Prevalence of enteric bacterial parasites with respect to anthropogenic factors among commensal rhesus macaques in Dehradun, India.

There has been a recent surge in research on primate infectious disease ecology. Two major areas remain relatively unaddressed to date-the prevalence of enteric bacterial parasites and the role of anthropogenic environmental factors in parasite acquisition in commensally living primate populations. In this preliminary assessment, we address both these gaps by assessing the prevalence, and the role of anthropogenic factors in shaping this prevalence, of three enteric bacterial parasites-E . coli O157:H7, Salmonella sp., Shigella sp.-across populations of rhesus macaques (M. mulatta) that live c

When your arm becomes mine: pathological embodiment of alien limbs using tools modulates own body representation.

Previous evidence has shown that active tool-use can reshape one's own body schema, extend peripersonal space and modulate the representation of related body parts. Here we investigate the effect of tool-use training on length representation of the contralesional forearm in brain-damaged hemiplegic patients who manifested a pathological embodiment of other people body parts. Four patients and 20 aged-matched healthy-controls were asked to estimate the mid-point of their contralesional forearm before and after 15 min of tool-use training (i.e. retrieving targets with a garbage plier). In the ca

Practice, awareness and opinion of pharmacists toward disposal of unwanted medications in Kuwait.

BACKGROUND: The disposal of unwanted medications has been a concern in many countries, as pharmaceutical waste enters the ecosystem, ultimately having an effect on human health and environment. Earlier studies in Kuwait found that the method of disposal by the public was by disposing in the garbage or by flushing down the drain. In accordance with patient preference and environment safety, it would be appropriate to use local government pharmacies as collection points for proper disposal. OBJECTIVE: To determine the practice of pharmacists, working in government healthcare sectors, with regar

Epidemiology of intestinal nematodes in school-age children of the Kumba Urban Area, south west Cameroon.

BACKGROUND: The urban slums, poorly disposed garbage and inadequate toilet facilities in many homes, coupled with the high temperatures, rainfall and humidity that characterise the Kumba urban area, favour the development and transmission of helminth parasites in the area. School-age children are particularly at risk of infection. OBJECTIVE: To determine the pattern of soil-transmitted nematode infections in the Kumba urban area as affected by seasonal changes. DESIGN: Longitudinal study. SETTING: Ten primary schools in the Kumba urban area. SUBJECTS: Five hundred and eighty seven randomly

Birds, migration and emerging zoonoses: west nile virus, lyme disease, influenza A and enteropathogens.

Wild birds are important to public health because they carry emerging zoonotic pathogens, either as a reservoir host or by dispersing infected arthropod vectors. In addition, bird migration provides a mechanism for the establishment of new endemic foci of disease at great distances from where an infection was acquired. Birds are central to the epidemiology of West Nile virus (WNV) because they are the main amplifying host of the virus in nature. The initial spread of WNV in the U.S. along the eastern seaboard coincided with a major bird migration corridor. The subsequent rapid movement of the

A participatory food environment study on healthy diets in Southern and Eastern Zambia.

The food environment plays an important role in shaping diets, yet evidence in Zambia is limited. Traditional fermented foods such as mabisi, a Zambian traditional fermented milk, are beneficial and recommended as part of a healthy diet in the Zambian food-based dietary guidelines. Using components of Photovoice, this study explored factors influencing the consumption of healthy diets in the urban and rural food environments of two Zambian districts, Choma and Chipata, which differ in mabisi consumption. Fifty-seven participants shared their perspectives, revealing that despite the differences

Diagnosis and epidemiology of Leishmania infantum in domestic cats in an endemic area of the Amazon region, Brazil.

Visceral leishmaniasis is a zoonotic disease caused by Leishmania infantum for which dogs are the main reservoir. In South America, presence of this disease is expanding along with increasing dispersion of its principal vector, the sand-fly Lutzomyia longipalpis. Feline leishmaniasis is an emerging disease in domestic cats, but epidemiological studies in endemic areas of the Amazon region of Brazil are scarce and the role of cats as reservoirs of L. infantum has been debated. The aim of this study was to investigate L. infantum infection in cats living in the Amazon biome region, using serolog

Phylogenetic analyses of antibiotic-producing Streptomyces sp. isolates obtained from the stingless-bee Tetragonisca angustula (Apidae: Meliponini).

Many insects have been associated with actinobacteria in protective symbiosis where antimicrobial metabolites inhibit host pathogens. However, the microbiota of neotropical insects such as the stingless-bee Tetragonisca angustula is poorly explored. T. angustula is a meliponid bee widely distributed in Latin America, its honey is traditionally exploited because of its ethno-pharmacological properties and its antimicrobial activity has been demonstrated. Also, the well-structured nest of this species allows exploration of the microbiota of its different components. Even though Streptomyces spp.

Tungiasis-related knowledge and treatment practices in two endemic communities in northeast Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Tungiasis, caused by the sand flea Tunga penetrans, is highly prevalent in many resource-poor communities in sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. Studies on knowledge and treatment practices related to tungiasis in affected populations are virtually nonexistent. To fill this gap, we performed a study in two resource-poor communities in northeast Brazil where this parasitic skin disease is highly prevalent. METHODOLOGY: Structured interviews were realized in a representative sample of household leaders in an urban slum in Fortaleza, capital of Ceará State (northeast

[Trachoma in the health district of Douentza, 10 years later the investigation in 1997].

In Mali one of the options of the fight against blindness is to implement the "CHANCE" strategy. The antibiotherapy is one of the strategy which has always a question who should be treated by which process (mass treatment focused treatment) and when we should treat for both mass treatment or targeted treatment, that is why this study has been initiated to evaluate the level of active trachoma (TI/TI) and the trichiasis in the district of Douentza and undertake the appropriate actions to fight for its reduction. It was a cross sectional survey done in may 2005 following a methodology based on t

Predictors for presence and abundance of small mammals in households of villages endemic for commensal rodent plague in Yunnan Province, China.

BACKGROUND: Ninety-one rodent plague epidemics have occurred in Lianghe county, Yunnan Province, China, between 1990 and 2006. This study aimed to identify predictors for the presence and abundance of small mammals in households of villages endemic for rodent plague in Lianghe county. RESULTS: Rattus flavipectus and Suncus murinus were the two species captured in 110 households. Keeping cats decreased the number of captures of R. flavipectus by one to two thirds and the chance of reported small mammal sightings in houses by 60 to 80%. Food availability was associated with fewer captures. Keep

Lean and Green Hand Office-Based Hand Surgery: Does it Work?

INTRODUCTION: United States healthcare spending continues to increase every year with projected spending of $5.3 trillion for 2025. This spending represents 19.6% of the GDP. The United States also leads the world in waste production with the healthcare industry being the second largest producer of waste nationally. Implementing new strategies and techniques in the operating room can help reduce the cost and waste produced. Adopting a more Lean and Green approach to hand surgery can help to reduce waste and costs without compromising patient safety and satisfaction. METHODS: A retrospective c

Probing wintertime air pollution sources in the Indo-Gangetic Plain through 52 hydrocarbons measured rarely at Delhi & Mohali.

During wintertime, the Indo-Gangetic Plain suffers from severe air pollution affecting several hundred million people. Here we present unprecedented measurements and source analyses of 52 NMHCs (25 alkanes, 16 aromatics, 10 alkenes and one alkyne) in the cities of Delhi and Mohali (300 km north of Delhi) during wintertime (Dec 2016-Jan 2017). NMHCs were measured using a thermal desorption gas chromatograph equipped with flame ionisation detectors with data traceable to WMO standards. The ten most abundant NMHCs that were measured were the same at both Delhi and Mohali: propane, n-butane, acety

Quantification of antimicrobial consumption in adult cattle on dairy herds in Flanders, Belgium, and associations with udder health, milk quality, and production performance.

The main objective of this study was to quantify the (compound-specific) antimicrobial consumption (AMC) in adult cattle in a convenience sample of Flemish dairy herds. Antimicrobial consumption data were obtained between 2012 and 2013 by "garbage can audits" and expressed as antimicrobial treatment incidence (ATI), with the unit of the ATI being the number of defined daily doses animal (DDDA) used per 1,000 cow-days. Herds were stratified by DDDA into low-, medium-, and high-consuming herds to study the AMC per route of administration, and associations with parameters reflecting udder health,
