BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Fear of missing out (FoMO) describes the concern of missing out on a rewarding experience, a contemporary psychological phenomenon that has yet to be explored in relation to addictive eating. This exploratory study examined the relationship between FoMO and addictive eating, and the effect of reward-related eating and mental health status (anxiety, depression, and stress) on the relationship.
METHODS: A sample of 227 adults (mean age 49.4 years; 79.3% women) completed an online survey to assess addictive eating (Yale Food Addiction Scale), FoMO (Fear of Missing Out Scal

Dopamine D3 receptor ligands are potential medications for psychostimulant addiction. Medication assessment may benefit from preclinical studies that evaluate chronic medication effects on choice between an abused drug and an alternative, nondrug reinforcer. This study compared acute and chronic effects of dopamine D2- and D3-preferring ligands on choice between intravenous cocaine and palatable food in rats. Under baseline conditions, cocaine maintained dose-dependent increases in cocaine choice and reciprocal decreases in food choice. Acutely, the D2 agonist R-(-)-norpropylapomorphine (NPA)

In this essay we want to foreground a question: what happens to 'addiction' when we take seriously cultural scripts informing its trajectories? Can this bring us to unthink addiction as problematic notion and move it onto new paradigms that fit better the now acknowledged fluidity and pluralistic episteme of 'addiction' and more broadly of chronic life conditions? Indeed, 'addiction' has become a pivotal concept in the contemporary world. A powerful diagnostic framework in interpreting human behaviour, for some 'addiction' has become the 'new normal' with chronic relations with different thing

Clinicians have prescribed benzodiazepines for a range of symptoms and conditions since the Food and Drug Administration approved chlordiazepoxide in 1960. Between 1969 and 1982, the benzodiazepine diazepam was the most prescribed medication in the United States. Since then, recognition of benzodiazepine's risks-such as falls, psychomotor and cognitive impairment, withdrawal, benzodiazepine use disorder (BzUD), and suicidality-and limited data on long-term safety and efficacy have created challenges for clinicians and patients, including when and how to safely taper these medications. In 2025,

Psoriasis is a chronic skin disease with a high mental burden. Well-known comorbidities include depression, anxiety, as well as alcohol and tobacco addiction, however, there is barely any evidence on other addictions. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of the six most common addictions among psoriasis patients in Germany and to determine associated clinical factors. Dermatologists working in four dermatological clinics and 32 practices across Germany recruited patients between September 2018 and November 2019. This cross-sectional study contained questionnaires on six addicti

The reward system is highly relevant to behavioral addictions such as gambling disorder (GD), internet gaming disorder (IGD), and food addiction/binge eating disorder (FA/BED). Among other brain regions, the ventral striatum (VS) has been implicated in reward processing. The main objective of the present state-of-the-art review was to explore in depth the specific role of the VS in GD, IGD and FA/BED, understanding it as a possible biomarker of these conditions. Studies analyzing brain changes following interventions for these disorders, and especially those that had explored possible treatmen

Despite decades of research, few medications have gained Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for the management of substance abuse disorder. The paucity of successful medications can be attributed, in part, to the lack of clearly identified neurobiological targets for addressing the core pathology of addictive behavior. Commonalities in the behavioral and brain processes involved in the rewarding effects of drugs and foods has prompted the evaluation of candidate medications that target neural pathways involved in both drug and eating disorders. Here, pharmacological strategies for the

RATIONALE: Substance abuse is more prevalent among patients with schizophrenia than in the general population. The considerable overlap in neurobiological disruptions thought to underlie each condition suggests that addictive behavior may represent a primary symptom of schizophrenia.
OBJECTIVE: This study investigated drug-seeking in a neurodevelopmental animal model of schizophrenia, the neonatal ventral hippocampal lesion (NVHL) model.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: At postnatal day 7, rats received an excitotoxic ventral hippocampus lesion or a sham procedure and were trained as adults to self-ad

Cocaine addiction is a psychosocial disorder induced by the chronic use of cocaine and causes a large number of deaths around the world. Despite decades of effort, no drugs have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of cocaine dependence. Cocaine dependence is neurological and involves many interacting proteins in the interactome. Among them, the dopamine (DAT), serotonin (SERT), and norepinephrine (NET) transporters are three major targets. Each of these targets has a large protein-protein interaction (PPI) network, which must be considered in the anticocai

No anti-cocaine addiction drugs have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration despite decades of effort. The main challenge is the intricate molecular mechanisms of cocaine addiction, involving synergistic interactions among proteins upstream and downstream of the dopamine transporter. However, it is difficult to study so many proteins with traditional experiments, highlighting the need for innovative strategies in the field. We propose a proteome-informed machine learning (ML) platform for discovering nearly optimal anti-cocaine addiction lead compounds. We analyze proteomic protein-

Plastic changes in the nucleus accumbens (NAcc), a structure occupying a key position in the neural circuitry related to motivation, are among the critical cellular processes responsible for drug addiction. During the last decade, it has been shown that memory formation and related neuronal plasticity may rely not only on protein synthesis but also on protein degradation by the ubiquitin proteasome system (UPS). In this study, we assess the role of protein degradation in the NAcc in opiate-related behaviors. For this purpose, we coupled behavioral experiments to intra-accumbens injections of l

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Hedonic hunger (HH) occurs when individuals are driven to consume highly palatable food for pleasure, rather than to satisfy a caloric need. Currently, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition (DSM-5) does not recognize HH as a use disorder. Previous research has noted physiological, neurobiological, and treatment similarities between HH, binge eating behavior and substance use, leading to the speculation of the existence of food addiction (FA). The purpose of the current review was to explore the literature on the developmental similari

BACKGROUND: Given growing evidence of overlap in characteristics of addictive substances and highly processed foods (e.g., ice cream), transdiagnostic approaches may be appropriate. Prior work indicates youth with parents who use addictive substances are at risk for greater substance use. The current study tested hypotheses that parental substance use behaviors would prospectively predict greater youth highly processed food intake [but not minimally processed food intake (e.g., fruit)].
METHODS: The Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study was a longitudinal birth cohort study of youth (N =

For more than half a century, since the beginning of formal diagnostics, our psychiatric nosology has compartmentalized the compulsive pursuit of substance (e.g., alcohol, cocaine, heroin, nicotine) from nonsubstance (e.g., gambling, food, sex) rewards. Emerging brain, behavioral, and genetic findings challenge this diagnostic boundary, pointing to shared vulnerabilities underlying the pathological pursuit of substance and nonsubstance rewards. Working groups for the fifth revision of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition (DSM-V), are thus considering whether

The striatum controls food-related actions and consumption and is linked to feeding disorders, including obesity and anorexia nervosa. Two populations of neurons project from the striatum: direct pathway medium spiny neurons and indirect pathway medium spiny neurons. The selective contribution of direct pathway medium spiny neurons and indirect pathway medium spiny neurons to food-related actions and consumption remains unknown. Here, we used in vivo electrophysiology and fiber photometry in mice (of both sexes) to record both spiking activity and pathway-specific calcium activity of dorsal st

An important body of literature suggests that exerting intense cognitive effort causes mental fatigue and can lead to unhealthy behaviors such as indulging in high-calorie food and taking drugs. Whereas this effect has been mostly explained in terms of weakening cognitive control, cognitive effort may also bias behavioral choices by amplifying the hedonic and emotional impact of rewards. We report parallel findings with animals and humans supporting this hypothesis. In rats, exerting cognitive effort immediately before access to cocaine self-administration significantly increased drug intake.

Is starvation in anorexia nervosa (AN) or overeating in bulimia nervosa (BN) a form of addiction? Alternatively, why are individuals with BN more vulnerable and individuals with AN protected from substance abuse? Such questions have been generated by recent studies suggesting that there are overlapping neural circuits for foods and drugs of abuse. To determine whether a shared neurobiology contributes to eating disorders and substance abuse, this review focused on imaging studies that investigated response to tastes of food and tasks designed to characterize reward and behavioral inhibition in

The review examines the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the prevalence, manifestation, as well as the possibility of preventing and treating behavioral (non-chemical) addictions. Particular attention is paid to various manifestations of Internet addiction (IA): gaming, gambling, cybersexual and food addiction (FA). During the pandemic, Internet use increased significantly, leading to an increase in IA, mainly due to gaming, which correlated with the level of psychosocial problems. The increase in gambling occurred mainly in individuals with addiction or risk groups, while in the population
