Foot Deformities in Hajdu-Cheney Syndrome: A Rare Case Report and Review of the Literature.

INTRODUCTION: Hajdu-Cheney syndrome (HCS) is a rare autosomal dominant disease characterized by acroosteolysis, wormian skull bones with persistent skull sutures, premature loss of teeth, micrognathia, short stature, hypermobility of the joints, neurologic manifestations such as basilar invagination with subsequent paresthesia, hearing loss, and speech alterations, and osteoporosis with tendency to pathologic fractures of long bones and vertebrae as well as painful hands and feet. Very few cases have been earlier reported in the literature. CASE REPORT: We report a case of a 50-year-old femal

Taylor spatial frame in severe foot deformities using double osteotomy: technical approach and primary results.

PURPOSE: The treatment of severe foot deformities in children or adolescents is complex and demanding to the surgeon. This paper describes the technical strategy of using a Taylor spatial frame and reports on the functional outcome. METHODS: The Taylor spatial frame was used by a single surgeon in patients with severe foot deformities. Seven patients with eight severe deformities were treated. Mean patient age at surgery was 15.1 (9-29) years. A double Taylor spatial frame reconstruction was mounted to the limb. All patients had a midtarsal osteotomy and an additional inverse dome-shaped calc

[Progression of foot deformities in rheumatoid arthritis--a radiologic follow-up study over 5 years].

OBJECTIVE: The typical changes of the foot in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are the rear foot valgus and the flattening of the longitudinal arch as well as the splayfoot with hallux valgus and little toe deformities. These foot deformities are not so much a cosmetic problem, but are very painful and limit the patient's mobility. METHODS: The progression of rheumatic foot deformities with a follow-up of five years was described in 36 patients (70 feet) with RA and an average duration of the disease of 19.2 years (+/- 9.8 years). The analysis was based on standardized X-rays of the fe

Foot deformities associated with onycho-osteodysplasia. A familial study and a review of associated features.

A family, of which thirteen members suffered from hereditary onycho-osteodysplasia (HOOD), is presented. Four of the thirteen patients also had foot deformities, and it is postulated that this anomaly may be a true part of the HOOD syndrome, and not just an incidental finding.

Pathology of congenital metatarsus varus and its relationship to other congenital deformities of the foot.

Congenital metatarsus varus may be regarded as a deformity caused by a dislocation and in that respect is similar to congenital clubfoot and vertical talus but not to calcaneovalgus. The dislocation causes adaptive bone changes as well as secondary contracture of the soft tissues. That the dislocation in the forepart of the foot may occur in a maximally dorsiflexed foot also may explain the valgus position of the hindfoot. The secondary changes in bone and soft tissue may explain the lack of spontaneous recovery and the difficulties in effecting correction in severe cases. It is still not poss

Congenital metatarsus varus. A suggestion for a possible mechanism and relation to other foot deformities.

The pathogenesis of metatarsus varus was investigated by a series of dissections of 14 normal feet of stillborn or infants who died during the perinatal period. The deformity could not be produced without the surgical incisions described below. A valgus position of the hindfoot was produced by maximal dorsiflexion of the foot. The deformity of the fore part of the foot could not be produced even by extreme traction on the tibialis anterior tendon even after capsulotomy of the first tarsometatarsal joint. Only extensive capsulotomies in the tarsometatarsal joints distal to the joint of Chopart

Is the Apert foot an overlooked aspect of this rare genetic disease? Clinical findings and treatment options for foot deformities in Apert syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Apert syndrome is characterised by the presence of craniosynostosis, midface retrusion and syndactyly of hands and feet, thus, synonymously referred to as acrocephalosyndactyly type I. Considering these multidisciplinary issues, frequently requiring surgical interventions at an early age, deformities of the feet have often been neglected and seem to be underestimated in the management of Apert syndrome. Typical Apert foot features range from complete fusion of the toes and a central nail mass to syndactyly of the second to fifth toe with a medially deviated great toe; however, no c

Functional, Radiological, and Biomechanical Outcomes Following Deformity-Driven Multilevel Surgical Correction for Fixed Cavovarus Foot Deformity.

BACKGROUND: Fixed cavovarus foot deformity is characterised by a plantar-flexed first ray, hindfoot varus, and abnormal plantar loading, often resulting in pain, instability, and gait dysfunction. The surgical correction we performed involved a deformity-driven approach to address the structural apex and associated components. Evidence linking this multilevel correction strategy to objective biomechanical improvement remains limited. METHODS: This prospective case series evaluated outcomes following a uniform deformity-driven multilevel surgical correction protocol for fixed cavovarus deformi

Treatment of Cleft Foot Deformity using Fish Mouth Incision and Suture-Button in Paediatric Foot: A case report.

Cleft foot is a congenital anomaly characterised by absence of the metatarsal bones and phalanges. It is commonly seen in children with ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-clefting syndrome ranging from a median cleft up to the mid metatarsals to a deep cleft up to the tarsal bones. Surgical treatment in the form of cleft closure, excision of the rudimentary metatarsal bone and cross K-wire fixation of metatarsal bones have been tried for the management of such cases. We report a one-year-old child who presented to the paediatric orthopaedic clinic at a medical college in New Delhi, India, in 20

Correction of ankle and hind foot deformity in Charcot neuroarthropathy using a retrograde hind foot nail-The Kings' Experience.

BACKGROUND: Corrective fusion for the unstable deformed hind foot and mid foot in Charcot Neuroarthropathy (CN) is quite challenging and is best done in tertiary centres under the supervision of multidisciplinary teams. METHODS: We present a follow up to our initial report with a series of 42 hind foot corrections in 40 patients from a tertiary level teaching hospital in the United Kingdom. The mean patient age was 59 (33-82). 17 patients had type1diabetes mellitus, 23 had type 2. 23 feet in 22 patients had chronic ulceration despite offloading. 17 patients were ASA 2 and 23 were ASA grade 3.

Treatment of complex foot deformities with hexapod external fixator in growing children and young adult patients.

BACKGROUND: Treatment of complex foot deformities in growing children and young adult patients is challenging. The traditional approach consists of extensive soft tissues releases, osteotomies and/or arthrodesis. More recently, distraction osteogenesis has been proposed as an alternative strategy. The aim of this study was to describe our treatment strategy and report clinical outcomes of the patients affected from complex foot deformities treated by distraction osteogenesis and hexapod external fixator. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 10 consecutive patients with complex f

Incidence and type of foot deformities in patients with spina bifida according to level of lesion.

AIM: The previously suggested association between the incidence of high-level foot deformity and muscle imbalance is no longer supported, when evaluated independent from motor and sensory loss and level of lesion, by current studies. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between level of lesion and foot deformity. METHODS: Of 545 patients, a total of 136 (272 feet) patients admitted to the spina bifida clinic between 2010 and 2014 were included in this study. Levels of all lesions were evaluated using initial operation data, the motor-sensory exams, and direct radiography.

Assessment and Treatment of Varus Foot Deformity in Children with Cerebral Palsy: A Review.

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a developmental disability caused by injury to the fetal or infant brain, affecting between 1.6 to 3.7 per 1000 live births worldwide. Ambulatory patients with cerebral palsy experience various gait problems, for which they seek treatment from medical professionals. Varus foot deformities are among the most problematic for patients. Varus foot deformity is characterized by the inner border of the foot being tilted upward and the hindfoot inward, increasing weightbearing on the lateral aspect of the foot. This positioning increases weight-bearing pressure under the latera

Update on Adult Acquired Flat Foot Deformity Using MR Imaging.

Adult acquired flatfoot deformity (AAFD) is a progressive condition characterized by collapse of the medial longitudinal arch, pain, and functional impairment. It predominantly affects middle-aged women and is associated with obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and anatomic variants. MR imaging is the gold standard for evaluating osseous, tendinous, and ligamentous structures, enabling accurate diagnosis and staging. This review summarizes the role of MR imaging in AAFD, detailing normal anatomy, pathophysiological mechanisms, classification systems, and advanced imaging protocols. Key MR imaging

Talocalcaneal Ligament Reconstruction Kinematic Simulation for Progressive Collapsing Foot Deformity.

BACKGROUND: In progressive collapsing foot deformity (PCFD), an internal and plantar rotation of the talus relative to the calcaneus may result in painful peritalar subluxation. Medial soft tissue procedures (eg, spring ligament repair) aim to correct the talar position via the navicular bone if bony correction alone is not sufficient. The effect of the medial soft tissue reconstruction on the talar reposition remains unclear. We hypothesized that a subtalar talocalcaneal ligament reconstruction might be favorable in PCFD to correct talar internal malposition directly. This pilot study aims to

The contribution of the ligaments in progressive collapsing foot deformity: A comprehensive computational study.

The contribution of each of the ligaments in preventing the arch loss, hindfoot valgus, and forefoot abduction seen in progressive collapsing foot deformity (PCFD) has not been well characterized. An improved understanding of the individual ligament contributions to the deformity would aid in selecting among available treatments, optimizing current surgical techniques, and developing new ones. In this study, we evaluated the contribution of each ligament to the maintenance of foot alignment using a finite element model of the foot reconstructed from computed tomography scan images. The collaps
