingertip defects, causing functional restrictions. We evaluated the use of reverse-flow homodigital flap reconstruction of the distal phalanx and pulp defects associated with multiple finger injuries.
METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 11 male patients who presented at our emergency department (January 2011-March 2013) with multiple fingertip injuries and who were treated with a reverse-flow homodigital flap. Evaluations included age, sex, defect size, flap survival rate, complications, cold intolerance, two-point discrimination, range of motion (ROM)

Fingertip injuries in the military are common and often hinder the fighting force and support personnel. Injuries range from small subungual hematomas to proximal finger amputations. Treatment modalities are dictated by injury patterns, anatomic considerations, and the need to return to duty. Nail bed injuries should be repaired when possible and exposed bone or tendon is treated with appropriate soft tissue coverage. If soft tissue coverage is unobtainable, revision amputation should be performed with attention given to maintaining as much finger length as possible. Antibiotics may not be req

RATIONALE: Mallet finger fracture is a common sports-related injury that may lead to the tearing of extensor tendon and protrusion of a bony fragment located at the base of the distal phalanx. We affirmed that the elastic fixation of with two K-wires technique is a good method to deal with Mallet Finger fractures that fractures could gain effective fixation than the conventional treatment method and avoid surgical incision complication PATIENT CONCERNS:: We reported a 33-year-old female patient came to our hospital complaining of mild pain, swelling and her right little finger was deformed bec

Background: Finger injuries caused by green onion cutting machines in Korean kitchens have unique characteristics of an incomplete amputation in which multiple parallel soft tissues and blood vessels are injured in the same form. In this study, we aimed to describe unique finger injuries and to report the treatment outcomes and experiences of performing possible soft tissue reconstructions. Methods: This case series study included 65 patients (82 fingers) from December 2011 to December 2015. The mean age was 50.5 years. We retrospectively classified the presence of fractures and the degree of

OBJECTIVES: Bowling is a popular youth sport, but despite its popularity, there is limited research on pediatric bowling-related injuries. Therefore, the purpose of the current study was to identify common injury locations and types among pediatric bowlers and assess differences in common injured body locations and diagnoses based on age and sex.
METHODS: Data were sourced from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) for the period 2014-2023, focusing on individuals 18 years old or younger. The data sourced from NEISS are raw numbers of cases, not stratified/weighted data.
