In December, 2019, a highly infectious and rapidly spreading new pneumonia of unknown cause was reported to the Chinese WHO Country Office. A cluster of these cases had appeared in Wuhan, a city in the Hubei Province of China. These infections were found to be caused by a new coronavirus which was given the name "2019 novel coronavirus" (2019-nCoV). It was later renamed "severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2," or SARS-CoV-2 by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses on February 11, 2020. It was named SARS-CoV-2 due to its close genetic similarity to the coronavirus which c

In view of the new viral COVID-19 pandemic, the fungal Candida auris epidemic still in progress worldwide highlights non-Candida albicans candidal infections. We describe an immunocompetent woman with a cutaneous manifestation of Candida parasilopsis fungemia, a prominent eschar, which proved to be the nidus for the candidemia. We stress the value of selectively removing eschars. C. parasilopsis and C. auris are increasingly important causes of sepsis and wound infections. We emphasize that commercially available biochemical-based tests may misidentify C. auris as C. parapsilosis, and stress t

Pathogens often follow more than one transmission route during outbreaks-from needle sharing plus sexual transmission of HIV to small droplet aerosol plus fomite transmission of influenza. Thus, controlling an infectious disease outbreak often requires characterizing the risk associated with multiple mechanisms of transmission. For example, during the Ebola virus outbreak in West Africa, weighing the relative importance of funeral versus health care worker transmission was essential to stopping disease spread. As a result, strategic policy decisions regarding interventions must rely on accurat

BACKGROUND: The magnitude of the 2013-2016 Ebola virus disease outbreak in West Africa was unprecedented, with >28 500 reported cases and >11 000 deaths. Understanding the key elements of Ebola virus transmission is necessary to implement adequate infection prevention and control measures to protect healthcare workers and halt transmission in the community.
METHODS: We performed an extensive PubMed literature review encompassing the period from discovery of Ebola virus, in 1976, until 1 June 2016 to evaluate the evidence on modes of Ebola virus shedding and transmission.
FINDINGS: Ebola viru

Characterizing infectivity as a function of pathogen dose is integral to microbial risk assessment. Dose-response experiments usually administer doses to subjects at one time. Phenomenological models of the resulting data, such as the exponential and the Beta-Poisson models, ignore dose timing and assume independent risks from each pathogen. Real world exposure to pathogens, however, is a sequence of discrete events where concurrent or prior pathogen arrival affects the capacity of immune effectors to engage and kill newly arriving pathogens. We model immune effector and pathogen interactions

Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, is the site of the only two recognized outbreaks of primary pneumonic tularemia in the United States. Beginning in 2000 and continuing through 2006, 59 presumed or confirmed tularemia cases have been reported from Martha's Vineyard, with more than 60% of these presumed to be due to inhalation of the agent. A joint CDC/Massachusetts Department of Public Health case-control study identified landscaping activities such as lawnmowing or brush cutting to be important risk factors. The fomites that serve as the basis for risk for landscapers, however, remain unident

BACKGROUND: The modes of transmission of genital human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in children are controversial. Studies have varied in reporting suspicion of sexual abuse in children with condylomata acuminata from zero to 90.9%. Possible modes of transmission include sexual, from mother to infant in utero, passage through an infected birth canal, infection of a nongenital type virus to the genital area, and nonsexual acquisition from a fomite.
METHODS: Seven children, ranging in age from 2 to 12 years, who had genital HPV infections were assessed for sexual abuse. An interview with each

Pediculosis capitis, caused by Pediculus humanus var. capitis, is a common ectoparasitic infestation primarily affecting school-aged children worldwide. It is transmitted through direct head-to-head contact and occasionally via fomites. Although it is not a vector for diseases, it causes significant psychosocial and economic burdens, including scalp itching, parental anxiety, absenteeism and social stigma. The head louse life cycle includes egg, nymph and adult stages, with the entire cycle completed in 21-30 days. Diagnosis is based on identifying live lice or viable eggs, often aided by wet

BACKGROUND: Exposure to animal and human feces in the household environment is associated with diarrheal diseases in young children. The objective of this study was to identify exposure pathways to fecal pathogens for young children that are significant contributors to diarrheal disease to allow for targeted water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) interventions on these pathways.
METHODS: The WASHmobile Preventative Intervention for Cholera for 7 Days prospective cohort study was conducted in urban Bukavu, South Kivu province, Democratic Republic of the Congo. The cohort study of 794 children u

Since 2020, there has been unprecedented global spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N1) in wild bird populations with spillover into a variety of mammalian species and sporadically humans1. In March 2024, clade 2.3.4.4b A(H5N1) virus was first detected in dairy cattle in the USA, with subsequent detection in numerous states2, leading to more than a dozen confirmed human cases3,4. In this study, we used the ferret, a well-characterized animal model that permits concurrent investigation of viral pathogenicity and transmissibility5, in the evaluation of A/Texas/37/2024 (TX/37) A(H5N1)

Transmission of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) occurs through respiratory droplets passed directly from person to person or indirectly through fomites, such as common use surfaces or objects. The aim of this study was to determine the virucidal efficacy of blue LED (405 nm) and far-UVC (222 nm) light in comparison to standard UVC (254 nm) irradiation for the inactivation of feline infectious peritonitis virus (FIPV) on different matrices as a model for SARS-CoV-2. Wet or dried FIPV on stainless steel, plastic, or paper discs, in the presence or absence of arti

COVID-19 is caused by a novel beta coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) strain that was first discovered in 2019 in the Wuhan city of China. Based on virus genome sequencing studies, the bat is suspected as the natural host of virus, and infection might be transmitted from bats via unknown intermediate hosts like reptiles and snakes etc., to infect humans. COVID-19 is transmitted from person to person contact, primarily via droplet infection within the incubation period or after clinical manifestations of fever, cough, sneezing, sputum, dyspnea, and pneumonia and through contaminated fomites. COVID-19 ent

Routine testing of bedding sentinels from a barrier room revealed one mouse seropositive to ectromelia virus (EV). Results of hemagglutination-inhibition testing and western blot analysis were confirmatory for orthopoxvirus antibodies. Additional seropositive animals were not identified. Interviews indicated that replication-competent vaccinia virus (VV), Western Reserve strain (VV-WR), recently had been given to mice. Although VV-WR was not expected to spread by contact or via fomites, the case evidence suggested transmission of vaccinia via soiled bedding. In a follow-up experiment, 15 index

BACKGROUND: Body piercing enjoys a widespread popularity among juveniles and young people. The tongue is the most commonly pierced oral site. Tongue jewellery, however, can damage the teeth and periodontium and may provide an ideal environment for microorganisms. The aim of this report was to investigate if and in case in which amount periodontopathogenic organisms can be found at tongue piercing sites.
METHODS: Patients with tongue piercings visiting the authors' dental office for a dental check-up volunteered. A questionnaire was used to collect data on the type of material used in the pier

The growing proximity and contact between companion animals and humans underscore the significant public health risk of zoonotic spillover, a core concern of the One Health framework. Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS), an emerging tick-borne zoonosis of increasing incidence, is capable of direct animal-to-human transmission; however, evidence detailing its transmission within households remains limited. This study documents a transmission chain involving a domestic dog, two owners, and a cohabiting cat. The owners developed symptoms approximately one week after exposure to the

Rabbit hemorrhagic disease (RHD) is a highly contagious viral infection in rabbits that can occur in acute, subacute, chronic, or peracute forms and is not fatal. It is caused by RHD virus (RHDV), a member of the genus Lagovirus in the family Caliciviridae, with variants including RHDV1, RHDV1a, and RHDV2. First identified in 1984 in domestic rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) in China, RHD has since been reported in Asia, Europe, Africa, Central America, and North America. Both innate and adaptive immune responses contribute to host defense, although rapid disease progression can limit adaptive

Influenza viruses (INFV), the Orthomyxoviridae family, are mainly transmitted among humans via aerosols or droplets from the respiratory secretions. However, fomites could be a potential transmission pathway. Annually, seasonal INFV infections account for 290-650 thousand deaths worldwide. Currently, there are two classes of approved drugs to treat INFV infections, being neuraminidase (NA) inhibitors and blockers of matrix-2 (M2) ion channel. However, cases of resistance have been observed for both chemical classes, reducing the efficacy of treatment. The emergence of influenza outbreaks and p
