Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever outbreak in Pakistan, 2022: A warning bell amidst unprecedented floods and COVID 19 pandemic.

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is an infection caused by a tick-borne virus (genus: Nairovirus, family: Bunyaviridae). The most important vector for CCHF is the ixodid tick. Along with tick bite, direct contact with the virus-affected animal is responsible for its spread. Pakistan witnessed its first case of CCHF in 1976 and has been a major victim of CCHF for years, but spikes in cases are seen after Eid-ul-Adha, an Islamic festival involving the sacrifice of cattle. The disease, in particular, is common among butchers, veterinarians, and livestock workers. From the start of this year

A Flooding-Resistant Fluorinated Methacrylate Polymer for Enhanced CO2 Electroreduction to Ethylene.

The electrochemical reduction of CO2 to ethylene offers a sustainable approach for the chemical industry and greenhouse gas mitigation. However, the widely used perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) binder is prone to causing catalyst layer flooding due to its excessive hydrophilicity and insufficient electro-wetting resistance. To address these limitations, we introduced a fluorinated methacrylate polymer (FMP), a low-cost hydrophobic film-forming agent commonly used for protective coatings on semiconductors, as a novel hydrophobic binder into the catalyst layer. Through multiple characterizations, w

Climate-driven flooding widens economic inequalities across EU regions.

With growing consensus on the scale of climate change and its direct impacts on societies and economies, the debate on how direct climate damages cascade through interconnected economic systems eventually leading to profound indirect effects remains open amid limited quantitative evidence. The localised nature of climate risk means that regional economies may face stark differences in how they are impacted by the direct and indirect physical risks. In Europe, the world's fastest warming continent, concentrated local damages spill over asymmetrically into tightly-interconnected regional markets

Non-linear failure patterns in urban road networks exposed to flooding.

Urban road networks are highly sensitive to flooding, yet the systemic consequences of inundation on their structural and functional organization remain insufficiently understood. This study introduces a scale-independent analytical framework that integrates complex network measures such as degree, closeness, and betweenness centrality with community-structure analysis to quantify how flooding transforms network connectivity, accessibility, and mesoscale cohesion. This study assesses the impact of river flooding on the urban road network under two scenarios: a 100-year return period flood and

Beyond the floodwaters: women's multidimensional vulnerability to flood disasters - a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Flood disasters, intensified by climate change, are increasing in frequency and severity globally, disproportionately affecting vulnerable populations, particularly women. Women's vulnerability during flood disasters extends beyond biological or physical differences and is shaped by broader social, economic, cultural, and institutional conditions. However, synthesised evidence on women's vulnerabilities in flood contexts remains limited. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted using the Arksey and O'Malley framework and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta

Probabilistic urban flood prediction with multivariate assimilation of sewer and surface observations.

Aging drainage infrastructure and intensifying rainfall are increasing urban flood risk. However, few data assimilation studies in urban flooding jointly consider rainfall uncertainty, drainage-system degradation, and observation-network configuration within a unified framework. We develop a probabilistic urban flood prediction framework that couples a 1D-2D hydrodynamic model with particle-filter data assimilation (DA), jointly integrating surface inundation depths and sewer water levels. Synthetic experiments conducted for an urban catchment testbed in Osaka, Japan evaluate how observation t

Multi-indicator assessment of flood impacts on private well water quality.

Floods pose significant risks to groundwater quality, particularly for households relying on private wells. This study investigates the vulnerability of private wells completed in fractured crystalline bedrock aquifers in a small watershed near Quebec City (Canada), to surface water intrusion and microbiological contamination during and after flood events. The study hypothesis was that flood events promote these processes in vulnerable private wells, with contrasting responses between non-floodplain and floodplain settings. Thirteen wells and three surface water sites were monitored over 1.5 y

Assessment of climate-driven flood risks and damages in the Kashkan River floodplain.

Flood losses in semi-arid Iran are expected to increase under climate change, yet quantitative projections remain limited for many interior basins. This study develops an integrated framework combining statistically downscaled CMIP6 projections, a hybrid HEC-HMS and LSTM rainfall-runoff model, non-stationary flood frequency analysis, one-dimensional HEC-RAS hydraulic modeling, and the DamageScanner module to appraise potential future fluvial flood economic damage and risk in the Kashkan River basin. Changes in flood frequency, intensity, inundation extent, and economic damages were assessed un

Integrating flood loss data into an empirical model for community estimates of risk.

With an increase and intensification of tropical storm events in the future, it becomes paramount for individual communities and homeowners to understand their potential risks of impacts from these events. This study describes an empirical modeling methodology using the City of Norfolk in southeastern Virginia to indicate areas of higher risk based on built infrastructure, property exposure, and temporal records of previous losses. Under this new empirical modeling methodology, a risk score is defined as the properties that may be at higher risk from future flooding events based on elevation d

How extreme rainfall and failing dams unleashed the Derna flood disaster.

On September 11, 2023, Storm Daniel unleashed unprecedented rainfall over the Wadi Derna watershed, triggering one of the most devastating floods in modern history, striking Derna, a coastal city in Libya. This study reconstructs the disaster using an integrated modeling approach that combines satellite imagery, hydrologic, hydraulic, and geotechnical simulations, machine learning, eyewitness accounts, and digital elevation data to assess the impact of cascading dam failures. Our findings reveal that the region's dams, even if structurally sound, would have provided minimal protection against

Recommendations for protecting against epidemic diseases in Morocco following recent flooding.

The recent floods in Morocco, occurring from September 16 to September 30, 2024, have created significant public health challenges, particularly in the regions of Tata, Ouarzazate, and Errachidia. These flooding events have heightened the risk of epidemic diseases, including vector-borne diseases like malaria and leishmaniasis, as well as waterborne infections. This letter outlines critical recommendations to mitigate these risks, including enhanced epidemiological surveillance, distribution of insecticidetreated nets, targeted vector control programs, and community engagement. Additionally, i

Eastern Australian estuaries will transition to tidal flood regimes in coming decades.

Tidal flooding occurs when coastal water levels exceed impact-based flood thresholds due to tides alone, under average weather conditions. Transitions to tidal flood regimes are already underway for nuisance flood severities in harbours and bays and expected for higher severities in coming decades. In the first such regional assessment, we show that the same transition to tidally forced floods can also be expected to occur in Australian estuaries with less than 0.1 m further sea-level rise. Flood thresholds that historically used to only be exceeded under the combined effects of riverine (fres

The Effect of Design Rainfall Patterns on Urban Flooding Based on the Chicago Method.

Design rainfall is the basis for deriving design floods in areas where rainfall data are lacking and has a significant impact on the construction of water engineering facilities and municipal engineering designs. The Chicago rainfall pattern method has great applicability for urban short-duration design rainfall. In order to analyze the influence of design storm rainfall patterns on urban flooding, numerical models of hydrological and hydrodynamic processes were applied to simulate design rainfall with different recurrence periods and different rain peaks and were also used to compare and anal
