COVID-19 has disproportionally affected people living in poverty; new immigrants; and those living in healthcare settings (hospitals, clinics, and nursing homes), shelters, detention centers, and prisons. The pandemic has also significantly impacted social workers who face hidden mental health consequences. The resultant feelings and behaviors are similar to disaster-induced trauma, including excessive rumination, hypervigilance, exhaustion, and excessive crying as a result of the adrenaline-driven fight-or-flight response. This article aims to provide information for social workers to protect

Population aging in the Philippines requires innovative, community-based approaches to strengthen geriatric care delivery. This article highlights the potential of Barangay Health Workers as frontline partners in promoting healthy aging through early detection, chronic disease monitoring, and coordinated referral services. Expanding BHW roles through standardized training and policy support can address gaps in geriatric healthcare access. A strengthened community health workforce can contribute to an age-responsive and sustainable Philippine healthcare system.

INTRODUCTION: Healthcare workers (HCWs) are continuously exposed to stress and potentially traumatic experiences, as during the COVID-19 pandemic. This research aims to investigate the correlates and predictors of Post-traumatic growth (PTG), a positive outcome following adversity, in a group of HCWs during the COVID-19 pandemic.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional design.
METHODS: The sample included 168 HCWs (almost 43% were nurses working in hospitals or aging facilities) who were assessed with the PTG Inventory (PTGI) and other indicators of psychological distress (DASS-21) and well-being such as th

BACKGROUND: Pakistan’s 2025 monsoon floods created extreme humanitarian demands, exposing frontline relief workers to sustained trauma, hazardous conditions, and challenging safety resources. While post-traumatic stress among disaster survivors in Pakistan is documented, little evidence exists regarding responders. This study assessed post-traumatic stress symptoms among flood-relief workers and examined factors associated with elevated Impact of Event Scale–Revised (IES-R) scores. METHODS: A cross-sectional analytical survey was conducted in September to October 2025 among verified frontline

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged everyone's adaptive resources. However, a limited number of studies have examined its effects on mental health workers, a population at increased risk for vicarious traumatization.
METHODS: A mediation model was tested using longitudinal self-report data (N=1597). The association among occupation, severity of trauma-related and stressor-related (TSR) symptoms during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, and self-efficacy was explored.
RESULTS: Mental health workers reported greater self-efficacy than other survey participants (health care w

U.S. home healthcare agencies provide essential care to homebound patients, primarily older adults at high risk for infection. The COVID-19 pandemic intensified existing infection prevention and control challenges, particularly among marginalized communities. This qualitative study explored unique infection prevention and control challenges faced by agencies and differences in responses among those serving vulnerable populations. Ten agencies representing diverse geographic regions, ownership models, and patient characteristics participated; 25 staff across varied roles completed semi-structur

OBJECTIVES: Burnout rates are alarmingly high among healthcare workers, particularly emergency staff, where rates reach 60%. A systems-level intervention is necessary to deviate from the current trajectory and protect future healthcare workers from the same outcome. We aimed to understand the personal and professional impacts of participating in emergency department-led Schwartz Rounds-a structured group sharing event-on Canadian healthcare workers.

The current monkeypox outbreak reawakens the concern that poxviridae have a high potential for zoonotic spillover and causing a pandemic. Much fieldwork and research have been done by health care and public health workers in Africa during previous human outbreaks, and their knowledge should inform our global response to the current outbreak. However, unusual clinical presentations now have potential implications for recognizing the disease. In addition, infections from poxviridae, such as monkeypox, have common cutaneous signs that occur early, may be related to periods of transmissibility, an

Burnout has recently been identified as a disorder by the World Health Organization. Although helping professions are the most exposed to burnout, there is a lack of research on work-related stress in social service workers, such as frontline workers in homeless services. The aim of this study is to evaluate burnout in a sample of Italian providers working in homelessness services, exploring the differences between traditional services and Housing First. Burnout was measured through the Link Burnout Questionnaire, consisting of four dimensions investigating Psychophysical exhaustion, Depersona

OBJECTIVE: This longitudinal study examined changes in psychological outcomes of perioperative frontline healthcare workers at one of Australia's most COVID-19 affected hospitals, following the surge and decline of a pandemic wave.
METHOD: A single-centred longitudinal online survey was conducted between 26 May and 17 November 2020. Recruitment was via poster advertisement and email invitation. The survey was sent out every 4 weeks, resulting in seven time-points.
RESULTS: In total, 385 survey results were analysed from 193 staff (about 64% response rate), 72 (37%) of whom completed the surv

People vulnerable to mental health problems during the COVID-19 outbreak include hospitalized patients and frontline health professionals; mostly reported discomforts include: insomnia, anxiety and depression. Under strict infection measures, non-essential personnel such as clinical psychiatrists and psychologists are strongly discouraged from entering isolation wards; therefore, frontline health-care workers become the main personnel providing psychological interventions to patients in hospitals without knowing how to mitigate patient distress. Health personnel do not receive adequate care fo

BACKGROUND: Global calls for renewed efforts to address stillbirth burden highlighted areas for policy and implementation resulting in national level translations. Information regarding adapted strategies to effect policy objectives into service delivery by frontline health workers remains scanty especially at subnational level. The study explored strategies prioritized to mitigate stillbirth risk in the context of operationalizing recommendations from the global campaigns at a subnational level in Uganda.

INTRODUCTION: Disease outbreaks cause widespread suffering, loss of lives and significantly increase the risk of mental health and psychosocial problems. Although mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) plays a critical role in addressing the needs of populations affected by outbreaks, limited efforts have been made to integrate MHPSS into outbreak response mechanisms. In this study, we developed, implemented and evaluated priority MHPSS interventions to examine acceptability, feasibility and perceived benefit of MHPSS interventions as part of outbreak response in Uganda.
